Friedrich Schiller on history: "The Nature and Value of Universal History"
In Schiller's opinion, the facts of history had to be connected through philosophical reasoning. This would eventually lead to the discovery of the plan of nature.
Schiller's lecture can be found in English translation in: History and Theory, Vol 11, no. 3, pp. 321-334, 1972.

Collingwood on history: "The Idea of History"
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Collingwood claimed that the historian must "re-enact" history, and that such a re-enactment is the only explanation needed for historical events. Sounds simple, but is it? Today's video is about: Collingwood, R. G. (1946) The Idea of History. New York: Oxford University Press. Recommended reading: Walsh, W. H. (1967) Philosophy of History. New York: Harper & Row. Foucault on history: "The Order of Things"
มุมมอง 11K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Foucault claimed that there were limits to what people could actually think, depending on what period of history they lived in. Agree? The book I am discussing in this video is: Foucault, Michel (2002) The Order of Things. Routledge, London/New York. Original title: Les mots et les choses. First published, 1966. Tolstoy on history: "War and Peace"
มุมมอง 2.9K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The famous Russian author Leo Tolstoy was an insightful philosopher of history. In the second epilogue of his great novel about the Napoleonic wars, he criticizes contemporary historiography and clarifies his own theory of historical explanation. War and Peace can be bought at practically any bookshop 😊. Just don't by an abridged version, which will probably be without the epilogue. Recommended...
Petrarch on history- "On Illustrious Men"
มุมมอง 7814 ปีที่แล้ว
Petrarch is often claimed to be the first humanist of the renaissance. Although most famous for his poetry, he also wrote a historical work, On Illustrious Men. In the preface, he appeals to Roman antiquity for ideals and inspiration, to bring an end to "The Dark Ages". My name is Jostein Garcia de Presno, I live in Norway, and work at Volda University College, where I am doing a PhD in history...
Orosius on history: "Seven Books of History against the Pagans"

Orosius lived at the end of antiquity/beginning of the middle ages. His "Seven Books of History against the Pagans" became extremely influential for the Christian medieval understanding of the Roman empire as God's tool for salvation. Sir , how Collingwood links with past with present ? Can be explain it as According to Collingwood , every historian looks upon past through his own present view and every historian has its own interpretation regarding a particular event Is it true ?

    • @Sunny.ankit0
      @Sunny.ankit0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well Harsh, by reenacting the sources, the primary ones are the one that links the past with the present. and for the second, i think it is more precisely according to E.H. Carr.

I like this quote from the video: ““these thoughts are simply beyond the limits of the episteme of the age.” I can imagine a community or review board hearing your story of how you discovered something completely amazing and they respond in that same vein. They understand it’s an innovative idea and has potential for positive change but perhaps because their participation in the existing episteme includes high status and power they might try and dismiss or even silence the new idea lest they lose everything they have worked for and have to walk in the shoes of the man who came to them.

Fellow historian here with my MA in European history. Your command of historiography and methodology is very clear, succinct and to the point. I like that you are breaching the field to the public. Historiography and how we "do" history typically gets lost on the public. A few questions I have if I may and one request. What is the area of focus for your MA and PhD? Any particular research your working on or enjoy? And finally when researching how do you approach interpretation i.e lenses used? My request for a topic is either E.P Thompson or Ranke. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.

As you have said the movements of nations are not caused by power or intellectual activity but by the collective activity of all the people. Tolstoy states: “ The movement of nations is caused not by power, nor intellectual activity, nor even by a combination of the two as historians have stated, but by the activity of all the people who participate in the events, and who always combined in such a way that those taking the largest direct share in the event take on themselves the least responsibility and vice versa.” What does he mean by the largest direct share ? Would thousands of soldiers fighting on a battlefield be an example of such a large share of an event so that they take the least responsibility ? Would love to hear your explanation. Already subscribed and loved your video!!
