Netflix or even Disney Plus should make a live action of Oban Star Racers just cut down on the misogyny. We're better about that now. Make it more that she's an unexperienced pilot going against people that trained for years. Make it that Don Wei doesn't want to put her through that because, in his eyes, she's a kid.

I imagined a crossover with Obon and Green Lantern The Animated Series.

I remember and miss this series I realywonder what a sequal could look like. I have to admit though I am scared since some sequals and reboots tend to lack in capturing every aspect that made the origanal awsome. I'd be verry curios as to what the plot would be now though.

What i love internet for is ability to find someone who shares my very specific experience, despite being of a different origin entirely. For me, Oban left such a powerful... i dunno how to call it, mark, i guess? In a way, its a part of my very soul, and i know it sounds corny as hell, but its true - for some reason, this cartoon just stuck with me, even though i was only been able to rewatch after almost 15 years... to this day, i think Oban influences my own artistic endeavors even if i myself dont notice it. And thats not saying anything on the actual quality of the show - which is, imo, amazing. Honestly, the only other piece of media what left such impact on me was the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, with Nausicaa herself being the second thought what comes to my head then i hear the word 'mother', coming only after, well, my own mom. And if your piece of art managed to leave as deep of an impact as work of Miyazaki of all people, you are doing something damn right

I just got the 15th anniversary bluray collector's edition. It came with art book, art cards, a poster and more. It happened through a kickstarter. Hopefully this leads to season 2 or some kind of continuation. The blurays are selling out. So it appears to be a success. So i hope so.

What a great era for science fiction. It's sad to see this genre of animation phased out of style. I suspect it ended with the cancellation of Sym-bionic Titan. High fantasy (D&D style) is back to being the prominent thing. Which is fine, but shows like Warriors Eternal just doesn't grab me the same. Japan is also on the same fantasy kick as us. They've kinda of stop producing shows like Last Exile & Ergo Proxy. If they make a science fiction title now, it's more about horror & gore.

I was an adult when I first saw Oban, but I still found it to be a wonderful show. Even now seeing a clip of Spirit in this video brought a lump to my throat. Thanks for the retrospective

I remember this would come on Jetix at 2-4 a.m., (it changed time slots depending on the day of the week), and I would religiously wake up to watch it. I had the biggest crush on Aikka, and I shipped him with Eva. I loved the US opening "Never Say Never" and even recorded it on my flip phone to make it my ringtone. I found a playlist on YT and watch it every couple of months just for the nostalgia. My favorite episodes are 11, when she races Spirit, and episode 16, when she pulls the move she saw her mom do, and it finally starts to connect the dots for Don. I wish they would have done another season or something.

7:12 one thing about Don Wei you missed in the Sunday was that in between reinventing himself he gets mainly depressed and basically turn into a drifter barely taking care of himself. Also he is the only member of the main caste who knows the stake of the race. This, being forced to work outside his normal support structure, his memory of his wife’s death and the fact that Molly is the same age as his daughter all coming together result in the character we see on scene. Not a good outcome but a more understandable one.

Watched it arabic dubbed and the studio decided to not dub the ending and hooked millions of kids me included into loving the japanese language

This is a show I grew up watching and I agree it still holds up to this day. Opening wise I like both Chance to Shine and Never Say Never and I do wish the latter had gotten a full version. Character design wise they all stand out and are almost instantly recognizable and there isn't one I dislike. Overall a solid show and while it isn't perfect no show is.

I had this show in my head for years yet didn't know the name. Unit a school friend mentioned an racing anime he was watching. What lead me to a moment of bliss to find this show again after so long. I just had to binge it at that point.

I miss this fairy tale from an early age I felt sentiment for this fairy tale, and I still feel this sentiment

I live in Europe so had been fortunate enough to never hear the North American Opening theme for the show. I adore Yoko Kanno's opening and closing themes for this (the "Making of Oban Star Racers" documentary has a nice interview with her explaining the punchy opening and more melancholic closing are meant to represent the two sides to Molly's personality which I thought was a nice touch) and am a fan of her other work. The "Never Say Never by Steve Hampton and John Adair" opening for the US release isn't even that bad, it just feels tonally completely removed from the show. The show has such strong and obvious Japanese and French influence, so having a 2000s American butt-rock song blaring in its opening always seems so out of place.

There is a Blu-ray set of Season 1 of this now available. I got mine in the mail today. Also all 26 full episodes of Season 1 of this are available to watch on TH-cam for free.

I did the same thing but it was the OP and the starship seared in to my mind, with some vague character designs. I didn't even know Chance to Shine was Japanese, I just remember the English parody I made up in my head as a kid, so obviously I could never find it. One night I scrolled through every show Jetix ever aired looking for something that sounded vaguely familiar. Eventually I found it and I binge watched the whole thing, it's one of my favourite shows, and I backed the BluRay last year.

Thank god, if you werenot older then me i was gona think I got bad memory how you can remember this much of that show. I can only regonise that character and the idea that they race. I was confused if molly was boy or a girl in memory till I watch this video. There were a lot good of cartoon back then with female as main and other times boys as main. But these days all kids cartoons are divided into only boys and only girl show the common thing being they have no story or good 😒 characters.

i love how the experience of watching oban on tv as a primary school kid and questioning its existence as a possible fever dream ever since is this common, seems to happen to everyone including myself lmao

Eva doesn't accept her Dad's apology. Nor do I think Don asks more than once for forgiveness. His actions have context and understanding but that doesn't make them right or altogether bad. He probably would have been a terrible father to her, but abandoning her wasn't a brilliant choice either.

Yeah this anime is the reason why i have a huge love and compassion for Cars planes and Racing all together i am just glad i was one of the lucky ones to see it one tv back in 06 this show really is just a great masterpiece and yeah i am just greatly happy to see this show gettin worked on again and is gettin the very well deserved attention for me this show is way better than Dragon ball naruto and pokemon its just that good imo And molly yeah she was and still is my number 1 fav female main character i rarely have fav fav female characters but characters that has a deep and emotional story behind them yeah i take a great liking to themas they are showing to be more mature and arent afraid of anything

OMG!! I LOVED THIS SHOW AS A KID AND STILL DO! The animation was great and the music was beautiful! I loved exploring Eva and her trauma and the estranged relationship with her father! I remember always rooting for Don to figure it out or for her to tell him! And I appreciated it as I got older! It was amazing! I wish it got more recognition!

Great video. I vividly remember Oban Star Racers, but not the title, as a kid mainly because of commercials of it on Jetix as well as a promotion of it with McDonald's Happy Meal toys. I recently watched some episodes of the anime, and I got to say that it's quite interesting in terms of the world building and story. Also, I supported the blu ray Kickstarter after seeing it. I want this show to get a chance and grow an audience like how Avatar the Last Airbender grew a fanbase in 2020. Overall, this video is great!

I lost my job after 2 days. To be fair, it was only a temporary job and I was only supposed to be there for a few weeks. Apparently they "thought I was not a good fit"? They didn't even have the decency to tell me to my face or to give me any warning; I received a phone call after work was over for the day, saying I was "not a good fit" and that I wouldn't be working there anymore. I did my best work and put forth my best effort; I think I asked too many questions, I think that's what I did wrong. And I was a bit slow I think. But I was still learning how to do things and was not used to it yet. 2 days. Are you kidding me?
