Taking Risks in Life - Real Women Real Success
The worst was having my boss compete with me. My first red flag among many should have been when she told me she is a very jealous person when I first started the job. I got tired of her taking my ideas and holding me back so I left. She got promoted. I loved the job…good pay flexibility, etc. but I left after the higher up boss left because there was no longer a buffer between me and my direct supervisor.
I see a therapist because of this. Also complicated PTSD from a previous life in uniform. Military blues to corporate blues isn’t an easy transition. It’s terrible actually.
People compete for alphas attevtion favor. Doesnt have to be male..ive seen the man get ignored by the whole straight group. I hate leaving home
Competition is healthy ...a group will pick one scape goat to enjoy shutting out now that is evil.
If u think about it its survival in the wild it would be not good for another woman to take your man..nature is brutal.😢i watched an eagle fly off with a mouse ...evolutionary psychology she just said it..😂
Thanks 😊🇺🇸💪👍
You are very welcome.
Wow this is good
Great advice about not confronting them or making remarks, it only makes you look bad. My strategy is to inundate the micro-mgr with a play-by-play of my work and time. Even bathroom breaks. They eventually leave me along and focus on something/someone else.
It’s usually a nit picky insecure unfocused woman manager just work for a man. None of these methods work. These people lead out of fear. Nitpicking isn’t because of being new and you waste all your time trying to appease them.
It all sounds good but women who undermine another females’ success, upward mobility comes from place of insecurity, low confidence. I believe the core issue to address is find ways for these insecure women to build up their self confidence .
I love this. As a recovering codependent, I need to let go of this idea I can make them change but to minimize and cope until I can get a new job is probably better lol.
Very mature response. Love your self awareness and willingness to take some responsibility to make things better while looking for a better solution for you. Good luck to you, Ginger!
Step 1: walk.
Definitely one option. It doesn't hurt to try to build some skills in dealing with difficult people while you're looking for something better. Thanks for the comment. Lacy
If someone is really set in their ways this can be a cause for micromanagement in partners especially after moving in together and adapting to different way each does things. My partner watches me do simple tasks like boil an egg. I grab a pot fill it with water turn on the stove, he can't help but jump in and turn on the stove fan and pop a lid on my pot like i would have forgotten to do these things on my own. Its annoying and belittling. To the people that jumps in during others' train of thought before they can even get there to complete the task "correctly". Stop doing this.
They just want all white colored employees at Lowe’s Lehi! If you’re black or brown skin colored employees then start looking for another job! Bad or good white Americans are the only acceptable in Lowes Lehi! Too much racist right? White American kids, adults and senior citizens are the only employees allowed to work at Lowe’s Lehi! You can just smell the environment! 😂😂😂😂😂
Sounds like you’re encouraging the micromanager’s staff to enable this toxic and unhealthy behaviour.
Thank you for posting
a micromanager should be sent back to univ to learn a course again. A micromanager always focus on tiny things, forget about the big view.
#womenveteran #femaleveteran #shesaDr I'm late to the party but this is a great video. 👍
Well said sister
I have been with my manager for 5 years and she was always happy with my work ethic and said things like "just keep doing what you are doing" as i was top sales person. However, recently she employed new staff and now find myself micromanaged with new staff. While i understand i am part of the team i feel somewhat disrepected and not trusted. How do i approach this...i dont want to be ostracised by my team but i feel pressured, overworked and micromanaged...boss is pushing them to see what they are made of...
My job has policies for workflow that are micromanaging so my manager must micromanage by default, but he's a micromanager himself naturally, so it's like a double whammy lol
Many workplaces are noting that it is difficult to hire competent workers since the COVID epidemic. Many of those in management bubbled up from lower positions due to worker shortages. They are less experienced and tend to either micromanage or rely on coworkers to manage others. It is creating a hostile environment in many workplaces. Upper management needs to take a good look at the competence of their new managers and create better training programs.
talent has nothing to do with being competent,it takes tremendous effort to be competent at anything, and it is the easiest way to fool the other person saying he or she was/is talented and couldnt do anything, nobody does anythig solely with talent, thats idiocy in itself
Don't think lowering yourself is part of a toxic group of any find is good for you.
I’m sorry but this was a guide on how to be a doormat. The micromanager was centered completely… so after the micromanager has dumped all their anxiety onto the person then this person takes all of that home to their family. It’s incredible to me how we tell ppl to be honest but on the workplace you’re to live in constant fear and lie to survive it.
My manager does not micro manage because of a sorry childhood or an abusive husband or anything negative. She does it because as she always says "I grew up a spoiled brat and got everything I wanted". She got everything from her parents and gets everything from her husband. She is used to having things her way.
Thanks for your comment. That is an unfortunate situation. What she is really telling you is that because she has always had everything she wanted, she is not going to learn how to lead. It's a silly explanation on her part at best. Now that you know she has no intention of learning to be a good leader, you might consider looking for employment elsewhere. It's a candidate's job market right now. Take advantage of that. Good luck to you. Lacy
@@lacyschoen2794 Thanks for your response. I informed her yesterday that I will be leaving, she asked why was I quitting my job I simply replied "Good employees do not quit their jobs...they quit their managers" We have bumped heads many times. I am the coordinator - next in line right under her. We have 62 employees (68 before she started) and they ALL complain that she shows no gratitude, she either overworks them by giving clerks the job of 3 clerks or if you get on her bad side she only schedules you as a fulltime employee 3 days a week. I tell her these things but she just shrugged her shoulders and said sarcastically "So!...I'm not fixing to treat anyone like my kids". I pity her because she does not see how since she took over as manager we have lost 6 people because of her. She admits that she can't remember names so she will call everyone "Sunshine" but we have clerks that do not want to be called anything else other than their name. A clerk even made that clear to her by saying "My name is Katrina not Sunshine!" she actually rolled her eyes at the clerk. Needless to say Katrina WAS a very good worker.
Women rivalry is awful.. It's the reason why men tule the world. Women can be ruthless and very mean.
I don't have any sympathy for micro managers becuase they choose to act this way and if they cannot lead a team in a healthy competent way they shouldn't be in a leadership role, period. If they are not fit to lead they should not be doing the job.
One reason girls feel the need be constantly watching and competing with someone is because some are still dealing with unhealed mother wounds. Do the work, fix the problem. We are women & we are beautiful.
You’ve charmed me…
This is unrealistic. The good old boys club were I worked had to do with drugs and sleeping with women in the work place. It was my dream job in the film industry, and I was the only woman there who didnt sleep my way to the top. Very uncomfortable. Sometimes its not all about smoking a cigar with your male colleagues. Sometimes the boys club has an admission fee: Sex.
Also, micro-management doesn't always come from a place of the need to control, sometimes it's a micro - aggression because of a disdain for a certain person. You have to use wisdom to determine if this is fixable. If not, move on to another workplace that's a better fit for you. It never ceases to amaze me that people in Corporate spaces never consider 'pure evil' as a reason why people do some things. Some people are simply mean spirited with no conscience. I've worked with these kinds of people and HR and others around them make these business excuses for them. In my opinion, micro-managment should not be tolerated no matter the reason. It's toxic.
Sometimes an employee is not as skilled or as good at their job as they think and when someone observes them that person is able to pick up on mistakes. In the care sector most carers are inadequately trained for the health condition of the client and due to shortages in this sector these types of inexperienced carers have to be hired and then unfortunately end up being micromanaged for a while until an employee is upto par and got more knowledge for the job. But the carer usually is resistant to hearing any mistakes being pointed out since they themselves do not consider their lack of knowledge as an issue. Critiquing these employees is hard work due to a reluctance to hear criticism. A carer who had to wipe eyes of a disabled person had shown up with 1 inch nails. And when explained that this could scratch the eye the carer said how they hate the Manager. A great video would be how to handle constructive criticism as an employee. Rarely people get observed in their work and so they dont like hearing feedback which is negative. Teachers are more accustomed to being observed during training and on the job so they do not get offended to their work being critiqued. Micro managing is the equivalent of being observed and getting constructive feedback like a driving instructor does when teaching how to drive. But employees usually do not like this at work since even if they haven't been properly observed they assume they know best. Teachers get observed every day in the teacher training phase. And are I guess what u refer to as micromanaged but really getting trained. Learning to be open to constructive criticism is really the video that people should be watching. But yes there may be occasions when a micromanager is inappropriate. If their skillset is lower. A carer once chopped an onion and put into the fridge without a lid on it. Stunk the whole fridge out. When told to put a lid on the container in future they took offense. Since they did not like to be micromanaged. And then started pointing out mistakes of their manager. Tit for tat. Really? Sometimes constructive feedback has to be given and learned how to take.
I've always said that I prefer and have got on better in my career having male bosses. With women bosses I always find are competitive, critical and rarely supportive and tend to set unrealistic deadlines.
So they have an excuse? Who cares?
It's not an excuse...it's just a reason. Understanding people is part of leadership. It's never out of style to understand others.
Love this discussion. So many gems, like preparedness is key and making the changes necessary to evolve and advance. Thanks for sharing!
You bet. So glad you found value in the discussion. Lacy
I confronted an Abrasive female, "Denise B" ( not her name) and said, Talk respectful to me, she was DEFENSIVE AND STUNNED. it went Further South( bye!)
Hi Carol. You might try some of the strategies I outline in this video. You might get a different response. Good luck to you! Lacy
I had a micromanager, I didnt had the chance to remove my coat and put my work shoes on, and she was already at my place waiting for me to do this and that, It was constant pressure. One day, I was fed up, I told her that I already have a Mom and didnt need a second one. It landed me at HR 🤡
Hi Patricio. I'm sorry you are experiencing this. You might try some of the tactics I share in my video. Trying another approach might get a better response. Good luck to you. Lacy
I do not say these things, because I am trying to be a "Debbie Downer", but when I say it multiple times, and am ignored, because I am not the type of person to go off on people, I understand that I am being maligned.
I said these things years ago, and I am completely undervalued.
So funny. My name is Debbie. I don't like people to steal my ideas and take credit for it. They can care less.
Hi Debbie. Thanks for the comment. Who could care less? The people stealing your ideas? Would love to respond but want to understand you correctly. Lacy
You can tell volumes about a person by the energy that they radiate along with evil eyes...
Gross. Sorry. Gross. Sorry. Gross. Gross. Gross. No, just no, not sorry. Yes, all the things required to "join" require you to do the things you mentioned not "having" to do. Just...gross. No, thanks. "Good old boys club" is a cutesy phrase for "oppressive patriarchy". If you can't beat 'em, join 'em? Yeah, no thanks. I particularly avoid women who have subscribed to this b.s. (or, try to convert them, obvi).
Club Music. Your comment makes the assumption that all "good ole boys" are doing their oppressive behaviors on purpose. Look up "Unconscious bias." That is a good portion of people in this category. They are unaware of their bias and how it oppresses. The way you change their thinking is to walk a mile in their shoes, speak their language, and give them "eye opening moments" to see you differently, or realize their bias. Leaders meet other people where they are...not where they want them to be. It's the only way to build a bridge from one end to the other. On the other hand, supporting one another the way good ole boys do is something that all women can learn from these men. Women need to quit cutting each other down, stick together and support each other. Of course, not all women undercut other women, just like all men are not intentionally oppressive. But we can definitely learn from the loyalty the good ole boys show each other. Women would benefit from showing that kind of loyalty to each other as women. All ships rise. Good luck to you. Lacy
My manager is amazing. He never tells me what to do, as he trusts me to do my job. My issue is with an equal level coworker who loves to micromanage. I just got a note today telling me to clean the bathroom during my shift. Why didn't she clean it during hers?
Can you just ignore your coworker? If she’s not your boss, why worry about it?
what if the good ol boys club runs your town and sexually assaulted you and robbed your home, then spread rumors about you so you cannot get hired anywhere? i live in an empirical good ol boy run town. the good ol boys running things now are the same misogynistic entitled rich kids that i stood up to in high school when i was bullied. now we are all grown and the bullying has continued but now effects my livelyhood. I want to take down the business model, not join it for more of the same public suffocation of truth.
Hi Grace. I hear what you are saying. If these people are doing everything you say, I would make the case that they are way beyond the definition of the good ole boys club; they are dysfunctional, criminal, and intentionally destructive. There are plenty of places where you can thrive. This is more than just getting past a subconscious behavior. At the end of the day, if the group in power has nothing in common with your values, and they certainly don't in this case, it is way beyond anything I talk about in this video and you should seek a place to live and work that aligns with your values and treats people with respect and dignity. I would also suggest getting some support to deal with these terrible past occurrences in your life at the hands of these people because for you to truly thrive, you will have to find a way to move beyond it to have success in any new place and life endeavor that you chose. I'm truly sorry that you have experienced these atrocities. I wish you all the best and always feel free to let me know how I can support you. lacy@lacyschoen.com All my best. Lacy

My process is pilot process, i bring the process and in next 4 yrs my process grown so much my team member increase and now suddenly management appointed new manager because the process grown big and this person dont understood the process and want to micro manage everything its so frustrating. I dont know what to do , i work so hard on this process i dont want to leave this process.
Sk, have you tried any of the strategies I outline in my video? Lacy
@@RealWomenRealSuccessLacySchoen Hi Lacy, I think my manger want to show his importance . So i will take the back seat and no fight with them . Lets hope the situation will better. Thanks for your advise 🙏🙂 .
I have ONE now it's awful they are relentless .
Robert, thanks for the comment. Have you tried any of these tactics? Feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to discuss further. lacy@lacyschoen.com
these are all great tips, but it feels easier said than done, especially when you're already walking on eggshells with them, and the chances of miscommunication is sky high, and they're nursing an ego. these tips would probably work with someone who's open to feedback (and isn't just claiming to be) and is objective, but they're tough to apply to those on the passive aggressive spectrum. at what point do you stop bending over backwards for them? it simply goes against self-preservation to continue to make it about them when you're emotionally drained yourself because of their behaviour. i really didn't sign up to be someone's nanny.
Hi extrasoap. Your comments are spot on. These tactics are something to try. If they don't work, it may be time to move on. I have experienced what you are talking about. The way I handled it was to make sure that leaders above and around my boss knew of my talents and contributions. I did this because I wanted to stay with the organization because it served a bigger cause that I was passionate about. Eventually, I was offered a better job and took it. You cannot change people. You can only change your approach to them and observe the results. I do think it's worth a try to gingerly approach the issue as I've suggested in this video, but if your initial efforts produce a negative rather than a positive reaction, then yes, it may be time to look elsewhere for employment. The good news is, everyone is looking for great people right now. You have options. Feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss further. lacy@lacyschoen.com Good luck to you! Lacy
@@RealWomenRealSuccessLacySchoen thank you for your response and insight, and for sharing your own experience. i think what you said about making others above and around your boss aware of your talents makes sense, but i'm relatively new at the job and in a role i decided to explore and therefore have no background/education/training in, so unfortunately i have no crazy skills to show off and it's also a rather bureaucratic organisation where i have little interaction with leaders above said boss. you're absolutely right about not being able to change someone, so yes, i am indeed keeping an eye out for something else, hoping to start with a clean slate. it just sucks that one single person can mess up your resume like that.
@@extrasoap4881 Yes. It is unfortunate, but I still think there are some things you can do. Feel free to email me if you want to chat more. lacy@lacyschoen.com Or, if you are set on just moving on, I completely understand why you would do that. Good luck to you either way! Lacy

Hi Rose. I’m guessing from your comment that you didn’t watch the video. Toward the end I make it clear that the strategies I teach will help you with any circle of power in which you find yourself outside that circle. It’s not about joining them in their recreational activities. It’s about becoming part of the power circle yourself. Once you are part of the power circle, you are able to leverage it to move toward your goals. If you are interested in that, then I can help you. Good luck to you. Lacy
What do you do when it’s your equal co worker (who most likely but hopefully not will become manager)? I hate that it forcing me to face conflict when I’d rather just not have to.
Hi Joan. I think I just responded to another comment of yours and then saw this one. Are you saying that this person is in line to become your manager? What is their relationship with your boss? What is your relationship like with your boss? If you'd like to discuss this privately, feel free to email me at lacy@lacyschoen.com
My favorite thing is when it’s not even a got dang manager doing it
How would someone that has no authority over another micromanage them? I understand if they try to, but the fix is a lot simpler when they are not your boss. Is this the case? Lacy
