I think it needs to be added that you can also use smaller airfields, for example if you lack suitable roads. Such airfields tends to be numerous, especially where large roads and larger airfield is lacking. I would be interested in the video that explains what it is about how Gripen is built, that makes it better than conventional planes for STOL operations. Tackar ♥

What about a comparison with the F-16 Fighting Falcon given to Ukraine? From various sources, it's mentioned that the F-16 requires robust runways, whatever that means. Does it suggest that its landing gear does not tolerate a rough surface, but indeed requires a standard airfield?

Many similar aircrafts could do the same. The more important question is why did Finland decide to become a NATO member without any referendum and than decide to give up some part of it´s land to Amerinans(to build mil. bases) ? The only stupid outcome is this: Finland is now targeted by Russia´s huge nuclear forces and in case of real war between USA and Russia Finland would never be defended by USA but desroyed copletely within minutes, there would be no survivors in Helsinky and many other cities. I live in Czechia and since the very beginning of this war I say this: What is the point of helping to a country(Ukraine) which started with killing long time before Russia step in to stop killing civilians in Donbas? What is the point of western help to killers ????? Only similar killers(European politicians) could decide to help those killers who started murdering back in 2014 in Donbas, long before Russia decided that enough was enough. Germany is only listenning to orders from USA and USA is the country which destroyed Germany´s pipelines!!! Is E.U. insane? European politicians are serving to Ameriaca insted of serving their own country!!!!!!!!! Finaly I say this: Russia is huge superpower and will always be !!!

Hi Max, thanks for looking into this and speaking English (I am a New Zealander). I was wondering if you could expand further on this topic by including the Erieye and the DCIS network. Given recent events and increasing tensions, in my own country the topic of the Gripen and Erieye seems to pop up along with comments about the ability to operate in austere locations, such as the South Pacific. F16 veterans from the Gulf War talked about the problem with FoF signal and how they during the Gulf War had to simply plot allied flights around the Patriot batteries so as not to get shot down by friendly fire.

Like one F-35 pilotin said, "ask any fighter pilot which is the most important thing, and he/she will answer" situational awareness"". Gripen E is the best 4th gen fighter, all things considered. F-35 Block 4 is the best fighter. Together they work like art.
