Greenland Rolling Practice Spring 2024

I always tell my students that rolling is a "use it or lose it" skill. That was VERY evident on my first day out in my Greenland Kayak this year as I tried a bunch of rolls that I hadn't done since last summer. No wet exits but my technique and form are out of shape and need work. Practice practice practice! :-) For those interested in the full list of 35 Greenland Championship maneuvers visit ...

Another great Rolling Clinic at Jericho with James Manke. We were teaching Kayak Outfitting ("wear your kayak like a boot"), the Load/Drive Concept (wind up and release) and Rotation/Flotation (using torso Rotation to Float to the back deck). Our students practiced Balance Braces, Butterfly Rolls and Hand Rolls. It's always incredibly rewarding to see students getting their first rolls!

      Yeah it was a fun trip. I'm not familiar with the UK program but Paddle Canada describe it as follows: "Building on the skills developed in Level-1, Level-2 provides paddlers with the intermediate skills they need to go sea kayaking in class-2 conditions along semi-exposed shoreline with a possible overnight bivvy." The Level corresponds with Paddle Canada's Sea State Classifications: paddlecanada.com/levels/sea-kayak/sea-kayak-level-2-skills/ Cheers

    Hello folks! Nice session there. Love the use of traditional tech, I'm a hige fan! I'm also an amateur qajaq builder without space to build or store kayaks. After a dozen build with different technique, I am now hoping to build using a hybrid technique of CNC router cut laminated frame integrated to the hull, or a empty SOF like composite kayak. I also have a 18' by 18" SOF frame ready to be skinned. It's a qajaq that's been skinned previously. Since a few ribs were sticiking out, skin has been removed and frame reworked. First time is was skinned, this finished qajaq was tipping the scale at 19 lbs. Get in touch if you have space and want to embark on a Greenland inspired gear adventure!

    I noticed that the one guy had a bit of air trapped in his dry suit when he was rolling. My question is, do you think that extra trapped air is helpful when rolling or doing a scramble? One would think the extra flotation would be helpful, however, I imagine that extra air trapped in the sleeves would make it harder to roll because now your arms and paddle are fighting the extra buoyancy. What is your opinion. Would it be better to completely burp the dry suit, or it doesn't really matter and the difference is insignificant?

    • @mmcholm
      @mmcholm ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a lot of air in your dry suit then you might stall out on a roll (stop face down on the side of capsize versus coming up on the other side). That said, if you are practicing a balance brace then air in the suit helps. Best to burp the suit otherwise.

  • @robertbrowne7880
    @robertbrowne7880 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most of the rolling videos I'm watching are with hard chines. Do you get a faster roll past the balance point?

    • @mmcholm
      @mmcholm ปีที่แล้ว

      A hard chine acts as a secondary keel when on edge, or in the context of rolling, when you are in a balance brace or floating to the back deck during a roll. The chine helps the boat stabilize on it's side which can assist rolling.

    Nice video and skills! I wish I lived closer to Bellingham and could demo all the boats and work with the factory on a custom fit. Just wondering if you do much tripping in the Reflection? I’m torn between the Grand Illusion and the Reflection… no doubt about the Reflection’s pedigree when it comes to surf and play, but I’d worry that I’d be giving up too much when it comes to trip friendly traits like tracking, speed, and storage. And with the Grand Illusion I’d be giving up too much when it came to surf… wish I could try them both out on an overnight! Also, what has been your experience with the hatches? Any “above average” leakage, or have they been dry? Cheers

    • @mmcholm
      @mmcholm ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used my Reflection for week long trips. If you are very careful with how you pack and have kayak sized gear and equipment then everything fits (just). If you need more room the Grand Illusion surfs and maneuvers great. The rear oval hatches leak. Period. Despite what the wonderful team at Sterling may say about their hatch covers. I always end up with water in the stern. Round hatches are generally very good though. My next Sterling would be a Grand Illusion for easier packing on longer trips. I have a Progression as well which I use for instructing.

    • @MattEdwards-Davies-sr4gs
      @MattEdwards-Davies-sr4gs ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the reply, and for the thoughts! That’s a real bummer about the oval hatches, but at least the round ones work well. My current boat is a freight train (Delta 17) so it may be difficult to cut my camping kit down enough to fit into a Reflection…. Could be a good minimalist exercise though. Cheers!

    That looks like a BLAST! I'm hoping to do my L2 this year, so this gives me the inspiration to keep going! Q: it seemed like it was more challenging to brace while you were surfing with the GL paddle (you had to roll a couple of times) - or was that on purpose for practice? I have both a GL (GearLab Kalleq) and a Euro (Werner Cyprus) and go back and forth between them. I love both, but wonder which I should focus on when getting into more dynamic water.

    • @mmcholm
      @mmcholm ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Thanks for watching. I capsized coming off the wave because I ended up in a whirlpool lol. Once you're sucked in the bracing doesn't do a heck of a lot. I'd rather use my Greenland for rolling any day. That said I probably should have been using my white water Euro for surfing (Werner Stikine). I was a really tough wave to get on so a bit more power would have helped.

    I wish I started training with you instead of who I did. Still hoping to get it.

      It's never to late. I start with a layback sweep roll which doesn't require strength. Just a bit of flexibility and technique. I teach out of Jericho Beach Kayak if you want to book with them and I can also do private lessons as a Paddle Canada Certified Rolling Instructor.
