I have an idea for you, why not make a history documentary about HM Prison vans? Since we rarely see them how they used to look like in the past as prisoners are mostly transported in an actual police van / bus, except we see the one in BBC Porridge saying HM Prison Slade.
Suction units were emptied and cleaned at the hospital in preparation for perhaps the next call, so twenty years of service.... that never happened.
I worked for wadham stringer early 90s I was in th crash repair shop Nextdoor was the ambulance shop Remember seeing New V8 freight rover Chassis cab's lined up waiting for conversion There were manual V8 with air rear suspension Thought even back then id love one of those But juicy things but sounded lovely
A modern digital world Like this narrating
Royal mail hasn't taught anyone how to drive them Most are dented
In our part of the UK, nearly all the Vauxhall RM vans have been got rid of now, in favour of Peugeots. Mainly the Peugeot Expert, but quite a few of the Partners and some of the Boxers (to do the parcel deliveries). Some Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans still in good use, Fiat Doblos.. It's usually DAF trucks that are used to cart the mail between sorting offices. On a larger scale between the major cities in the UK Mercedes Benz and DAF trucks were constants in the Royal Mail fleet but just a few years ago they invested in 29 IVECO trucks which run on biofuel a bit like the McDonald's wagons running on their own oil that's used to cook their chips in.😜
Well the crak is red is on the way out, the latest ones are white with yellow livery, they look terrible, there 2 just been delivered to our sorting office
I've worked for Royal mail 43 years most of my time driving the artics... This film did not show one... So incomplete regarding vehicles from Royal mail
Visit Royal Mail Garston in Liverpool. There is a collection of over 150 model vehicles, ships and a plane on public display
Would that be on display at the customer service point? Looks like a regular DO to me, from street view
@andrejz2438 yes just walk in and look to the left
Great video, thank you for shining light on us Royal Mail fleet mechanics. A job that often gets overseen 👍🏻
Must be a headache trying to find the right van in a car park 😂
@@klassicgarage oh yes, you can imagine the amount of times we hear ‘it’s the red one in the yard’ 🤣🤣 I love the job though, started through their apprenticeship scheme when I was 16 and I’m now a fully qualified mechanic, including electric trained and a MOT tester. September 2025 marks my 10th year! Used to be a job for life but I still think it is 😎
Good to see two of my still photographs appearing in this video.
Hey Steve, did we credit? Let me know if not and I'll add it ☺️
@@klassicgarage Unlikely as they are from my Flickr stream, so please add a credit for "Kitmasterbloke", many thanks!
Invokes trust??? You been under a rock this last few months??? 🤣😂
I have always been a fan of Jaguar cars, so I would be interested in any of their models, particularly the Jaguar XF. Love the videos and please keep up the good work.😀
epic, could you do one of these with an LDV van?
Absolutely, LDV Ambulance or Panel Van?
@@klassicgarage either would be cool, preferably the van
A lot of ex royal mail vans are broken up and recycled by Charles Trent in Poole
We used to buy them out of Measham commercial auction
Another annoying A.I. narrator.
I worked on a Post Office site in Islington and Morris LD vans were the most common at that time
As a retired postman driver no mention of the Leyland Terrier /Leyland Boxer/ Leyland Roadtrain / Bedford TK or TM or the Ford Cago .
All sold off in 2015 by Vincent sorry "Vince" Cable and the Liberal Undemocrats for £1.34 Billion at a loss to the tax payer of several billion pounds. Come 2024, now being purchased in a £5 billion deal led by Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský who has kindly agreed to retain the name and protect Royal Mail pensions, how kind of him. Well done Vince, yet again another low grade, third class, politician who has done this country proud!
I once worked in a place they filled up the vans. Security is super tight. Large gates and search points. Actually better security than prisons
These days known as Royal Fail with their sidekicks Parcelfarce.
Shush 🤣
There are VERY "saucy" videos of UK cabs out there...
Also failed to mention that I've never seen a royal mail van without a single body panel without a dent or scratch on it. Same as amazon delivery vans. They all get driven by pent up teenagers i guess! Drive it like you stole it!
Just remember children that a cashless society means you have no more rights or freedoms!
The mail vans still have the royal cypher EIIR, when will they be updated with one for Charlie? I suggest it should be C3PO. Anyone agree?
Only going to be Royal Mail logo on vans that replace older vans.
King Charles did say he didn't mind the EiiR not being changed straight away.
My Dad is a lifelong member of the RAC, i'm with the AA
Spotlight on the CA - really, never saw one, what about the 50s, 60s & 70s, all we got was a quick drive by of a J and EA and no mention of the backbone of the fleet - the Morris 1000, not good enough!!!!!
Also worth a mention is that in some rural areas Royal Mail used to operate Mail buses, vans fitted with additional seating would be used to help those in areas with little to no busses get around
Called “ the post bus” ….seen one in my early years as a postie
Very cool
My Dad was a proud Postman for 33 years, he drove a Ford Escort followed by a Vauxhall Combo.
Wish I could buy the mail van my Dad drove.
The Royal Mail has been sold down the river ...........private firms have been allowed to take all their work , Post Offices closed down all over the country, another national institution we should be proud of . Can’t imagine France doing that to La Poste , or the Swiss selling off their system...........The Uk is on the slide ...........Where is our pride ?
The private firms do it better, quicker and cheaper. It’s called competition. Parcel force is the laughing stock of the logistics industry. They weren’t sold down the river, they were opened up to competition and found woefully lacking. La Poste and Deutsche Post are way more efficient and can compete with the private companies. The UK isn’t on the slide. It’s hit rock bottom.
All their vehicles are pink now, the Royal Mail don't have the money to keep them updated and as in most red vehicles they have faded with age. A good T Cutting would give them another couple of years of their iconic vibrant red, but they obviously can't afford that either.
Electric car are trash
I think you have a fact wrong? The pink paint which wasn't just monochrome in colour was 1st applied during WWII for the SAS and the LRDG? During the war Artist were recruited/enlisted and they suggested or painted desert vehicles in differing shades of pink and probably sand colours because to their artistic eyes the desert is made up of these hues of colour. The British had a special department called the Magic men who some were actual trained Magicians or Illusionist and I think were artist who job was to fool the enemy. They helped make up a complete fictional army to distract the Germans prior to D-Day.
A guy called Mascaline excuse the spelling but thats how its said
No sane person would buy an ex royal mail van
I’ve had several straight from auction. They have all been fantastic. Maybe tatty but mechanically they have been unbeatable for the money they cost. I paid £1850 for a 3 year old escort van with 33,000 miles… had it for 5 years and sold it for £2000 with 140,000 in it… then got a transit and did the same
@@nevillebloodybartos Well done , they are usually hammered , bumping on and off kerbs etc ,I suppose it depends which area it comes from .I bought vw caddy gas van 35 ,000 for £6000 11 years ago never touched it apart from timing belt ,its still only got 74,000 on it now
@ I always buy ex fleet stuff. Usually bit rough looking but great mechanically. The gas stuff is usually in better nick and commands more money. The Royal Mail stuff is beaten to hell and cheap as chips, but mechanically still in good condition. I’ve got an ex AA transporter van now, had it 8 years and it’s at 260,000. Royal Mail used to only keep small vans for 3 years and larger vans for about 6 years so they still had plenty of life in them. Now they keep them 10yrs+ but get a good one and it’s been better maintained than most private cabs half the age
@@nevillebloodybartos Not sure they keep them for ten years ! the thing with the gas vans is they spend nearly all day doing nothing, may two . three calls a day ,unlike a mail van! British gas keep them for three years , and they're really good vans , A/C . heated mirrors ,electric windows ant skid
Body work might be tatty but mechanically they are sound, we’ve got vehicles that have got 800k km on them, still start first time and run like clockwork
You forgot to mention how many of these used vans ended up in Malta, from the days of the Morris Minor LCV to as much as the latest Vauxhall Combo....
Bedford CA did not become 'synonymous' with the Royal Mail, which only acquired a few on a trial basis. Also, what was the 'specially-designed' vehicle that you attribute to wartime deliveries?
And apart from the model, none of the pictures accompanying that portion of the video were CAs. Most were Morris LDs which were not mentioned.
In Glasgow black cabs were manual, both FX4s/Fairways and Metrocabs. The city is built on 11 hills and there are some very steep streets, the steepest being Gardner Street in Partickm where Albion Motors used to test bus and truck chassis.
the yellow stripes should be added back
How much would that cost on a fleet of thousands
Definitely agree
When I worked in the public affairs team at The Post Office Corporation, now Royal Mail Limited, we produced a leaflet telling the public that we were proudly switching from moving the bulk of mail from road to railway. This was in the late 1990’s when we had invested something like £300 million in the rail infrastructure. When the first of the 20 million leaflets arrived from the printers, I noticed that somehow managers had not seen their proof reading error and, instead of saying how proud we were to be moving from road to rail, the opposite had been written. I was hastily instructed to tell the printers to pull the leaflets. One of my other roles was to arrange visits for Opinion Formers to our network of Postbuses. I was incredibly lucky and travelled on many of the most remote routes. The service offered a lifeline to rural customers. Now, like our rail network, it no longer exists. For several years, I organised the photoshoot for the Annual Report and Accounts. One year we needed a postman’s bicycle. Unable to locate one in central London, I was forced to buy a brand new from stock bike from Pashley the makers. For a few years afterwards, the bike was used daily to cycle between the various post office buildings and stores in central London. The basket on the front being very useful for holding a briefcase. A great video that brought back happy memories to a retired employee!
The LDV Convoy they had an rpm governor.
No mention of the most popular van the Morris Minor!!
We'll try and highlight the moggie in a future dedicated video
Calm down, no need for the childish exclamation marks.
@@northernblue1093 who rattled your cage?

Had an 02 reg TX2 bought in 2005 which covered 524,000 miles until it was scrapped in 2018 but in 2020 I decided to buy another TX2 this one is a 53 reg with much lower milage only 292,000
They're great!
@@klassicgarage They certainly are! I have only driven a fairway a handful of times I never really got on with the driving position of a fairway, Might just be me but I always felt really close to the windscreen and would find the top of the windscreen would be eye level for me however in the TX series this was rectified and I absolutely love driving them I can no longer get on with driving a car after driving a taxi lol
Excellent video, very interesting, i enjoyed it, keep up the good work
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 🤝
