Our Life Simplified
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 มิ.ย. 2014
Welcome to our Random Life! This channel is about living a simple peaceful life. We do things that bring us joy, like gardening, chickens, woodworking, room makeovers, reviews, grilling, and travel, among other interests, while tracking our successes & failures. We both have full-time day jobs that pay our bills. But our non-paid passions are mostly about our home, working towards minimizing, becoming more self-sufficient, and cost-efficient, while creating a Zen-like simplified life. We have family and friends, who often ask us, "How did you do that?" This is a way for them to visually see what, and how, we do what we do. And this is for our children and grandchildren so they can learn who we are, what we do, and how we do it as a live diary of Our Life, Simplified! We hope they may learn about us and from us, if not in person, then at least virtually. And this is for anyone else who may share similar interests. Welcome to Our Life, Simplified! Simple Living In A Modern World.

Great job

Me too!! ❤️
No sear at all. Burgers are steamed, not grilled.
Trying this tomorrow with jalapeños and banana peppers. Thanks for the information.
You'll have to let me know what you think of it... I absolutely love it! I'm glad I tried it myself! I actually thought it was better than jalapenos only cowboy candy... not 'as spicy' ... but it still has some spice!
How’d it turn out? I have a bunch of banana peppers. Looking for ideas.
I just uploaded an update (a short) sharing my opinion.. my 1st time opening this cowboy candy w banana peppers just now! All I can say is..... WOW!
@@ourlifesimplified Awesome, thank you. Might have to give it a try.
@@Gingervitis1988 I don't think you'll be disappointed! I know I'm not! I think I like it better than the jalapeños cowboy candy style!
If I add a lot more epsom salt will it speed up the process
I would think so... I have repurposed these pots with faux plants and some of them I actually added soil and added live plants I germinated... placed them outside in a more shaded spot and that seemed to speed up the process maybe due to watering and allowing to dry out, and repeating, then the salt is left behind and more pronounced? The first time i saw this happen, it was by chance. I initially had soil and live plants in them that I would water with epsom salt water from time to time and it appeared... I hope that helped.
Thats wild
Wow😮
My first time love your videos
Thank you... I appreciate you! I do a lot of random videos... last year was mostly about chickens, gardens, and cooking. This year it's more projects around the house... along with reviews, some gardening & chicken stuff, cooking, & other... Now that I've recently become an empty nester, I'm more random than ever to try to stay busy. :)
Go get em Todd.
Happy fathers day
Poly doesn't stand up to the elements very well at all.
Oh. The water seems to be beading up on it... what do you recommend?
I just looked back through the video.. I used Spar Urethane... not poly...
@@ourlifesimplified I have limited experience. I've heard exterior outdoor deck paint or plain exterior house paint is probably the best the best performing but may be the aesthetically least appealing. I've heard people say use an appropriate stain and oil oil oil and oil. I will try oil on a plank shelf this year. Last year I saw the finish on my poly coated benches deteriorated to bare wood in 1 year. This year I'm trying deck paint I got for $4 a gallon on tables and planks for planter shelves
@@maxpolaris99 hey... thank you for your response. There is a difference between 'poly' vs 'spar' urethanes ... Todd usually advises me on which might work best depending on the project I'm working on. Todd used to refurbish wood boats when he was in college (the expensive ones) and Spar Urethane is what was used due to its waterproof properties. Now I do think there might be a difference, as in a 'marine grade' vs a regular? But I will keep you posted on how well the Spar Urethane holds up to the elements :)
I have vinyl siding also and it too includes a melted spot from the grill just like yours, lol. 😢 Can't wait to see what you fo with it. Love the bench. I just found your channel and subscribed. Im also an empty nester.
Thank you! And we have so much in common!! You're awesome! Virtual hugs my fellow empty Nester! And I have a few ideas rolling around in my head!!!
Love that bench
You knew this was a problem for “a very long time” yet just waited to see the damage it might cause! You are special uh?
We have 100s of trees on property.. leaves were all green, so we figured we would wait until the leaves either turned brown or didn't grow in the spring. And it wasn't next to our house. We never would've guessed (based on physics) it would fall backward toward the coop from the direction it was leaning.
Arborist here, that tree has been rotten for a long time. Sometimes a perfectly healthy looking tree is rotten to the core.
Yes... we could tell it looked rotten, didn't realize the extent.
@@ourlifesimplified To be fair, you never know until it's fallen or cut open.
@@estbroc9860 I 100% can understand that... as there was only a little opening at the bottom of the tree, the leaves were growing and green, no indication the rest of the tree had issues...
Bradford pear tree?
Actually maple...
Omg, he's hilarious. I want to give him all the pets! I hope he's chasing a dragonfly and not a bee.
I'm not sure what it was.. I was too far away... but I hope so too. I was observing him from a distance while I was on my morning walk.

A dragonfly 🤨you’re spot on 🐾🐾❣️🐶
I'm not sure what it was.. I was too far away... I was observing him from a distance while I was on my morning walk.
How do you care for the hydrangeas at the end of the season?
Depending on the year. I noticed I can cut back my Anabell (I think that is what the white hydrangeas are called), and they grow back bigger. The other 3 hydrangeas that turn color depending on the acidity level, I cut back 2 yrs ago. They're taking a little longer to come back in terms of flowering, but I still get some. I also fertilize them (early spring) with hydrangea food (to increase acidity because i love the blues) and epsom salt.
What state are you in?
I'm in southern Illinois. Zone 6b. These are my hardy bananas.
Appreciate the gardening, but are we just going to ignore the dalmatian in the shot?
That's Zeus.... my handsome boy!
The birds are determined to beat you to the berries
Lol.. you just might be right! I did see 1 of the berries partially eaten!
I am waiting for my first order non rx cause i am taking them to my eye doctor. But i got 2 base one in clear and one in clear blue but i got 18 tops yeah . But humana sends me 500.00 dollars a year plus a 300 dollar allowance for eyes. So basically i go 20 pairs of glasses for free really.
That is great to know! I know I did see on their website that insurance can be applied if you have it. I still LOVE my glasses! I keep ordering more. I have about 20 or so TOPS + SUNTOPS ... I love the ability to change my look daily!
You can catch the follow-up on the baby chicks I incubated for my daughter. I then attempted to wing-sex the chicks at 4 days old. You can see the results of accuracy in this video around the 21:25 mark.
You went too fast and didn’t explain very clearly why you thought some were males vs females. Hope your identifications were accurate.
Thank you for your feedback.... I was trying to get the baby chicks back to their brooder box w/ heating plate as they need to be around 95 degrees their 1st week, so I apologize for moving too quickly. Around the 1:20 mark I show pics of the info I gathered showing the difference between males and females, to try to compare what I was looking at on the baby chicks. And it ended up being 5 males and 2 females lol. I included that video towards the end of another video (I'll have to try to find it). This was my first time sexing baby chicks, and I think it really needs to be done within the first 2 or 3 days after hatch. And as mentioned in the video and notes, it depends on the breed of bird too. wing-sexing isn't 100% reliable based on info I read.
You can actually find that answer in my 'Chicken Chores' video ... around the 21:25 mark ... :) th-cam.com/video/igdTwOwTMm4/w-d-xo.html (let me know if you can see it. I'm still trying to learn to navigate TH-cam)
Pop the membrane from the shell on rounded part of egg with the back of a spoon it will make a snap sound and release from the shell making for much easier peeling!
Is popping the membrane before or after boiling eggs?

How do you get the humidity down?
Im not sure where you are in the process... but if you filled the water reservoir too full and/or the vent is not open where it should be, then the Humidity could be off. Humidity is controlled by how full the water reservoir is and the vent control in the back...
How have your strawberries done since you’ve posted this video? I had a similar looking stalk with the top tiers looking the best. I’ve been holding out hope that the lower ones are okay. How are yours?
I can do a follow up video. Or short soon... the top strawberries are doing great.. the ones I planted that looked dead, I think only a couple came out of it.. but as the season gets warmer, the strawberries 🍓 they will grow runners like crazy and it will be easier to "plug" in the runners into other pockets .. and I've already eaten several of the strawberries!!
I just did a quick short for you to see the progress...
That's beautiful..❤
Thank you!
They eat the other unwanteds. I had a 6' black rat snake by my front door. It had to go because I had a 5lb yorkie.
That is the skin of a timber rattler, probably attracted to the wood chips. I’d start wearing snake proof boots in the yard. Timber rattlers have a nasty bite and 2 inch fangs. Be careful! They often stay in same area once they’ve identified what they consider their territory. The snake skin indicates the snake is living nearby.

Get pure wood ash from a Barbecue place and mix into the soil. Make sure NO lighting additives were added to the wood. NO lighter fuel, gasoline, kerosene or anything else. Your plants will grow 3X's better than with used coffee grounds or egg shells. Mix 1 ash to 3 soil. Your Welcomed 🫡
I will definitely try that... I do add other things too. Like my chickens' poo, compost, shredded leaves, etc... in the fall and again weeks before planting... then I add epsom salt, egg shells, coffee grounds at time of planting and during planting season... I do have a fire pit and was thinking about adding the ash from that as I've heard to do that. I will experiment with this and place on half of my garden to compare the difference!! Thank you for the suggestion!
@ourlifesimplified My friend bought a couple of acres in Washington state and wanted to try his hand at gardening. He had cleared and burned quite a bit of dead trees and had a "rood" of ash. I told him to save it to mix with the virgin soil for his garden. He read up on organic gardening and did as I had suggested. His onions grew the size of large grapefruits and the zucchini was at least the length of his arm! If you notice places that have been destroyed by fire, have the most fertile land and grow the hardiest fruits and vegetables. Just a suggestion, if you want to add your mentioned items, egg shells, coffee grounds and chicken poo, make sure they're completely absorbed and dissolved into your compost for at least a year and you're turning and mixing during that time. Just a suggestion...
@@TheNester. Thank you for your input! I will definitely try the ash this year... and yes.. the chicken poo, I added in the fall .. although I did add earlier this spring when I cleaned out the coop. there have been several rains and tilling in. Hopefully that will be ok. I've done it in previous years and it seems to work well, but I've never planted a year past adding the poo... so not sure the difference. I have videos from last year's garden... it was like a jungle.. But I will definitely try ash this year. I'd like to do 1/2 the garden for comparison and document via video as a demonstration. Thank you!
@ourlifesimplified If you're going to mix in ash, DO NOT add Epsom Salt. That adds too much Magnesium to the soil and could kill your plants. Remember, soil does not naturally have Epsom Salt or Egg Shells, if it were me, I would eliminate them all together. Better to go All natural than to ruin the entire crop. Again, just a suggestion.
Interested to see how they develop in one season.
Me too! I like to video my progress... I wish I would've done it years ago... I've planted over 70s trees and other plants over the years... it's amazing the transformation, but I don't have it documented on video 😕 ... but the transformation is amazing so far!
The frames do look great on you.
Awe... Thank you... I needed that pick-me-up today!!!
Hey!! WE DIDN'T SEE THE "YOLK",either!!😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅. BTW, I actually was raised on a farm, producing what is now considered "free range". 350 @ one count, of laying hens/pullets/chicks/5 roosters. 3 10'x14' henhouses. We sold eggs/laying hens/ traded pullets@ grocery store/feed store/colored chicks for Easter/AND grandpa's hobby of Rooster trading. Simultaneously, we milked 4 cows/ raised/butchered 14 hogs per year, and gratefully fell asleep @9p.m. every night!!
I bet you have stories to tell... lol. You sounded like you were busy busy... I often wondered what it would be like to live on a farm and work as a farmer for a living! I'd love to do more, but currently, my full-time 'day job' is telling myself to not do any more than what I'm doing, which everyone around me tells me, it's too much lol. I'm usually in bed by 8:30p now and wake up to my husband's 4:45 am alarm every day. So quick question... I've 'heard' what free range is, in terms of eggs that are sold at the grocery stores... but can you share what it actually is? just curious if it's the same as what I've heard.
@@ourlifesimplified Sure! According to "official"(times vary somewhat) definition, ( it IS NOT OFFICIALLY a rule/more like a guide-line) chickens that are allowed to wander aimlessly OUTSIDE their cage/hen-,house/ pen/coop for a period of 5/5.5/6+ hours per day, foraging for natural food. ( BTW; I hope you learned to provide fine gravel/CRUSHED shells( both egg-shells/certain types of oyster(see I-Net) or certain calcium supplements). Tip: also for free-range; provide emergency shelter of chicken-wire/tarp to protect from hawks( federally protected, so ya can't legally blast'em,) and open access to roost to escape weasels/cats/etc. Hawks circle HIGH, they look small, and hit suddenly. So some sort of tent/umbrella type cover over corner of pen is helpful!! Hawks usually try only once, mebbee twice, and if unsuccessfull move on, for THAT DAY!! But once they got your chickens mapped out, they WILL RETURN!! Weasel-proof your hen house w/aluminum, or sturdy plastic siding, type used for under-pinning on mobile homes, vertically 5 ft high(+8" into ground) Keep door clearances TIGHT. Keep ventilation above 5ft. Chicks need less O2, more heat. Hens need more O2/ less heat. Cool air dropping will warm for chicks/hot air rising will ventilate out. Other than that, ENJOY BREAKFAST!!
Can"t hear you over the music.
Oh no. I'll try to re-edit and see if I can fix that! Thank you for your feedback!
Do you have a high prescription? Like above 5? Im wondering how they look with the premium lense.
No... mines around -3.25 and -3.75. I'm not sure?

Yes! Love deviled eggs!
Egg Foo Yung is super easy & soooo good. You just need a few veggies or whatever you want to include. Soooo good. Also, key lime pie uses about 6 egg yolks.
Love key lime pie... but havent made it, yet... never had egg Foo Yung.. I'll have to look that up!
