Hi Thomas! Very nice video it helped me a lot to learn about gain staging in the Mastering Process! However there is one thing that im still confusing about.. You said in 9:30 - 9:35 that analog modeled plugins sound at their best at -18 LUFS... Now the question.. Is -18 LUFS the same as -18 dbfs ? Because whenever I watch a video about VU Meters in combination with Gain Staging people mention always DBFS instead of LUFS ... so that makes me confused .. Can you clear me up please... Big Like given to your Video ... Greetings from Luxembourg to you and Sofia!!
Oh always get excited when you two release a video.
Thank you! We’re glad to hear that☀️/sofia
I spent a year trying to understand this by experimenting and listening to professional mixes, but you just clarified it so nicely, so I really got one of those aha experiences! Thanks!
hello ...The swelling is for me , the most difficult thing to hear . Why ? is it because this artifact is more subtle? I don't know, but there is some listening work to adjust. Thank you Sofia.
I find that, if I haven’t thought about something before, it takes a while to start noticing it. Even after I know what to listen for. But then after a while, I can’t unhear it!😅☀️Sofia
for me, i find it harder to notice the swelling when I’m trying super hard to hear differences in dynamics. Try to relax and have a more casual listening and you might be able to notice it clearer. It might also be related to listening fatigue. Try switching from headphones to monitors or vice versa, and turning up or down the volume.
What tool are you using to generate the line graph of loudness over time? Seems like an extremely helpful utility for study. Thank you!
The graphs are from the render statistics in Reaper. /Thomas
Is 'swelling' just a type of 'pumping' or 'breathing'?
They are all overlapping names for different compression side effects, and it's a bit subjective exactly what they refer to.
Possibly the best Gain Staging explanation I've seen in 30+ years of audio engineering!
i recently hear a lady gaga song and jesus christ it has no dinamics at all, the loudness war needs a comeback
@@sickassbeats to comeback but this time the dynamics band needs to win
A) Thank You....again. B) Curiosity: What would happen if you placed a super clean compressor across the whole mix, and side-chained it to the kick, for like 0.5dB gain reduction, Synchronized to the groove of the song? Could something like that result in a deeper groove that isn't so much heard as felt? I know you wouldn't do that in Mastering per se, but you guys Lazer focus on half dB moves & movements, and I've always been curious.
Yes, that is a fairly common trick in modern productions at the mixing stage, either on the full mix or on buses. /Thomas
@MasteringExplained Sweet, yes I've heard House & EDM producers talk about it. Do you have any experience with artifacts coming to you at the mastering stage? For instance, I'd be looking to Deepen the groove of the song without noticeable pumping. You guys talk about 'Nudging' the sound, and that's what I'm wondering. Can a side-chained compressor be used to invisibily Nudge a Mix, Groups, and/or individual instruments deeper into a groove? Without adverse effects. And independent of any concerns for dynamic range control. Purely as a Groove process, to effect the feeling of movement. (P.S. I can't wait to see your Monitor Controller. I've fought for years with Reaper's lack of a real Solo / Control Room bus. It's time to revisit. )
A trick i learned from riddim dubstep producers is to add a couple ten ms of latency to an entire sidechain to space the mix in both dynamics and time while also giving it a natural sense of groove. I’ve never tried it on anything other than electronic bass music, but in theory, it could achieve something similar to what you’re looking for.
@CK-3K interesting, so the ducking would trail the beat, relaxing the groove or making it lazy? Still feeding the kick into the SC of a comp across the whole mix?
Wonderful examples thank you very much 🌻
This is the first time I have heard about threshold automation for the compressor, That's an Interesting idea.
automating the ratio and threshold can make for some really interesting masters. if you wanna end your chorus with a bang, you could subtly increase the ratio with the makeup to build some tension in the mix. Automating the attack and release for a verse and lowering it for a chorus can make the verse sound softer and the chorus more aggressive. You could apply these techniques in the mix as well for individual tracks.
Came here for the knowledge, stayed for the Swedish accent. JK. Great explanation and demonstration
Thank you so much! Very well explained.
Good video

Very helpful and good clear examples. 👍

That makes a lot of sense thank you 👌🏻🦸🏽♂️
Fantastic video. Thank you.
it's great thomas. It's a very clear explanation, but difficult to hear and put into practice. Of course i 'll have to make mistakes to hear all these nuances. On the other hand I find the words you give for these auditory sensations very fair and didactic... we feel that you know how to teach. bravo Sofia and Thomas from the north of our planet. my respects to you.
Thanks! Yes, hearing compression is difficult but it gets easier. Just keep practicing. 🎶 ☀️ /Thomas
@@MasteringExplained yes sure ... but you give a good way with good word to catch all these sensations or fine perception . Thanks again .
I will point out what I learned and agreed with as a Music Tech major in 2010. A virgin recording, okay use dither, but you already have circuit noise from your preamps. As a mastering engineer you would be working with something that already has had noise introduced to it. Now a raw/virgin Virtual Instrument track. Maybe dither is important. I might use it to print a virgin track but really . You already have noise from synths and preamps in your file, now are you printing pure sine waves from some test test equipment. Oh but wait. There are amps making noise involved. Dither would be appropriate for printing pure virtual sign waves. ... you see where I am going.... dither is just adding noise to 16 previous noise sources.... not necessary
If you're not using dither when going to 16 bits, make sure to at least check the fades. /Thomas

Another great video! Thank you :) now I know what to listen for
Very informative again. Thanks so much.
Great explanation on why compressors sound different from one another, even with similar settings. I never understood that.
Great video, as always. Informative and with very good audio examples. I think the advice you give in this channel really top notch. Cheers.
Excellent video

We don't really know, we're aiming for early/mid 2025 but it could be later or earlier. It already works perfectly for our workflow, but there are a few things to fix to make it work properly for a wider audience. /Thomas
@@MasteringExplained Thanks. Understand.
👏👏👏
Thanks. Best/Mathias
Thanks for the great videos! It would be great if you could also provide an example of how and with what kind of tools you would actually compress the material.
Great listening examples! Thank you 🌻
We had to re-upload this video. Thank you to everyone who liked and commented on the first version. 💚
Really appreciate this
Can you do the 2 mono input output tricks on pro tools ?
Hello Sofia and thomas ... Maybe I'm wrong, but you don't talk much about clippers... However, it seems to me that nowadays, rather commercial and very popular productions use clipping excessively... What do you think about that ? Should we push much further, the use of this kind of tool in order to gain in loundness for example ? If you practice this... would you have any advice to give us ? Many thanks for all your work on youtube .
AMAZING!!!!
