It doesn't take very long for a jet to veer off course, but to veer over 200 miles off course and then to ignore communication is problematic. It is abominable, and impossible to comprehend how anyone can rationalize shooting down a passenger plane. This was during the cold war, and there was little-to-no trust between countries. The Russian plane looks a little more modest and its design is more like a dove, a peaceful bird. The American plane looks more majestic, its design is more predatory, it reminds of some kind of lizard or a fighting dog. At least in this you can see the national mentality.
