Toronto Bike Lane Removals - The Latest on This Controversial Move - Let's Discuss the two sides. These are decisions that can affect urban planning and infrastructure in cities all across the country in Canada, not just Toronto. Should the province be allowed to tell the city how to do it's urban planning, if so how far should the province be allowed to go?

    They just want cyclists dead. If you take up a lane of car traffic as a cyclist, since you’re a “motor vehicle” they’ll honk and you, swear at you and sometimes even hit you. if you bike on the sidewalk, you’ll get ticketed and yelled at by locals. So their solution is “just don’t use a bike” which, coming from Doug Ford, makes a lot of sense

    I think it's pretty clear that Ford does not actually care about transit. The only time he gives it any funding is if/when he thinks it can get non-drivers off the road and out of his way. Because he cares about vehicular traffic. Which explains why he's was willing to spend billions to fund new subway construction while also wanting to spend what would be many times more for his demented 401 tunnel proposal yet rejected drastically less expensive and proven effective options like bus and bike lanes and dislikes streetcars and surface LRTs.

Otherwise let them ride with traffic as the law sais they can do. Drivers should not encounter even one second of delay due to someone who can not ride at traffic speed. Removing the bike lanes will not do anything to improve traffic congestion. Even with the bike lanes removed, an additional lane will not be gained. On-street parking will still be blocking the right lane. So instead now you will have increased congestion with bikes competing with cars for space, rather than each having their own space. This is a massive waste of money for zero benefit to anyone. This has zero to do with improving traffic. It's just about anti-bicycle ideology.

    So next, ford will remove the 401 bike lanes, right? Since they're exclusively the problem, I'm told..? 😏😏 For real, the saddest thing is that this will do NOTHING for Toronto's conjestion, AND will result in higher road deaths for cyclists and pedestrians, and also makes things more dangerous for drivers too. Ford knows this, hence why they are trying to prevent injured parties from sueing the province, because they know this plan will INCREASE fatalities. So many drivers are insane, going 60Kph on 40Kph roads and I'm sick of it. Bloor will become a very dangerous road again. it's a lose-lose situation for everyone, all for a bankrupt Conservative culture war. The Provincial overreach here is revolting, and I for one don't want some random yahoo in Stratford for example, telling my city of Toronto how to construct our local infrasture, yet Toronto once again is bullied into submission by voters who dont even live here. @@ml8104 People use the options that are provided to them. In North America we put by far the most investment into infrastructure for cars and lagged in transit infrastructure compared to other parts of the world, so people here use cars. That doesn't mean cars are more efficient; it just means they're what's funded. And it isn't a reason not to shift funding to other modes. Efficiency can mean different things but usually refers to the amount of one or more resource such as money, energy or land required to build and maintain infrastructure to move a certain number of people compared to other infrastructure types. Or it can mean the ratio of benefits to costs of a particular form of infrastructure. And roads serving cars is less efficient in all these ways than several other modes including transit and active transportation (like walking and biking). That doesn't mean cars should be eliminated, but the proportion of traffic that they represent needs to be reduced in an urban setting if the city is to operate in an efficient way.

So if in 2021, they knew at a base level it was going to be 2 years (in addition to previous delays) behind. I can only imagine where they are at today. I wonder how much equipment and of the project is getting close to needing to be rebuilt. 15 years of construction; some of the stuff they laid down has to be getting close to needing maintenance or updating potentially.

    Spending $360 million to update 16 cars means $3 mi/car. That is a lot of money. The older cars date from the late 1970s 20 will be 70 years old when the upgrade finishes. They should put more seating in pairs rather than quads with a few quads for groups. Half the seats have to be facing backwards because trains reverse. Refurbished cars can still be used in EMU service since with AC traction motors usually on 1 car in 3 or 4 is powered. This more efficient than powering all cars and is consistant with modern usuage.

  • @drewpatterson8261
    @drewpatterson8261 วันที่ผ่านมา

    If you guys want EMU's then the first thing we need to do is build the freight bypasses. So long as GO has to share track with freight, then the best we can hope for is dual powered locomotives hauling the refurbished coaches. There's so much work that needs to be done before we can get to fully electric trains. Metrolinx is misleading the public by claiming it'll happen in a couple years. It won't. Build the freight bypasses, get all lines up to "all day, 2 way" service, and then let's talk electrification.

    While the investment is helpful, and I can appreciate that these rail cars are being refurbished right here in Ontario, I do find it frustrating that we aren’t, with electrification of the network, moving towards EMUs instead. They would allow for better acceleration of each train consist even over an electric locomotive, helping to shorten the ride for everyone. I would love to see the times increase enough that we could cut out / cut down the express trains on Lakeshore because the local trains are only add an extra 5-6 minutes because of how quickly they get up to speed. Evidence of this can be seen with CalTrain in the Bay Area down in California. With the switch to EMUs, the trip times were drastically reduced for local trains, and even express trains added more stops but still make the full trip in less than an hour.

      While I’d love to see some EMU’s purchased for the intensely frequent service planned for the GO-owned sections of the lakeshore (ex Burlington to Union), I think you’re being quite optimistic in how quickly electrification will happen given how glacially slow the contractor process has been. Even if they start hanging catenary tomorrow morning, we’ll still need a ton of bilevels for years. Hell Confederation and Grimsby will be online soon and I’m not sure if they’ll even be electrified in our lifetime!

    • @jonatamaniuk
      @jonatamaniuk วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ oh no I assure you I’m well aware the glacial nature that is our government contracts and procurement 😂. You are right, we will need bi-levels for decades, especially since the route down to Niagara beyond Hamilton is not owned by GO and ownership of the tracks for the Milton and Richmond Hill lines would also be very much up in the air. My thought, however, is that if there was a shift to EMUs, even if it was not overnight, there is enough rolling stock to keep each part of the network that is not electrified going, be it until they do finally electrify or indefinitely. Refurbishing could be done at a slower pace in order to keep up with that demand while the shiny new fleet rolls out. If I were to take a guess, I’d say we would take the same amount of time Caltrain took, at least 7 years, for each line to complete electrification. They have similar levels of bureaucracy to deal with I would think. Don’t misunderstand, I still appreciate the investment and the prudent nature of keeping the existing rolling stock going however much longer, as well as making it more power efficient for when electrification does happen. It does also keep the fleet uniform, understanding that as stated some parts will not electrify for a long time, if ever.

    look, i'm in favour of any transit investment and i only use the lakeshore line so i dont know if its worst on others and by how much. ill take your word for it. however, i think we should expedite the electrification of the lines and buy the rolling stock necessary instead of doing the referb and then immediately switching over.

      @@12evan89 I believe they’ll be doing the refurbishing of the existing bi-level rail cars and swapping to electric locomotives rather than swapping us to all-new EMU rolling stock sadly, kinda like many of the non-Acela trains on Amtrak’s North-East Corridor. @@12evan89 agreed. When I first heard about the electrification of GO lines, I was personally hoping for EMUs akin to the Stadlers that CalTrain started running in the Bay Area. I do think that Metrolinx is trying to save money where they can by continuing to use the old rail cars, but… doesn’t mean I suddenly love the plan. Now if they were also adding 2 bike cars to every train trip… that might sway me lol

    Truthfully, there are so many different things to be done it's hard to pick. Better rolling stock, electrification, improving and expanding existing infrastructure, expanding to new corridors, more stations and regional services are but just a few of the things that need to be done.

    If GO’s Richmond Hill line doesn’t get two way all day service, the 61 bus should get the later at least

    • @jonatamaniuk
      @jonatamaniuk 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Hawker5796 every line needs all-day 2-way service. Richmond Hill and Milton especially. Richmond Hill Line is a great line 1 relief route, as it’s not too far off Yonge (comparatively) and still somewhat connects to the subway up at Leslie / Oriel. If the connection at Leslie / Oriel were improved and 2-way all-day frequent service were present, I could see many people choosing the GO Train instead of Line 1, with capacity able to be scaled up on a faster electrified regional rail line that still connected into the inner city. Might even pull enough capacity off Line 1 to make delays on Ontario Line construction easier to handle for most commuters.

    I know its not feasable anytime soon, but Toronto SERIOUSLY needs to double-track the Yonge-University and Bloor subways so the TTC can run express trains that only stop at interchange stations and so normal trains can be diverter when repairs are needed on specific sections of the normal track. This would of course require new tunnels, so the cost would be quite high, but itd be worth it for the long term sustainabiltiy of the existing network, especially when these older lines are being extended so much and the original track is so old

    The new GO train cars are definitely not comfortable. The seat alignment to the back is not proportional and the headrest makes the neck hella sore. The older cars are better in terms of comfort. GO needs to redesign the seats

      Aren't they already doing that? If you look at many of the coaches in the newer two-toned colour scheme coaches, some have rivets showing and others don't. The ones that don't are newer cars with usb charging and nicer seats with curved head rest cushions. The cars with rivets visible, even when they have the newer colour scheme, don't have any of that. Which suggests to me they were older cars repainted into the new colour scheme
