    I just received mine today and I have to say I'm really disappointed that there is no directions on assembly, operation, or troubleshooting! For a 1K machine, you would think they would have spent a couple extra dollars and created a user manual.

    Where do you find the lap blade on the tile saw? I have the tile saw but I’m at a loss as to what to put on it.

      hi Julie, I searched TH-cam and found several how-to videos on changing blades in tile saws. There are many brands out there but the selection of videos seems to cover most of what you need. If you need a lapidary blade a good source in Kingsley North Lapidary. here is just one of the videos I came across: th-cam.com/video/-twRTDLyCLo/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps👍

      Hi Charles, It turns out that my machine was damaged (bent motor shaft) during shipping. I’m getting a new/replacement motor and will then I’ll be able to use the machine and try to see if I can figure out what might be causing your problem. I plan do do a video to demonstrate using the new machine to make an intarsia in the near future.

    Hi Bill. I just bought your book a couple weeks ago and am working on my first picture frame intarsia. Using a flat lap is quite frustrating, and I'll probably DIY an intarsia grinder, but I had seen HP's impressive intarsia grinder TH-cam vid and I'm really happy to see you did an unboxing on it.

    • @oldrockhound1595
      @oldrockhound1595 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Adam, Glad you enjoyed the unboxing and hope the book is helpful for you. I understand your frustrations with the flat lap. I first learned to make Intarsia using a flat lap many years ago before someone had the bright idea of adding a 9-deg shelf. I will say that with a bit of practice and patience you can essentially master the flat lap technique. It helps to have a good light source behind the lap shining down onto the area. Then lean down in front of and nearly to the level of the lap so you can get a better perspective of the, hopefully 90deg, angle you’re holding it at. Like I say… practice. Good luck👍

    • @oldrockhound1595
      @oldrockhound1595 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      check with a local rock and gem club to get some ideas for sources. The best place other than the local clubs is probably rock and gem shows. EBay sells slabs but they can be pricey.

    I would really like it to have an Ac motor with speed control on it, for my use that would be ideal. Looks like a good machine though. Right now I use the flat lap on my faceting machine right now for all my inlay and intarsia needs. The lamp at the end was silly, Bill you got a great sense of humor and talent!

    • @oldrockhound1595
      @oldrockhound1595 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      John Rowland of Highland Park said he decided on single speed motor primarily due to increased cost of variable. The flat lap is a great tool for intarsia and inlay and certainly more affordable. That’s how I learned to do Intarsia and I still use my flat lap and wheeled grinder for inlay.

    Believe it😂 or not, Will “Smitty”mSmith taught me what he knew about intarsia, many, many years ago. I use a Sapphire faceting machine for all my work. I’m not an engineer, and have been trying to create an eight pointed Christmas Star using Lapis & Opal. I don’t get much time to work on intarsia, but eventually will get it figured out. Love & Missing you, ready for 2024??

    Thanks SO MUCH for the lessons. I'm retired and starting my lapidary hobby. Picked up an old, very old, B-10 Highland Park and restoring. Love the idea of the polisher turned Intarsia. Big Bertha, as I call her, will be retrofitted. Love the lessons, and will be watching more.

    What if I don't want my hole to go all the way through ? What is a good way to make that circular "well" or depression ?

    • @oldrockhound1595
      @oldrockhound1595 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I've done this numerous times as follows. Drill part just way into the stone with the core drill of the size hole you want. The depth will be determined by the stone's thickness. I usually try to judge it as roughly half way. If you have a precision drill press you can set a stop. I just use a cheapie drill press so do it by eye. At this point, take a small diameter drill or core drill and begin drilling a series of random holes into the center plug of material that you want to remove. Eventually you'll gradually eat away all of the center plug material. The bottom of the cavity will be rough but it won't matter since you'll be filling it in with another stone or maybe crushed stone/epoxy mix. Let me know if you have any further questions. Good luck👍

      Hi Debra, Re: Cyanoacrylates (super glue) vs. 2-part epoxy. You’re correct in that using epoxy would solve all issues. However, sad to admit but I’m too impatient to wait the hours required for the epoxy to cure😉. Therefore it’s perfectly legitimate to use super glue when constructing the Intarsia and as a final step, attaching a backing with epoxy. This will head off any potential negative issues resulting for the use of super glue. Additionally, the Loctite Gel super glue I now use claims to be “water/moisture” resistant as well as less susceptible to shock/vibration. Regardless, in the 20+ years I’ve been doing this, I’ve never had any pieces come apart due to glue failure.

    I haven't had so much fun learning in ages 🥰🤣 However..makes my wrists hurt; why not put a piece of pool noodle over the edge of your grinder tray? Second random thought...if your drill is turning opposite the direction of the grinding wheel, it may result in faster cutting....? GREAT video, much better than many of the other videos from the school I've watched. They need to put your camera skills to work with Diane Mason, so I can actually see what she's doing, for instance.... Thank you so much!

    • @oldrockhound1595
      @oldrockhound1595 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used a regular drill press before. The drilling process is pretty messy (I.e. wet) so I tried to prepare the area so everything wouldn’t get wet and possibly rust.

    Hint on the super glue in that type of dispenser. Before you activate the dispenser, the part that you pinch for the glue can be removed by holding the top and pulling out the bottom, it just pulls out, then cut with clippers each side of the top. You now have the full tube to use because the other way wastes a lot.

    • @oldrockhound1595
      @oldrockhound1595 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Levan, I look forward to meeting you in August. I think you'll enjoy the class as we always have a good time and everyone ends up with quite a few nice intarsia pieces. Since you will be cutting the slab make it at least 1/4" thick. That will give you plenty of glue surface for the borders. If, after you get the entire piece constructed, you decide it's too thick then you can thin the whole intarsia down just before attaching the backing. Bill
