Watch This Before You Get Into Macro Photography! Kitlens VS Canon 100mm Macro L Lens
This was a fun experiment! In this video, Carl shows you EXACTLY how much the difference in quality there is between that old cheapo 18-55mm kit lens that came with every camera and the premium glass from Canon (w/ the red ring!).
TL;DR: If you wanna get into macro photography, consider getting modifiers first before immediately purchasing premium glass! Unless money isn't an obstacle for you, of course. In which case, mind sharing some? lol

    On a recent city trip, a second loaned body with a fast prime, made the 50mm much more useful (and used), than having to swap lenses to WA zoom and back all the time, and keeping up with the group. That said, didn't have more than that photo gear. Backpack was filled with rest of the gear, so anything more wouldn't have fit anyway.

    buying super expensive camera and lenses, to edit the pictures in LR with black and white and grain, to make them look vintage. This is progress.

    • @CheapButGoodPhotography
      @CheapButGoodPhotography 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      To be fair, this "vintage" era of presenting photos is probably just another swing and it will eventually swing back to normalcy or to some other type of editing. I remember a few years back it was orange and teal, then it swung back to natural-looking photos. Even further back, I remember vignetting and sepia being the fad until, again, it swung back to the more natural look. There was also the "Peter Mckinnon" era when everyone edited their photos to have more darker shadows and vibrant skin tones. This is all just part of the process, I guess. But it does make me wonder what the next phase is going to be.

    • @CheapButGoodPhotography
      @CheapButGoodPhotography 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's awesome! Congrats! And here are my settings for this combo: For most scenarios: - Aperture Priority (the "A" on the mode dial, top left side of the camera) - ISO set to Auto - Go to custom menu > Option B (button/dial) > Button function > Set the following: -> Fn1 (AEL/AFL) -> Fn2 (The magnification sign. Should look like this 🔍) -> Right button (ISO) - > Down button (exposure compensation, the icon with the +/- symbol) - Go to custom menu > Option E (Exp/ISO) > Set the following: -> EV Step to 1/3EV -> ISO to Auto -> ISO Step to 1/3EV -> ISO-Auto Set to: High limit = 3200; Default = 200 - Image Stabilization: IS1, set to 24 (because it's the closest to 25mm on this camera) How I use the combo (with the above settings) 1) I frame my shot and roughly adjust my focus 2) On the LCD screen, I tap on where I wany my focus to be 3) I press Fn2 to magnify the focus area and turn the focus ring to dial in my focus 4) When in focus, I press the Fn2 button again to get back to the normal screen 5) I check again to see if my shot is framed how I want to then I click the shutter button This should cover most of your shooting needs with this combo. Other times, you can choose Manual mode (the M on the mode dial) for low light shots or very specific looks. Or, you can choose shutter priority (the S on the mode dial) to also get certain looks. I hope this helps! Also, the POV portion of our E-M5 video shows how I use this exact combo. Should be at roughly 11:15 mark. Great video! Appreciate the focus on photography, composition, lightning, not just video for the ZV-1. Having trouble deciding between compact cameras, I have the ZV-1, and the RX100VII on my list mostly for photography with the occasional dip into video. Any thoughts or other camera recommendations?

    • @CheapButGoodPhotography
      @CheapButGoodPhotography 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you can afford the RX100 VII, that is definitely the superior choice compared to the ZV-1. But if neither of them satisfy you, one other point-and-shoot I'd recommend is the Lumix LX100. Larger sensor than the ZV-1 because it's a full micro 4/3, a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 Leica lens, has an EVF like the RX100, and also shoots in 4K. Only downside, to me, is that it's worth $800 and I don't have that type of money 😅

      Definitely the Olympus. It has a larger sensor but, more importantly, it gives you the option to get a much better lens than what the ZV-1 offers. For the used price of the ZV-1 (~$500), you can get an E-M5 and a 25mm f/1.8 lens in good-excellent condition. It still depends on what you're going to be using them for, though. Purely for photography, the E-M5 is going to open more doors for you but it's definitely not a video camera, especially not in 2024. A more expensive alternative with better reach is the Tamron 17-70 but the extra reach isn't all that helpful for talking heads like these. If you're more of a prime lens person, I also recommend either of the two Sigma trios. One set is at f/2.8 so they're much cheaper but just as sharp.

    Actually, the first mirrorless camera to have an integrated EVF wasn't the Fuji X-Pro 1 either... if we're talking straight up cameras and not specifically mirrorless cameras, there were a ton of point and shoot or bridge camereas in the 2000s that had some weird crappy EVFs, but they were integrated to the camera, and no through an attachement. If we're talking specifically about mirrorless ILC bodies, then I think the very first one was the Panasonic Lumix G1, very first micro-four thirds body from Lumix released in 2008. On other mounts, the Sony NEX 7 was the first Sony mirrroless on the E mount to have an EVF and it was released in 2010. On the Fujifilm side, the X100 would be released in 2011 and the X-Pro1 that was the very first X mount camera was released in 2012.

    This will be long so sry but really love the vid and tips. but as a viewer some thing to help you in the video is that I find that you should show everything to the camera and go slower with the presentation of the product with close ups of everything ( even the little thing) with out glare. for the photo shoot I suggest that you moving the camera to the action is better to see what you are doing for the poses and move the camera to you and not you to the camera to see your face better when your talking and giving info. and if possible you can do voice overs in the uneventful things or taking pictures to get better audio or doing quick overview montages if your weird about audio. lastly I think you would keep it one topic or smooth it out from unboxing to photos to tips is a lot in a vid and feels rushed. but in the end am just a person with no photo, vid, editing, planning experience so very good pics, vid length, and energy. amazing 13 mins keep up the good work and hope you succeed ❤ ( nice hair cut)

    Frankly, image quality probably peaked around 10 years ago anyhow, so the 60D should be very good enough for stills photography. The fact that it doesn't have crazy eye/subject autofocus tracking like most cameras have nowadays is a great thing for beginners. Its a powerful feature for pros and enthusiasts sure, but it spoils the beginner and amateur. It makes them shoot haphazardly knowing they will get something in focus but won't actually compose anything. It makes photography for them about just being in the moment rather than taking that moment and imbuing their perspective in it. Afterall, the greatest pictures in the world were taken on manual cameras.

    Loved the content and you took some great photos. I’m with you on the older Olympus bodies. I run a em5 mark ii and only use manual vintage lens. Look forward to seeing more videos.

      Thank you! I have a collection of vintage lenses as well. My favorite of them all is my 58mm Helios 44K-4 paired with this em5 and a .7x focal reducer. I think it does a wonderful job of taking portraits.
