      Yes, there are authors who have found success publishing fiction on Substack! Google "the elysium" -- that author made about $20k if I remember correctly on her serialized book.

    Hi Amy, I've been really enjoying your videos and binge watching so many of them. I'm wondering how you manage both your Substack and your blog. I'm considering start on Substack but I'm also wondering if I should start my own blog instead or do both. But I'm also wondering if I need to have different Blog posts on both my blog compared to the ones on stack. That would double the writing I have to do. As well writing for clients. It all sounds like so much work lol. I'm just wondering how you manage it all.

    • @sutoscience
      @sutoscience 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Glad you're enjoying them :) I had my blog prior to starting my Substack, so I'm treating my Substack as a weekly round-up of things I'm posting on the Internet + some exclusive content only for paid subscribers. My blog is for my travel blogs, book reviews, and a smattering of other things I want people to find me on via Google. I would recommend just starting and focusing on 1 -- I think Substack is a good platform to start with because it has so much organic reach whereas discovery is a lot harder when you get started with a blog!

    I just jumped on the bandwagon and published my first post and I'm excited about it! Thank you for your thoughts and walk through (I am now following you Substack!). Did you stop your mailing list completely? I have over 7,000 subscribers on there and I don't think most of them use Substack so I am debating what I should do - create unique content for Substack and my mailing list (I usually send an email 1 per week) and use Substack more as a 'blog'/online diary?

    • @sutoscience
      @sutoscience 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Congrats!!! Welcome to the bandwagon, it's fun here :) I moved my entire mailing list to Substack (and people were like thank god you switched substack is a way better and more readable platform!) so you can just import your mailing list. I think Substack pretty easily replaces a newsletter even though it has fewer marketing features, I find my readers enjoy it more

    Amy, could you please let me know how many posts you publish on Substack each week and what's the ratio of free to paid content? Also, do you lock all your previous posts after 2-4 weeks, or do you keep them free forever?

    • @sutoscience
      @sutoscience หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, I've published 2x per week for about 50 weeks straight now! And I lock all of my previous posts after I think 3 weeks, so they're only free temporarily. Most of my content is paid only!

    Hi Amy, thank you so much to generously share your journey! I do have a question: how did you grow your original 600 email subscribers? I believe that is the hard question for really newbie writers like me😶

    • @sutoscience
      @sutoscience 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had a newsletter on convertkit (unpaid) that I wrote and grew to 600 followers across like 5 years that I didn't really commit to writing regularly. It's only when I started writing on substack did I see real, continuous growth! You need incoming traffic to build your newsletter, and you can do that through a blog (like I started with at amysuto.com) or social media -- or both!

    • @sutoscience
      @sutoscience 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @sutoscience
      @sutoscience 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I cover this topic in my newsletter and in some of my future videos! But yes, that's a big part of it. Social media is one way, but some substack authors don't even use social media. Substack has a lot of organic growth so I highly recommend taking advantage of Substack notes!

    I used to be a freelance journalist - retired 7 years ago. Set up a substack in 2021 . Only did one article then got sidetracked by other projects . Returned in 2023 and wrote a few pieces. Then just launched a new substack about Movies. Substack is the only real platform that seems to cater to writers that I have found. I think Substack is pretty much a necessity if you just want to be an amateur writer. If you want to be a professional writer, I would start elsewhere and once you get some pieces published or a book published then start a substack.

    TLDR: Running a successful Substack newsletter involves enjoying the process of publishing, focusing on writing content that resonates with the audience, and being resilient in the face of subscriber fluctuations. 00:00 📈 Running a substack can have highs and lows, with the goal of reaching $8,000 a month in revenue, including surprising improvements and challenges. 01:11 📈 Enjoying the process of publishing and coming up with popular posts, learning to write things my audience cares about more quickly and seeing a big jump in total subscriber number. 02:11 📈 The focus of the substack publication is to write about various topics related to being a writer in the digital age, including AI tools, hiking experiences, books, social media, creativity, and making money online. 03:22 💰 Writer shares journey from minimum wage to $750/hour as a freelance writer in Hollywood. 04:19 💰 Article on practical tips for charging luxury rates as a freelance writer attracted the highest number of paid subscribers ever, leading to a community of people interested in creativity and marketing services on social media. 05:28 💰 Substack writer discusses losing subscribers after shifting focus from making money as a freelance writer to broader writer's journey content. 06:39 📚 Don't want to repeat freelance writing basics covered in my book, focusing on adding nuance to the conversation in my newsletter. 07:58 📈 Creating fresh content is key to growing a successful Substack newsletter, and it's important to be resilient in the face of losing subscribers who don't resonate with your content.

    Your audit of my Substack was really helpful. I'm in the discovering my main themes phase. I'm almost there and have some direction. I'm experimenting with paid posts. I'll probably go all in with it once I hit 100 subscribers. For now, I want to see what's lighting me up, what's lighting my readers up, and where the 2 intersect. Looking forward to your explanation of threads and chat:-)

    TLDR: Implementing a paywall on a majority of posts can increase paid subscribers and revenue on Substack, and it's important to focus on diverse topics and writing styles to engage and resonate with your audience. 00:00 📈 The speaker updates on their Substack newsletter's growth to $96k/year, reaching 50 paid subscribers and seeing significant organic growth. 01:57 📈 Despite a decrease in views and open rate, implementing a paywall on 80% of posts increased pay subscribers and revenue, Substack's lack of follower export is shady, Substack has driven significant growth through organic traffic and recommendations, while Twitter has been abandoned due to de-prioritization of Substack links. 04:39 📈 The speaker is grateful for new subscribers and has shifted focus to writing about fiction, travel, and book recommendations, leading to growth in their newsletter, with free and paid substack audits helping to improve content and increase conversions. 07:56 📈 Focus on diverse topics and writing styles, not just Substack growth, to engage and resonate with your audience. 10:11 📈 Consistent posting has led to exciting newsletter growth, with plans to rebrand, incorporate video content, and utilize subscriber chats and other features on Substack. 13:12 📈 Consider the value of paid versus free content on Substack and use features like free posts, monthly subscriptions, and free trials to convince people to pay for your publication. 15:16 📈 Charge for 50% of posts to attract potential clients, offer valuable content and perks to increase Substack sign-ups. 17:35 💰 Pay walls are important because people value what they pay for, and paid newsletters are more valuable than free ones.

    Hey quick questions: 1. is there anyway to get sponsorships from company’s and display them in my posts? For example: I’m a tech guy, talking bout smartphones, then Apple comes up to me and want me to mention their newest iPhone with pictures or links… is that possible ? 2. Would you say twitter is completely useless now for Substack? And if yes do I really need any form of social media to do well on Substack when I’m first starting?

    • @sutoscience
      @sutoscience 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1. Yep! It's a bit more uncommon to see things like banner ads in Substack posts because it's more of a reader-subsidized platform compared to an ad-subsidized platform, but I see affiliate links like you're describing all the time, and I include them in my post as well. You just need to disclose when you have affiliate links. I would also just be careful not to make ads too overt -- especially in your emails to paid subscribers -- as they're paying for a less ad-heavy experience. 2. Twitter isn't completely useless for Substack, you just have to direct people to a page that isn't a Substack link to sign up or else Twitter will devalue your content. You don't *need* a form of social media to do well, but in my case it definitely helped me grow faster. I would highly recommend posting on Substack Notes though. If you're going to pick one platform to drive new subscribers to your publication, you should post there!

    Just bought your book! It’s arriving next week. One of my questions around writing on substack is: Do you think other topics than business, politics, writing, and entrepreneurship will be successful on Substack? I feel like on places like Medium and Substack I mostly seeing writers talking about writing and entrepreneurship with a little bit of politics. While I love reading and listening to these topics, I’m not sure their my “expertise”. I just published my first book, an intro to gardening book, and I already have an existing farm/nursery business, so it seems like I should go that route. I’m excited about Substack and I want to be different, too, but I don’t want to be soooo different that it isn’t worth my time? Are you seeing any trends? What do you think?

    😊Thank you for your helpful video. I have a question that I haven’t found a definitive answer for yet and I will greatly appreciate your insight. Can I submit work to SubStack and other sites like Medium? Do dual submissions become problematic?

    • @sutoscience
      @sutoscience 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not familiar with the Medium terms of service, but on Substack some people do republish work. However, you don't want to duplicate too much content because I believe Google and other search engines will ding you for it. It's best to just pick one platform and stick with it!
