A man of principle and taste. A connoisseur. I love Fading Suns for the same reasons I love Skyrealms of Jorune, and why I'm attracted to Free League's Coriolis: mystic space fantasy.

When I saw Coriolis, my first thought was that it seemed like an updating of Fading Suns. Sadly, I never picked it up, and the 2nd Ed that's on its way looks different. More Mothership/Death in Space. But I also haven't looked too deeply into it. One day. One day I'll bring Skyrealms to the table. It's one of the games that I used to flip through in the game store when I was first getting into the hobby, and I know images from it (2nd ed, I assume) inspired many of my early games.

Phenomenal acquisition Matt - I’ve been interested in playing or running this since it was released. I’ve been in a Dolmenwood campaign for awhile now, and the emergent nature of sandbox play has completely won me over.

When I was a kid in the late 80s, I feel like the game I ran was fairly "sandbox," just by default. I never used modules and I usually ran with only one or two players, so it was a lot of "let's see where things take us." In the 90s, with larger play groups, I feel like it tended more toward investigation/plot point play. I know in the long game of Earthdawn that I played in, there was an overall plot arc, though with input from players and not really railroading. And in a longer game of Deadlands, it was more that we'd wander from place to place and then go through a module. Ars Magica was closer to a sandbox, in that all the players had the opportunity to have a hand in shaping the story and world if they wanted. When I tried to run a Deadlands: Hell on Earth game with a more sandboxy vibe, I couldn't get my players to do anything. They just waited to react. Since getting back into the hobby, I've mostly run Call of Cthulhu or Tales from the Loop, both of which tend to be more plot driven. All that is to say that I love the idea of a more player-driven, sandbox game where the players find and follow whatever threads they want within the larger world. I just hope A) I can find players with the right mindset and B) I'm up to it. My GMing mojo is not as strong as it was before my 15 year break from the hobby.

@@matthewconstantine5015 The Discord community I’m in has identified this passive player persona quite acutely. While it’s been a behavior forever, of course, I think that the quickening of the entertainment culture (mobile devices, push notifications, live service games, streaming media) over the last twenty years has tuned a larger cohort towards what I call “amusement park” tabletop roleplaying. These players don’t really want agency, or risk, or consequences. Rather, they want the _illusion_ of those experiences for which they are happy to suspend their disbelief. I picked up The Sinking Tower module for _Dragonbane_ on Free RPG Day, and I think it’s a perfect example of what some of my friends are looking for and would appreciate in this style of play. For my part, I have negative interest in this mode so I’ve been investing more time in games like Traveller and Dolmenwood. I am eagerly looking forward to the _Ars Magica Definitive Edition_ Kickstarter later this month…

But I guess 16 years is a long time to accumulate, especially if you're not really paying attention. I'm going to have to substantially cool it on getting new stuff once we're installed in the new place, because it's pretty small. But that's probably a good thing. If a gridded map comes out? Forget about it. And from everything I've seen, 4th Ed is very heavy on tactical combat on gridded maps. D&D already facilitates and emphasizes a fantasy I don't especially enjoy (monster slaying/kicking in doors & stealing all the stuff). So the idea of playing a version that cranks all that up really doesn't interest me. I'm also not a fan of balanced encounters or even balanced parties, or the sort of superheroic High Fantasy of it all. It's the same reason that, even though I'm sure it will be very well designed and I wish everyone involved great success, I have no interest in the new MCDM RPG Draw Steel. HaHa - your recounting of this movie is nearly similar to my own. I was born in the 70s, so this movie was a bit before my time, and it never played on TV, but my brother had seen it at a festival in LA (perhaps when it was restored?) and recommended it to me. But all he had to say was that Gene Tierney was a "hoot" and really good, and I should like it because it was a kind of a heightened, twisted melodrama. We don't like to spoil movies for one another, so he didn't divulge the plot, but even he couldn't pinpoint exactly what the movie was; because I asked him if it was like Hitchcock and he said, yea, a bit, but not really. I asked if it was campy, and he said that would be the wrong word for it. But I eventually I did see it thru Criterion, and Gene Tierney was indeed "a Hoot." The mesmerizing dominance she has in the movie is something to behold, and as the POSSESSIVE melodrama of the plot unfolds (culminating in the lake scene) you just start to go, "This movie is WILD!" So I really like it. And it's worth repeat viewings where the stunning locations and home interiors really start to stand out. It's a great looking film and a well acting film. But the over-the-top aspects, like Tierney's character being introduced galloping broodingly through the desert while scattering her dead father's ashes, make the whole film wonderfully outlandish and deliciously dark.

I have been running RQ for years. I would never consider running dnd ever again [tried 5e once as a dm once hated it]. If you want to run a different game just run it. If the players rebel. Don’t turn the dnd tap back on. Given a choice between the wrong game and no game most players will try the wrong game. I played dnd, because nothing else was on offer at the time. That’s no longer true. I have players who have wanted to play RQ for literally decades, get online and find some. 😊

The only time I've tried to run D&D was with 3rd (not even 3.5). I hated it. I've played most of the editions over the years, with the exception of 4th, which came and went while I was out of the hobby. I've never liked it. So, yeah. It's never even an option when I offer to run games for folks. I wish I got the same satisfaction from online games as I do in-person. I play in one, and it's good. But I much, MUCH prefer in-person, around a table. I'm currently stuck in the suburbs, where nobody is close to anybody and there are few public places to gather. So, finding neutral ground to run games for strangers is tough, too. But I may soon be moving in closer to the city core, and if I do, I'm hoping to be able to have more access to in-person interactions. We'll see.

    1) When you accidentally shut the Zoom on Saturday I told DJ that I hoped you were fixing a G and T for yourself. ;) 2) Way more permutations on these dice than most sets! One can really mix it up. Both CoC and Traveller are really good with improv, since they are set in "universes" that are quite variable in potential stories. 3) I used the spirit of these dice to come up with the four choices you're currently contending with in Traveller. (You know three of the four.) The two you chose? Rescue + betrayal + environmental hazard + split assets and equipment is way more interesting than "just Rescue." :D Imagine someone who took the dice image literally. LOL Great video. Love the T-shirt.

First of all, love the shirt. Buc-ee’s forever! But also, with the phone, might look at ways to improve the audio, maybe move closer to it?

Love Buc-ee's! My wife is from Texas, and we had to go when I visited her family for the first time. It was wild. Now they're slowly expanding out of Texas. I think there are a couple locations opening in Virginia, even. Though nowhere near me. The new phone's mic doesn't seem to have the same pick-up as my old one...not that my old phone was that good, either. Sadly, I've already got like a dozen more videos recorded on the new one. I may look into using a headset & mic combo I've got, that I think may work with my phone. I don't think that would be a betrayal of my low/no effort brand, since I already have it. I've also had to re-record a couple videos because of some weird audio artifact that's randomly happened with the new phone. Ain't technology grand?

So far this is actually a pretty good review but I'm hearing about the same problems that are common even prevalent with seven addition and that's across the board I don't know what gas light is going to look like but it's probably going to look like this. And this sounds overwritten, a little too open-ended, poorly thought through with major concerns like it's the map just a picture map or is it supposed to actually be useful for the players or the or the keeper for that matter and if it's not really useful for the keeper and or the players then it must just be a picture map. But I'm also hearing that some areas were difficult to run because while they were fairly thoroughly written over and and detailed they lacked a storyline Coheed cohesion that made them fit in with the other events. So much of the 7th edition has like this catalog of dramatic personal and I at the beginning sometimes at the end and then a background that the keeper will know but there's no transmission of this information to the players within the campaign or the scenario. And then there's just a kind of jumping around I hear some a paragraph about this faction or person and within this paragraph there are kernels of a story and then there's another paragraph about a place and the history of that place and within the history of that place here's another Colonel of the story and it's it's just to much of an Easter egg hunt to really just pull out the story and make it easy to run the campaign and then plug in the details as the players get to those elements get to those areas get to those people get to those interviews get to those digging around points with spot hidden and snakes and ducking and dodging. It really really really really really really makes me miss second through 4th edition. I love what Paul fricker and Company largely did in 7th edition, especially with the new rules for luck and the pushed roll and spending luck on failed rolls. I do not like the chase system that takes the game out of the RPG and into the board game you almost need a map of pads and spaces and Monopoly pieces to move along in order to accomplish Chase things with the chase rules. I've always found them to be about it's interesting is cardboard. So I describe the same and ask for the roles but tell the story The Mechanics feed the story with speed dexterity obstacles hazards but the story has to be the biggest part. And I think that grabbing the action and plopping it into a board game it might as what we shoot some letters. With monsters granted but still. So every time I have a chase scene to negotiate I look for new ways to keep that going without fogging down the mechanics. This campaign it doesn't sound like something I'm going to spend $35 for a hard copy but I might spend $17 for the PDF file. I'd really like to have a look at more content so I'll go in have a peek at the samples that are available on the chaosium.com website and fish around for more information some people who have actually purchased and run it like you like yourself. Congratulations bill on your first hope campaign! Congratulations for stepping back into the game after you know a long stretch. I did that myself. Raised my kids up into their late 20s before I was actually able to start running the game again had time and and things like that and had a group of people that were largely interested in playing including my daughter and son-in-law! That's a lot of fun and I could I could do a primer myself on having couples at the table and having your own offspring at the table you got to cut all those ties and get them to play for themselves and not protect one another incessantly oh no don't do that you might get hurt LOL or mom quit telling me what to do I am just asking for a roll here LOL I'm not your mom I'm your keeper of Arcane War drop that Mom stuff I'm going to have you make Insanity checks until you're 40 okay I will have her making sanity checks until she's 40 and she's loving every minute of it. I can't recommend the two-headed serpent more enthusiastically enough. I'm actually running it for the second and third time. What? No I don't have a Time Turner but I do have the home group who wanted to play it a second time, and a group about 20 mi away that I'm running at 4:00 every other week. So I'm running it for the second and third time almost simultaneously. Because of some delays and a convention that we all had in the middle and people being sick and other people moving and a lot of other other things we've had enough delays in both groups that they're both almost in the same place now. And what group is only supposed to be playing two-headed serpent every other week but we hit a particular portion of the campaign that takes place in Iceland that's going to take several weeks and we don't want to break away from it and play masks ofNyarlathotep in between so and I'm not ready to run the next portion of masks anyway. This which is deemed the most dangerous campaign written as a 7th edition pulp Cthulhu Adventure is pretty cool but there's that overwritten thing and 30 something pages of drama persona. No. I'm not kidding. I originally ran it in the 90s as a consolidated softback book and honestly I keep reverting to the original from the hugely elaborately presented 7th edition $150 to volume 42 LB book and handout set. I did buy the prop set from things we love her at Historical Society. Seth has a box opening of that. You should check it out other people have done so as well. And it's it's worth buying the handouts are so well done. So there's that but the original is a little under 200 pages no it's not even that! And the 7th edition is 700 pages. Yep. Takes a lot of text to fill up that many sheets of paper. Not that it isn't worth it and it isn't beautiful and that isn't really a lot of fun but I run into the same problems so many pieces of the storyline are sequestered in paragraphs about people places or things meant to give you information but the storyline such as it is has been deconsolidated and Scattered like seeds of grass throughout the campaign which is considerable. Okay thanks again for your comment here for your video review. I'm definitely going to check out this particular book. And see what I think

If I ever run this one again, I'll definitely be doing some re-writing. I usually do, but I'll probably do a lot. The time travel chapter I mention that could happen at any time, for example. I'd probably just lock that down and have it be something they could figure out at one or two specific points along the way. Same with the Dreamlands, which to be honest, I'd probably just drop completely. It never came up in my run-through, but I think I might just leave it out. I'm sort of torn. On the one hand, I like having all the characters with good roleplaying notes and whatnot. And I like things being somewhat open ended. But, there's such a thing as too open ended. There's enough in this one I really like that I do think I'd like to revisit it, and in fact, I think I'd like to dramatically expand several parts of it. But it would definitely require a lot of work on the part of the Keeper. When I think back on it, I'm bummed I didn't have more real-world time, so my players could have spent a lot more adventure time in the underground world. I have heard really positive things about Two Headed Serpent. When I was looking for a campaign to run and settled on A Cold Fire Within, Two Headed Serpent just wasn't quite what I was in the mood for, but I think it's one I'd like to check out none the less. Sadly, I've only managed to get a single one-shot of Call of Cthulhu run in the last two years, so I'm not really holding my breath for the point where I run another ongoing campaign.

its definitely hard to find people who want to try different types of fantasy RPG. Every local community I encounter its all D&D and maybe Pathfinder. I want to try Runequest too but not sure how many people play it

I keep trying. Had a DCC game fizzle out before it really began earlier this summer. It's not even THAT far from D&D, yet...not much interest. May try for some Sci-Fi next time, as I know a few people who really don't like Fantasy, but they're also super busy & only somewhat into RPGs at all. Fingers crossed. My local game store is pretty much useless, sadly.

Dragonbane’s DNA is Basic Roleplaying. Bring out your CoC rule book. Take a look at the original play testing group credits. One (Fred Malmberg) of the founders of ”Äventyrsspel” (Adventure games, creators of “Drakar och Demoner”) is in the list.

I bought my copy earlier this year. I felt I should have it, as CoC is my favorite RPG, but also because it's such a landmark in the evolution of RPGs. That it is highly relevant 40+ years later is a testament to what a robust system it is.

I can't believe you missed great one from the 80s...Big Trouble in Little China. It would fit perfectly with the setting, the sction, the magic, the martial arts, and even the plot. Just chsnge the time period from the 80s to 1920s or 1930s San Francisco Chinatown. Then you could even add another element, the Triads/Tongs. The book The Gangs of New York has a chapter or two about the Triads/Tong wars from the late 1800s through the 1930s. The Hop Sings and the On Leongs both had chapers in both New York's and San Francisco's Chinatowns. Those groups could be used as added mooks or red herrings for the major villian.

I also love setting CoC adventures in my area (Dallas); players often comment on how much more "real" the setting feels when I am able to incorporate actual places and little bits that reflect what life is really like in a given area.

Confirming that Call of Cthulhu 7e (and some of the newer scenarios & campaigns) directly address the issue about missing core clues. That said, I have ToC and quite a few supplements for them, and I've run them with Cthulhu Dark and CoC. At some point, I want to get ToC itself to the table, to be honest. Also, yeah, ToC is under work but not sure when it will be out.

Oh nice, East of West! Been meaning to check that out myself for a while now. Hickman is one of the best writers around. I actually haven't read much of his creator owned stuff (only The Nightly News and The Manhattan Projects). But yeah, his stuff at Marvel is incredible. His runs on FF (Fantastic Four and then Future Foundation), Avengers/New Avengers, and X-Men are all excellent. And now he is killing it on Ultimate Spider-Man.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about his work for Marvel. I think this is the only thing I've read from him. I have the first volume of Manhattan Projects somewhere on the shelves, but haven't read it. As far as I've read (volume 4, I think), East of West is awesome. It's been so long, though, I'm going to have to go back to the beginning.
