How To Use A Cheap Media Player to Level Up Your Stage Show
Man, I was dead set on the QC. Now I’m sold on the FM9
I received the firefly madcat tele....alot of fret "sizzle" even when the neck was adjusted to flat....no un-levelled frets when I checked with stewmac rocker? Just had to raise the bridge the lower strings 4-6 to 2.0 on my action gauge from music nomad....not as pleased as I was with my donner dst 400 much better than this...like you no response from firefly..it's a budget guitar with great wood and looks but budget action which I will learn how to do adjustments 😂🎉 still... not the reputation I heard of
Great job man, multiple amps on stage had to be difficult.
...made in Mexico.....
Eart arent even close to fender. The eart pick ups are shit.
Nice rig, and clever fix on the D6 clip! I have a sneaking suspicion that the "clipping" you're referring to in the CDLs is actually a full power cycle of the box (or protect mode) being caused by low voltage. I'm willing to bet that the outlets you have the PA plugged into are either very far from the breaker panel, or they have long extension cords plugged into them to get power to the stage (or a combination of the two). Long power runs will meter just fine without a load, but once a load (in this case, speaker at high volume) is applied, the voltage will sag and cause the speaker to shut down/mute its output. You can confirm this by metering the voltage while a speaker is on and at high volume. You could also use a circuit analyzer that will measure the impedance of the conductors to predict the voltage drop at various load levels - I have an Ideal 61-164 analyzer, but Klein recently released one that appears to be more affordable (RT390). If that turns out to be the issue, lower gauge extension cords (10AWG) will help you avoid the voltage drop, or sourcing different power from the venue may be a solution as well. I have a 50a distribution box I bring to some shows, and I've had some venues install a 50a/250v receptacle. Even if I don't need a full 100a at 120v, my cabling for the distro is 6AWG, which is able to tolerate the 20-40a required by my full system over a greater distance without worrying about the same sort of ill effects voltage drop would bring with even a 10AWG cord of the same distance.
Wow, I hadn't even considered it could be a power issue. Thanks so much for the detailed response, I really appreciate it. I'll definitely look into that!
Do you think your two presonus cdl12p's could cover this same event? With the other subs you have?
I've used my CDL speakers and 4 QSCs at that venue before. While I couldn't match the output power of the RCF system, my rig still sounded great in that space.
@@DustinRadtke Thanks, do you really need 4 subs for that setup?
Um, yeah. Why the fuck would you pay $300 extra dollars for something that isn't perfect from the factory. The nut should be cut correctly. The frets should be perfect. An instrument should come perfect from the factory. I realize that's not always the case. But I am not accepting anything other than perfect when I put $3,000 + on a new guitar. I am not paying $300 extra to have someone "fix" a brand new guitar that should be perfect. Industry standards from every manufacturer has fallen so low. Retailers should be demanding higher quality from the manufacturers. So they aren't shipping out shit to their customers. Granted I would never... NEVER purchase a guitar I haven't put my hands on first.
I wish there were more stores in my area that carried the gear I want. They might have the guitar I like, but not the color, or sometimes they don't even have it in stock, so I end up ordering online. At least the return policy has been easy. It's a hassle to drop it off, but at least I don't lose money.
Couple things of concern. The downstage truss only resting on one of the forks… Also, the line array are splayed to only truly cover about 60 feet away from The stage. Thirdly, that power distro pulls in two phases of 120v on two separate legs. There’s no transformer actually stepping down to 120v. Finally, those lifts are not kosher for lifting PA and trussing. They look like material lifts, not line array lifts…
Thanks for the feedback! I wasn’t responsible for the setup, but I’ll definitely pass your concerns along to the right people. What would you do differently?
@@DustinRadtke obtain the proper front loading lifts for line array/trussing. And the span of trussing should at least be resting on both forks each side.
Your monitor is 24 inch ? Thank you !
Yep, 24"
Thank you ! God bless you!
So instead of looking down at the iPad you're looking down at the wedge. FAIL.
Totally! If a singer just stares at it the whole time, it definitely loses its purpose. But with the larger screen, you can see it from farther away and just glance when needed. Plus, it's great because it doesn’t block the audience's view of you.
Thank you so much this helper me a lot!!!
Great video! Mixing in style👍
Thanks! I try to have fun with it.
Unfortunate that seems kind of unfortunate that this happened
Dude love your content, you need to invest in a bigger trailer. You can see mine in my videos. Were sending out our cdl12p boxes for events soon.
When I'm making Dream Entertainment money I'll upgrade! :) I'm not sure I could pull larger one with my Highlander, but a 6x10 would be nice.
Thank you for sharing. I need this solution for my crawl space lighting.
Wow, cool idea!
If you are running a quad cortex....why even waste your time with this fm9?
because the fm9 kicks quad cortex ass 😂
I love using the Quad Cortex, but I like the tone I get from the fractal products more. Both are great units though!
I got the john 5 firefly copy and had a weird buzzy sound initially. I could not adjust it out. I wound up putting a new set of strings on it and viola the buzz went away. it came with seriously crappy strings
Brother, a setup and fret leveling/polishing might cost $125 if you don’t know how to do it yourself. Add that to the $200 price of the guitar, and you end up with a nice playing instrument, flamed maple neck, SS frets, locking tuners for $325??? That’s a screaming bargain. I’m not sure what you think a $200 guitar should be, but that damned neck alone is worth more than $200. Try fining a famed maple neck with SS frets for $200. You’re not going to find one.
I totally get where you're coming from, and I don't disagree about the value you’re getting at that price point. My issue was more about the fact that so many people paid the same price and got a perfect guitar, while mine had significant issues. So, my expectations were set pretty high based on all the positive reviews. I know what a good deal it can be, but when mine didn’t live up to that, it was a bit of a letdown.
I just got a new strat (Player II) the other day from Sweetwater. I didn't get it Plek'd, and I have been wondering if I should have. Out of the box, significant buzz on the open D string, and lots of buzz on the low E on 5-7. Intonation at 12th fret was sharp well over 5 cents on every string. Kind of a mess. If you read the "55 point inspection" literature on the website, it says the specifically check for these things. I generally like Sweetwater, but I think they vastly overhype some of this stuff (Plek - judging by your video, and the 55 point inspection, judging by my experience). I really see no reason to buy from Sweetwater versus any other company. I'll just go where the best deal is, from here on out. As to my guitar, I decided to keep it. I got it professionally set up with a bone nut, and it's much better. Still some very slight buzz on the low E at around 7th fret if I play a bit vigorously (more so on upstrokes, for some reason), but livable.
I hate buzz on the Low E. Depending how on bad it is, I'll bring the action up to where it gets rid of it. That makes it not play as nice, but saves my sanity. :)
Nice set up! May i ask what specific lights are u running over the band? Looks good and bright. Thanks!
It's a odd light that I use for front lights, its the Chauvet DJ Wash FX Hex. I like that it has amber in it.
@@DustinRadtke many thanks. yes the amber is perfect for front lighting the stage
Were 2 CDL's and a single sub on each side powerful enough, because in the video they sounded a little underpowered.
It was for what the venue wanted. I think the CDL’s clarity makes the bass seem softer in the video than it was in real life. With the band so close to the tables, I didn’t want to blast them with a wall of sound. The venue owners praised the sound several times because people could eat, talk, and enjoy the show. Next time, though, I’d probably add the extra subs. Just the like extra CDL, they would fill the sound a just a bit more without adding a ton of volume.
@@DustinRadtke Thanks, do yoyu think this setup would still work for a larger event?
Atleast you didn't have to E-Tape that D6. I like the Velcro idea. haha
I was actually panicked for a bit,. You'd think I'd have tape of some sort but I didn't. I got lucky. :) Someday I'll have a gig where it all goes as planned!
I have 12 Cdl12p speakers. Make sure you are tuning your crossover between 18khz and 100hz and adjust the gain on each box to +2. You’ll be surprised how loud these things get. This gets the speakers really loud without the clipping effect.
That's a good idea and I tried that on another gig and was able to get a little more volume. I also tried them set to +4 and the mains out mixer at -5, but they still shut down off and on. I probably have some eq making something push too hard. I’m thinking about setting a limiter on the mains to see if that helps. I do like how they sound, and the price was great
Yea the crossover needs to be set to the speaker parameters. Most crossovers go up to 20khz. The boxes only can handle 18khz hence the limit. Set your crossover and it should help get these way louder and crisper for you
I used to think it was limiting due to only the low end but it also clips on higher end frequencies too
Charging $300 for a set-up when most local shops charge less than $50 is ridiculous on Sweetwater’s end.
And age. Memory . And just not liking the song. I'm bad at remembering lyrics to songs I don't care for. My bad. But.
It's nice to fall back on, but it is super easy to get locked into the screen.
Beautiful red!
It really is! I really liked the color. I think I might find one with a rosewood neck. I haven't had one of those in a while!
With all that's been said, I always buy guitars that I can hold in my beginner playing hands so I can see, smell, feel, and play. If I like it, I buy it. If not, I move on. I personally would never buy a guitar that has to be shipped across the country. There is too much that can happen (as you have already stated), not to mention the weather. I have a great luthier locally, but, I am thinking about (as some has mentioned) buying the tools and learning to setup my own guitars. One must realize, all guitars will need some sort of adjustment at times. That is a fact. Thank you all for your comments. With an open mind you can learn a great deal! Peace! ☮
After this issue, I bought the tools to do it myself. While I can't do it flawlessly, it still made my terrible Firefly telecast play like a dream.
People that always want something perfect is impossible no instrument will ever be perfect there will always be something that isnt right for being realistic
Im trying to duplicate this build. But my airturn bt500 /s4 isn't cooperating. What settings did you configure?
Honestly sometimes this is a pain! If we switch iPads or someone changes the Settings on the Airturn it can be a challenge. I know there is more than one way to do it. Power up the Airturn Make sure it's in mode 2 (keyboard mode for page turning). My singer did not set it up like this but for some reason still works with his iPad. Set up in BandHelper: Open BandHelper and go to Settings > App Control > Set Up Airdirect AirTurn. Then turn it on AirTurn Support and added your unit Then in App Control there is a section called Actions. In there I set Up arrow, Right Arrow,Down Arrow, and Left arrow for previous, next songs, etc I hope you get it. It works great once set up.
Ive never seen anyone put on work gloves to unbox a guitar..😂
I meant to mention this in the video. My hands are always really dry, which is both a blessing and a curse! Boxes can be slippery for me, but at least my handshakes are never clammy. :)
I wear them for this. The cardboard is dusty and my hands are very dry. I also work around quicklime, alum and soda ash and I learned from multiple rashes to just wear gloves. Guitar players should care for their hands.
Hdl 10’s 🔥🔥🔥💪🏼💪🏼 I Still haven’t had the chance to test out those 8008’s but they look like they pack a punch!
They have a really tight sound. It does help running 4 though.
@@DustinRadtkeawesome thanks for the reply!
Great video. How did you get the lyrics in portrait mode? Mine will only work in landscape mode.
Thanks! I have a couple shorts on possible fixes, but this one is probably your issue. th-cam.com/users/shorts189tMknq1Mk
@DustinRadtke thanks so much for this information!! I will try this when I am infront of my unit! Fingers crossed. Thanks for your time!
Do you still like HDL10? For how many people is 3 per side enough according to your criteria? We have recently ordered 4 HDL10
I really like them. They’re super bright but also really clear. One of the bands even said it was the best they’ve ever sounded and asked if that could take us on tour with them! :) As for numbers, I haven’t used them for anything massive yet. Running 3 per side was loud, and I’m pretty sure they had more headroom. You’d need to test them out first, and if you have to push them too hard, consider adding another box per side. Another guy locally ran 4 per side and did 2k people easy.
@@DustinRadtke Thanks for your feedback mate!
Love it man, great work!
Thanks! I really appreciate it. I watched your trailer talk video recently, a lot of good info!
@@DustinRadtke 🙌
Was ein Gelaber....
PA sound good! Looks like a fun gig.
Hey, thanks! That one was a challenge, but I learned a lot from it. Your intro on your lighting video was really well done, it definitely makes me want to step up my game!
@@DustinRadtke I wanted to step up my game. Now I just hate editing.
LoL, Preach!
Gosh, when I was first starting out to play Guitar, in the mid 1970's, I just had to have a Brand Name Guitar. Gibson or Fender. I couldn't afford either Brand, but I sure wanted one. Then when I could afford one, I did purchase a nice American made Fender Strat along with a Fender Precision Bass. <Slight laugh> Only to discover my Fender Branded gear impressed no one but other Fender Fans. Gibson fans could care less, and the folks in the crowd just wanted good music regardless of the Brand of gear. Which taught me to just buy the gear I like even if it is some No Name Brand few would recognize. I bought a very nice Ibanez from the late 1970's and it is an incredible High Quality Guitar, and I still have it to this day, and it is my all time favorite guitar. Go figure!
I used to be the same way, only wanting certain brands. But you're right, the crowd couldn’t care less. They just want good music and a fun time! Ibanez makes some really good guitars.
Plek is scam. Never do that . 300 is just donation.
I really do think if you get a good tech that the Plek can make just about any guitar play amazing.
Which model is that? How much does it weigh?
I have played for years and even though I do not play country cowboy, I believe if I had to be cornered to one electric guitar....no doubt by my wife.....It would be a tele. I do not believe what the headstock says matters as much as what the guitar says to my soul. Doesn't matter who played it. I am not going to sound like Brad Paisely or Roy Buchanan even if I had the signature model. I thank you for speaking intelligently and not playing ever riff I have ever learned throughout the video. It is a sign you are a gigging musician and not a basement blaster. Peace in all you do. Kenny
Totally get where you’re coming from! I agree it is all how it feels in your hands and what it inspires in you. Really appreciate the kind words, and I’m glad the video came across that way!
Given the price, I'd budget in a pro setup then pass judgement if it's hot or not.
Yeah, this one was really bad out of the box. But my friend's was perfect from the start. Maybe I’ll try another one and see if I just got unlucky
Looks like fun!
I love playing at parties because everyone is there to have a good time, and it’s always a blast!
working with rcf since the 70's...the best speakers ever made 👌
My experience with RCF is pretty limited, but I will say so far, I'm impressed.
Do you think one CDL12 on each side would have also been fine for this show?
No, the CDLs sound great, but they’re seriously underpowered. If you push them too much, they’ll literally cut out for a few seconds. The only reason I got away with using just four was because I had the K12s as center fills. Don’t get me wrong-they sound awesome, but you just can’t push them too hard. I don't know if it is the limits of the speaker or the limits they place in the amps.
A little over a month ago I got a Firefly FF338(like a ES335) in gloss black with red binding (Ive heard several people say it looks like the color palate of the Batmobile). Outside of needing the local guitar tech to deal with the neck to stop some moderate fret buzz on the A and E its been great. He didnt even charge me for it. 10 minutes of work and it plays great. Never had any desire for a semi-hollow guitar with humbuckers but the guitar is a really fun to play. I think it has a 14" radius neck( the guy who did the neck said 20". Dont know if was joking. possible?), very flat , moderately chunky, and so much easier to play than my 9.5" Fenders. $219bucks with shipping. And if I didn't like it I can resell it for a small profit on reverb since its a limited run and people are already selling them for $350. I've no plan to sell it. Its a fun, good, maybe better than good sounding guitar. A little to goth metal looking for my taste but $219!
I thought about picking up the one that looks like Dave Grohl’s guitar, but I missed out. I’m sure it’ll come around again. I’ve never played a 335-style guitar, but they always sound great in videos.
Does it stay in place?
For sure! The screws keep it locked in place and the pressure from the pickguard on the body keeps it snug.
I bought an $8k guitar from them. Everything was perfect except one of the necks was out of spec. I did the setup and found there was a general buzz. Their 55-point inspection seems garbage.
That would be frustrating. If I'm spending that much on a guitar it should come perfect.
Plek should be coming from the factory.
I concur 100%. This service to make a brand new guitar play right stinks from several angles. The builder can offload QC problems and the retailer gets another sale. Good for everybody but the buyer.
I use Sweetwater to chat with the "experts" and then go find a better price somewhere else. I let them do all the work and let someone else give me a better deal 😂
A lot of the time, they’re fellow musicians, so If someone puts in the work, I’ll shop with them. Unless there’s a crazy deal somewhere else, but even then, I’ll check if they can match it.
