I have a straightforward goal:
Create tracking setups where you never have to ask again if this drop is because of a tracking error or real business impact.
We love event data.
We love to track products, subscriptions, purchases, content, processes, flows, and ads. But not simply users - come on, we can do better.
We love correct data, always present in the right and defined shapes.
We love to create tracking plans, help with the implementation, and make your data visible.
We love to be tool agnostic: Adobe Analytics, Amplitude, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Heap, Jitsu, Mixpanel, Rudderstack, Segment, Snowplow Analytics - to name a few of them. And we know them not just by name but from every single doc page.

Your videos are amazing. I really like it. I am a new subscriber to your channel. Can I talk with you TImo?
You have to stop. The more I dig down into your Channel, the more I realize that I know nothing About Analytics. First, the Activity Schema, and now this?
It's a very broad field nowadays.
@@timodechau Any ideas on how to reclaim my ego? I barely scratched the surface. I also noticed that the host mentioned implementing it beyond just B2B. Any suggestions on where to find other models?
@@MO3az-hw9qy I have some live videos on this channel where I do metric trees for specific features and for e-commerce.
I can't express how much I've benefited from this experience. Although I’m still new to it, my next step is to implement the strategy in Google Tag Manager. I'm trying to understand what a typical workflow looks like and what the analytical setup entails as part of the end-to-end process.
Awesome! GTM is a good abstraction layer for the implementation. But it is not a must, you can also send events directly into GA4.
@@timodechau Thank you for your response; I really appreciate it. I just wanted to confirm-when setting up an analytics system, isn't configuring events in GTM a key part of the process? For instance, defining what qualifies as a conversion and ensuring it is properly tracked?
@@MO3az-hw9qy Yes, this is part of it. What I wanted to point out is that you don't need GTM for it. In the end, you just send a JS request, and you can do it from anywhere.
Thank you for sharing and explaining your process. What advise would you give for a person who just graduated in Data Science And AI and is planning to open a data consultant company?, while i don't really have industry experience.
Tough one - it definitely helps if you have done practical work before. I won't say it is impossible. One take would be to go really deep on a specific topic, produce content around it and then target clients who have this problem.
Great video and great feature ! Do you know the cost of it ?
Well done Timo! great video
Thanks!
Do most of your data projects have some sort of data dashboard output? How have you solved automating data ingestion / updating on a dashboard? Is that something you do manually or need to have setup ahead of time or are you expected to use the companies internal tools like Tableau, rshiny etc
Depends. I would say today, 85% have dashboards because I include them to make the value more visible. In the past, I often avoided them. I always work with automated and orchestrated pipelines. I usually use Keboola for it.
Great resource, thank you!
What’s the biggest challenge you face in understanding Mixpanel?
What’s one thing you wish you knew earlier about creating effective tracking plans?
How do you currently use segments to improve your marketing? Any specific strategies that have worked well for you?
Which analytics tool do you rely on most-GA4 or Amplitude? Why?
What’s your biggest challenge with tracking metrics-understanding user behavior, setting up dashboards, or something else?
High-quality content, as always. ✨📚
Thanks!
Can mixpanel be deleted from Android phone?
Depends on what you mean with deleted? Can it be blocked? Yes, with some effort. Can you remove it from your app? Yes, just remove the package.
I would not say this is ALL about Segments. Ima developer here to learn how to make this work, and there is none of that. So maybe the title should be...This is a general cursory, non technical overview of Segment. 🙏
Fair point. I will put it on my list to create a video like "All the things you need to know about Segment as a developer".
Dude. I have been trying to understand mixpanel for sometime, your built up was amazing, gives much clarify.
That is great. Thanks!
Thanx alot i watched the th lecture and really enjoyed it
Awsome class, thank you for sharing it!
Very informative! Thank you for this valuable content. By the way, do you have any courses (paid or free) that bridge the gap between analytics engineering and product analytics?
Unfortunately not. But I was thinking about it since some more people have asked. The best resource I can recommend is Olga's Substack: dataanalysis.substack.com
You know what? I am a regular viewer of your TH-cam Channel. I have seen all your videos and your content qualities are very good. I learned lots of things from you. Your channel has great quality contents but still it is not delivering its right audiences due to SEO problems. You should focus on your SEO so that You can get a big fanbase, Thanks.
Is Amplitude also event based as GA4?
Yes, you can also get pageviews out of the box, but Amplitude's foundation is events.
@@timodechau Isn't a pageview a type of event? 🙃
It is, but when you come from GA, it feels different.
4 minutes in and my mind is blown!
Hi Timo, it would be great to have a link to the pdf from the presentation! Thank you for the conference- it’s awesome blast!
Hi Timo, thanks for the update. I'm wondering why Mixpanel hasn't released this as an additional type of user property, which could be updated directly from the app. Something like mixpanel.getPeople().set(name, value) but with a default option for collecting historical data, so that the user property wouldn't be overwritten during an update. In this case, the update date would also define the period from when a given value applies in the historical data. It seems that user properties in Amplitude aren't overwritten by default, but rather their changes are reflected in the graphs.
Real meat! Thanks a lot Timo for sharing this ❤ one question, we already send our product analytics data to mixapnel through segment CDP, would mixpanel correctly merge identities? for new and existing users? if yes, curious to know, how will that happen?
It depends how you use Segment. If you use the identify call it should correctly stitch identities. But you can check the user informations in the user sections to see if users can have different ids and are still merged.
Oh no, I just missed the live event by a hair.
I hope the replay is still ok. I try to stick to the same time every week.
Just explain it buddy
😁 - sorry. It needs the build up.
great points and love the honesty of your presentation
Thanks!
Hey Timo, do you have any suggestions for Dataset to practice product analytics regarding the users engagement and behaviors in app or product!?
That is a good question. There is the Amplitude Demo Account: analytics.amplitude.com/demo That's all I know. But maybe it would be a good idea if I could create some demo setups. I have an event data simulator, so I can build any dataset.
@@timodechau thank you for your response. I'm a Data Analyst eager to transition into a Product Analytics and Customer Journey focused Analytics Engineer role. I've noticed your extensive use of dbt in your video, which is impressive. I've already started taking courses on it. Could you please share your recommendations for my next steps? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
It's not that easy to answer. Tooling and data model/prep are two parts of the job. The more essential part is understanding how to help a product team. This includes more knowledge about how product and product teams work. Maybe it is a good idea for a post that I should write.
@@timodechau Really appreciate that you replied also can't wait for that ♥️, BTW I built a simulator to practice the product analytics it simulate a streaming service ( Netflix) with All it's compents ut generate users Data, videos Wich is a part of a series, also i made marketing campaigns budget and social Media interaction to practice CLTV and CAC and of course users traffic Data on the platform to monitor users behavioral patterns I don't know why TH-cam doesn't allow me to post the GitHub repository link here Is there any way to send the link for you!?
Brilliant ❤
Excellent video! if you are able to train the product team to use these tools properly and on their own that is amazing. usually they want the data team to build them the whole thing from A-Z.
And this never can scale. And truth be told, they are the experts in their domain. They have so much background knowledge and will unlock much better insights.
Just want to say thank you ❤ BTW you deliver a high value content, So don't get bother by The number of subscribers or watch count, wish All the Best ❤❤
Thank you so much. Yes, you won't be famous with this kind of content. But that's what I like and I am so glad it helped you.
Hey man loved your explanation ❤❤ Need a further reading or anything that goes in depth Any suggestions??😅
Unfortunately, not really. This is a good post: substack.com/home/post/p-143579364 and this one too: www.leverslabs.com/article/introducing-metric-trees But I am planning to run a weekly live format where I create metric trees - so keep your eyes out for it. Potentially I will start in August
wow!! you just made a great job thatnk you for your amazing efforts i was trying to find any information about how to make comprehensive dashboard by using mixpanel reflecting the ad spend and you really made easy to understand how to do it so i tried to implement it but found new issue which is the UTM source gives me not set on mixpanel any trying to see solution for this issue thank you again for your efforts and truly appreciate it
Excellent. The docs are a bit vague, and I had to talk to Mixpanel directly to check out some things.
Hello! Thanks for sharing. What were the main services you offered to get your first clients? Is there a specific niche you would recommend?
I basically did everything as a first project. This was helpful to also get an idea of how these different projects work, which ones are more risky, and which I like to do. I will keep this experimentation until today.
@@timodechau I already do some consulting, but I have trouble finding the types of clients that will generate enough value through analytics for them to pay what I'd like. Currently I offer building a simple but complete data infrastructure ELT with data pipelines, a data warehouse, dbt and any BI tool. What would you recommend me to reach more companies that could benefit from that? I'm in Mexico by the way, but I could sell remotely in the US or Europe if need be.
Hey Timo great video! Had a doubt or wanted a confirmation actually for User Properties Let's say I don't connect to DW Question : For a product, let's say I want to get amount spend in SF in last 1 year by users. There is a User123 who spent some time in SF (6 months) and in California in the next 6 months. Now, the location variable will be updated. Ideally if I take 1 year time duration, this will lead to all amount being allocated to California. Or if i calculated number of user X city, then this User123 should be counted in both but as per Mixpanel's implementation this would be counted in California right? (Want to confirm on this understanding :) ) I know I can pass location as event property with amount as a solution. The reason I said no DW. Cause this requires good data at the source or at my end and we have identified some issues with it which will take some sweet time to resolve : (. Also good edits, zooming etc on a couple of elements + great explanation with the diagrams!
When I got your scenario right, I would solve it with events only, like a purchase event with the amount and the state providing the properties. This should get you the right calculation. It could also been done with user properties, but it would be not really efficient to do so.
What tools did you use to record this video?
Screen Studio does most of the magic!
Hi, Timo. If you don't mind, could you increase the volume of the next videos a little? :)❣
Thanks for the feedback - I need to check why it was like this.
Amazing video Timo! would love to see more content like this

Thank you very much for your explanation of the difference between the star schema and the event schema. As a BI practitioner, I use the star schema almost all the time, and I wasn't so sure about the second one. Is there a resource you can recommend to learn more about the Event Schema and Event analytics in general?
There are not many. www.activityschema.com is a good start. I have some other videos that touch on these topics as well.
Thanks for the video! It's useful 👍
Glad to hear that!
Good video! Could you please complete the video though? I am able to initiate all the required instances but not able to move forward from there sadly.

Great video as always!
Thanks! Let me know if you have any whishes for future videos.

What tools did you use as you provided data consultancy or management service? How did you get your first customers? Thank you for the video
Concerning tools - it always depends on the project. Usually from a long list of data tools. First clients - Network. I told friends about my new services and asked them to look out for potential clients. By that, I got my first two projects.
I can't believe we have already reached our final episode :( . I am learning a lot from this series Timo. Thank you very much for your content!
Thanks! Let me know what you would like to see in the next video.
@@timodechau Your welcome! I am starting to use Mixpanel for a new project and your videos helped me a lot. I come from the BI world, mostly using Power BI. How would you face a project like the one you just showed using a BI tool instead of a tool like Mixpanel or Amplitude? Does it make sense to use another tool for reporting and visualization? It is not that I don't like Mixpanel, but it lacks in the board side.
Any BI tool would do if you only want to report on the metrics and how they change over time. But if you want to understand the correlation between specific user behavior and subscription revenue you need a tool like Mixpanel.
@@timodechau I am starting to get that feeling! Have you ever experimented with tree-based machine learning models to predict metrics, like MRR, only to find that the most significant connections are in the lower branches of the metric tree? For example, by using Shap values and models like Random Forest or XGBoost to uncover deeper insights.
No - but this sounds extremely interesting. Did you do something like this?
Awesome! Thx! ❤
