Summary
In this episode, Mark interviews artist TJ Cunningham about his artistic journey. TJ shares how his passion for art began at a young age, with a pivotal moment being the sale of a sculpture at a diner that inspired him to pursue an art career. He discusses his college art studies, challenges faced in the art world, and his decision to leave galleries to build direct relationships with customers. Emphasizing the importance of treating customers like friends, TJ details his daily routine and creative process, highlighting plein air studies, Photoshop use, and the significance of strong design and accurate values in his realistic landscape paintings.
TJ also talks about his mentors, teaching experiences, and the online community he created called The Art Journey. He underscores the value of learning from others, maintaining routines, and balancing family life with painting. Mark and TJ discuss how teaching adds meaning to their work and its financial benefits. They address the importance of connecting with other artists and offer advice to beginners: read business books, develop your craft, and recognize that painting requires hard work and practice. Focus on creating great work, continuously learning, and marketing your art without relying solely on galleries.

    I just recently came across you podcasts and have really enjoyed getting to know you and the artists you interview...I've recommended your podcast to many of my students and fellow artists. I know Tim and and his dedication and desire to be the best artist, husband, and dad is, in part, his tireless motivation work at it each day. I remember when he was a student and when the day in the school studio was finished and the rooms became empty since everyone else was heading to supper and he would be the only one left working. That Tim and that was his daily routine for him. That always impressed me how he was willing to give up socializing around campus and having fun to get that valuable extra time in. I hope these interviews continue to grow and inspire others.

    In regards to finding the right galleries. Do you look for one man show galleries or galleries that feature many different type of artists?

    • @thebusinessof_art
      @thebusinessof_art 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I typically look for multi-artist galleries… but can’t hurt to approach them if you feel it might be a good fit

  • @UncleRabbit1
    @UncleRabbit1 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Just out of curiosity; for these print sights like fineartamerica people can easily cut and paste your artwork and print it for themselves for free. Consider it like online piracy. How do we prevent that?

    • @thebusinessof_art
      @thebusinessof_art 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think that will rarely happen… the quality would be much lower than paying for a print. I think it’s worth any of that minimal risk.

    Hey isn't there any possibility that AI has/will be ruining the artist society.

    • @thebusinessof_art
      @thebusinessof_art 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good question! I think AI is definitely changing the artistic landscape for sure. When it comes to fine art, physical paint with real textures and the human element, I think there will always be an appreciation and market for it. --The impact of AI is yet to be seen though... I don't know how anyone can really predict how it will ultimately change or affect the art world.

    If the content poster is still checking the comments, I have a question. You mentioned you use birch boards. I guess you use the same process? I'd like to use the grain of the wood in my work so I bought Liquitex Clear Gesso. Does that also need to be sanded and multiple layers put on before I use paint on the wood? Is it just oils that affect the surfaces that way or can I get away with less gesso with acrylics used as stains? Thanks for any reply.

    • @thebusinessof_art
      @thebusinessof_art 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’ve never used the clear gesso, I would definitely try to follow any directions you see on the product labeling, and I would definitely err on the side of too many coats rather than not enough. Sorry I’m not more help here.
