Just a fun little project. I doubt it will end up on my bike permanently, but I think it should keep me occupied for a few days. Here's the code. github.com/codeDirtyToMe/DIYGearIndicator

I wanted to see how well this camera would work for macro shots. It doesn't really work all that well for close focus, but its small size is nice for fitting into tight places.

    Hello i did something similar to this using a raspberry pi pico but i dont know how to implement it to the bike do you have any ideas? I dont really think i can place it on the gear lever

    I thought symmetrical encryption meant both parties have the same shared secret (or key), (with the problem being they have to exchange or agree on one with a listener present).

    sorry , Diffie hellman is not a symmetric ; it's an asymmetric encryption alg.

    If your bike has a neutral indicator, you could use that signal to reset the code and also it would be more convenient for you to recode the numbers as 1,0,2,3,4,5

      Yeah, tracking. This still never made it onto my bike, but if it does I would likely do that. As far as the convenience of using 0 instead of N, I think that's a non-issue. It's been more than a year since I looked at the code or this project in general, but I don't think there was ever any problem there. It's just printing a character instead of an integer. Oh, wait. This video is the first prototype where I was using an LCD. I did it again with an OLED and used a capital N. I think I have a video of that on here as well.

    Ouch. I'm that one random view you get three years after you made the video from the guy who stumbled on to your video because his laptop is thinner than your laptop ....and is too stupid to figure out how to tighten the clamps down tight enough to create a seal. Though your description may be accurate (and I, still stumped), that one time after work where as I got home and shut my house's door and in order to say hi to my excited dog who was individually 80 lb stress testing each piece of my living room furniture and without even thinking about it, I tossed my keys in my leftover taco bell bag from lunch I was bringing in to put in the fridge. They stayed lost there for 4 dreadfully-terrible days. That takes the cake. 😂 So, how the hell would you get it to attach to a thinner laptop? 😇🤣😂

    • @codedirtytome7178
      @codedirtytome7178 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those little clamps should have rubber attachments on them, right? Wrap a rubber band around them a couple times to give them a larger diameter. At least, that's what I would try. Also, if the laptop is too thin for the adapters, it may not be worth it. From what I remember, a good seal on that thing makes a big difference.

      @@codedirtytome7178 Switched me to thumbs up :) You and I were on the same idea with the seal logic.. I got some of that aluminum foil tape and molded the two devices together with shine. Lol. I did make sure when I taped that both clamps were as much towards the inside as possible because they definitely get tighter that way.

      Yeah, sorry. I've been meaning to put a link in the description for ages now. Give me one min. Ok, it's now in the description. BTW, this is an older video. I have switched over to Hall effect sensors and an OLED screen. You can find that video on here as well.

    Try using ' instead of " when providing the strings in cli. Bash handles them differently.

    I picked up a Universal Motorcycle 10000RPM LCD Digital Odometer Speedometer Tachometer Gauge and it has neutral and the 6 gear indicator but that's what I need is something like that to switch the gears could you make a video on what you used and how you set it up. I have been trying to figure it out and I can't. There is a guy that made a motorcycle universal gear indicator with would work perfect for me he list what he used but I not sure would some of the Symbols are and it needs to be explained better.

      I've actually haven't gotten around to installing it on the bike yet. Life got real busy for me (in a good way) shortly after making this video. In the mean time, you can check out the thread I had started on advrider for a lot more information including the code I wrote for this. advrider.com/f/threads/diy-gear-indicator.1359285/

      Yeah, I was actually thinking of redoing this video as I recently forgot that I unplugged it and noticed my laptop was super hot. I plugged it in and the temp read 145 F. Within seconds it was down to 120 F and worked it's way down to 110 F after about 5 mins. Frankly, it was a more impressive demonstration that would have done it better justice.
