Oh dear, after listening to it several times again over a period of just under three months and no, it doesn’t get better, it only gets worse. All noise and little genuine attempt at great depth or offering anything remotely thought provoking. Just the same old thing in a watered down version sprinkled with the same old “shock” hit-words which by now have long since lacked the ability to shock. Lackadaisical and lacklustre does not equate with inspiration. It’s just some shouting and noise and nothing of real value to be of any significance or interest to an adult mind who has the bumps, scrapes and knocks from the experience of living lifes ups and downs. Genuinely moving tales of compelling meaning and profundity are much more likely to be found from leaning over a garden fence & having a conversation with a next door neighbour than to be found in anything here on this album.

Like his others this is weak and even insipid in places. Repetition and the parodying of his own earlier material is no substitute for inspiration. So still, Mechanical Animals remains the apex and high watermark of his career. Will that genuine masterpiece ever be put into the shade by new Manson material? On this evidence sadly not, he was nowhere near doing so with this attempt but I genuinely and sincerely hope that one day he will.
