10. Terrain update

09. Bolt Action notes and a couple of new books.

Played a 1500pt game versus Richard "Dinger" Bell in my first visit to Durham Raiders. Lost the game but learned a lot about the Germans and a little about my Russians. Also got two new books, Lion Rampant and World Aflame, briefly talk about those and my plans for them.

My Russian Army, as ever, not the best paint jobs but they do... also includes how I like to use the various units and also a bit about a game i'm due to play later In the day. (I actually got beat, learned more about the Germans I was facing than I did about my own force).

Hello, my name is CJ Linton, this short video is a little about me, what games I play and what I hope to do with this channel.
French and Dutch troops look great.
I bought some Front Rank command figures for my Warlord WSS armies, they are chunkier but you may have ordered the large draught horses, as my figures fit on the horses fine.
Good intro, look forward to seeing more, especially when you get into your Naps and WSS periods.

Osprey rules are very variable but in my opinion "Lion Rampant" is their best so far and "A World Aflame" is their worst. As you are interested in VBCW it may suit you better but I am always on the lookout for a set of rules to use for the Russian Civil War and I was very disappointed. The rules all seem geared towards VBCW. You mentioned some of them but the author also seems fixated with capturing post offices as though all the fighting is going on across rural England, and as you say they are very fiddly and involve lots of record keeping for such things as ammunition expenditure. You are the first person I have known to acquire the rules other than myself and they have been out a couple of years now. They seem to have sunk without trace. On the subject of figures for c950 why don't you get Normans as these would be a close match?
Hi Ralph, thanks for viewing and commenting... you are indeed correct they have been out a little bit now and in truth I thought I was the only one to own a copy lol... As I say in the vid I won't be using the rules, even after looking into them more, much more interested in bastardising Bolt Action with a handful of special rules, Crowbars being one of them... As for Normans for my c950 era French I probably will go down that route, however not sure if the Kite Shield was in use then, its 100 years before Hastings so maybe not. Thanks again.
You might be right about the kite shield - I have just been looking at my Funcken and they don't seem to feature before c1000. So how about Gripping Beast's Carolingian figures?

Shame about the Front Rank they are some of the best cast figures out there chunky but take a brush well . Like most mounted figures I put Vallejo plastic putty around the join then smooth it out with a wet old brush . Regards Gav .
