Indigenous Bowyer | making a recurve bow
Making a hunting-weight recurve bow.
Bowmaking was passed down to me by my father and uncle. Many of the tools I used in this video are hand-me-downs. Some tools I sought out and purchased. My knowledge has been accumulated from my family, community elders, friends, archery books, museum research and online forums. Today, there aren’t many Native bowyers alive that pass on these teachings. I want to keep what I learn alive for my future generations by sharing it.

This bow (65in) is longer than our traditional chest-draw bows which were on average 50-55 inches. This is to account for my height and contemporary corner-of-the-mouth draw style. While I used osage orange, a beautiful bow wood, our traditional preference was oak because it was very accessible. This video and my craft is not intended to depict the most traditional or ancient method, but rather to showcase the way I do things today as a living Native crafter. So much of modern bowmaking is an amalgamation of styles, tools and methods from different cultures and I appreciate every one of them. Some days, I craft using no metal tools, and other days I make things using power tools.

The handle design I used in this video is JD Jones’ (of pinnacleselfbows) signature handle wrap style. He does a much better job than I did, so go check him out if you’re interested in the design.

The hard is the wood. The real deal. Even making a real bow is a lot of work. Shooting equally hard. Keep urself together and pass what u know please. I want to shoot like u one day or my son.
Handmade....hands down!
✊🏼
You going to post anymore
Hand made. Good to see you back...
Beautiful. I’ve made few also but I like watching you.
Hang on while I attach all this stuff
The absolute legend he's back
Better than any machine made bow that's for sure. 😀
Less than a minute in, and I know I am looking at a man who knows what he is doing from the DeWalt tools in frame. Kwalli, kwalli! 👍🏾💪🏾🏹

Hand made bow, hands down!
I'd have to go with the traditional bow
Attention , If ⚠️ bois très toxiques ne pas brûler , ne pas inhaler les poussières , ni la fumée !
Wood
Where have you been all this long? welcome back ❤❤❤
Solo los que tallamos arcos , así de un tronco sin forma.. Sabemos las horas que llevan.. Demasiado trabajo.. todo un dia de ocupacion. O dias. Si lo quieres pintar. Y hacer flechas😢😢
He’s back
Very cool ✨🔥💖🔥✨
The ends color is nice
Impressive work.
What type of wood is that in your video? Thanks for sharing
Blessed and fortunate to have knowledge pasted down from your elders and demonstrated through yourself
Oh my your an amazing artist 😊 such beautiful creativity and craftsmanship our ancestors are truly proud. ❤
osiyo, great work son :)
The plainer looks dull. Shouldn't work at night, Hazardous. High risk of injuries.
How about talking us through the process next time!!
I love that this is a dude making a genuine bow, that really REALLY works good and he makes it the way he feels he gets good results, he's conscious of where he comes from and where this bow style comes from and he chooses how to express it. This is the real deal.
Excellent work. Thank you for sharing.
Excelente trabajo !!! Por el color, parece osage !! No pude importarlo hacia mi país, pero si conseguí hickory !! Y estoy trabajando en ese proyecto. Ahoo !! Un abrazo de un Charrúa de Uruguay !!
Like to see the Native Americans passing down traditions. Modern people don’t realize the importance of this stuff. We live in this toxic sterile world and this is the true way people should live!
Yá'át'ééh!(Hello) can I buy one? Looking at getting into archery
Pretty much the only temptation I have to go to North America is to see the natural landscapes there. That shot at the end of you firing the bow is beautiful in every way. But apart from the nature, mad respect to you bro. Truly a master craftsman. It's incredible that the internet is allowing me to see this process from the other side of the planet.
Tiller is not very good
Ok so Bodart.
What type of wood is this?
I wish I had you as a friend. You will be my master and I will be the student. I would love to be to master bow and arrow making. Very impressive.
Thank you, for this beautiful film. Wonderful pictures, great structure and a nice bow.
A beautiful bow
So good to see the craft continue! My Great- Grandmother was half Cherokee, but I know nothing of that heritage.
This film should be in museums
Cool
That was a cool video. .. thank you for sharing ☺️. I think that the bow you made looks way kewler than any store bought bow!
Beautiful wood, I am impressed at the use of the "heat treating" method you incorporated, very skillful for such a young artisan ! Very much appreciate your work and the effort in making this video. I am a hunter by nature and have always made my own equipment. I started when I was about 8, I am now 75 and still learning, thank you so much !
Beautiful
Nice job you bow Is a piece of art
This is amazing! Thank you for sharing your amazing skills brother...
Wer so arbeitet !!!!!! das kann nichts werden......
What a beautiful bow! Thank you for sharing, this was really interesting to watch! :)
Do you have an etsy/ would you take sell/ commotion a bow? I would really like to get back into bow hunting but with a recurve bow instead of compound and being Cherokee I wanted to get something handmade rather than mass produced. Thank you so much for passing on the knowledge of our ancestor's, I wish to be as great a bowyer as you one day.
