Sydney Awards 2024: Alexia Paglia, Young Sydneysider of the Year Award winner
At 24, Alexia Paglia is a fierce advocate for children’s health education. Currently a Doctor of Medicine student at University of Wollongong, she blends her rigorous training with a passion for community service, aiming to bridge the health literacy gap in Australia.
Her work as a clinical trials researcher in oncology at UNSW led to a significant review on survivorship care for young cancer survivors, underscoring her dedication to impactful healthcare delivery.
But it’s her bestselling children’s book on heart health, "My Strong Heart," that sets her apart. Sparked by her motivation to make medical environments less intimidating for children, Alexia has used her book to facilitate free lessons at Sydney Children’s Hospital School, and host reading sessions at local libraries.

One policy that will guarantee "walkable urban" development and bring an end to sprawl is for communities to move over several years to a form of real estate taxation that exempts housing units from taxation in favor of an annual tax on the underlying parcel of land equal (or close to) its potential annual rental value. The economics of this has been understood for a very long time. What stands in the way of sound public policy is the expectation one has of being able to sell a residential property for a greater sum than its purchase price. We very easily ignore the fact that a housing unit is a depreciating asset, an asset that requires continuous maintenance and every decade or so huge expenditures for systems replacement. What this means is that every property owner is, in effect, a land speculator. We might think that speculating in land ought to be prevented, but our apparent personal interests prevent us from clearly seeing the systemic consequences. Edward J. Dodson, M.L.A.

The continent of Australia is ringed with an urban and suburban population. It is surrounded by ocean. There is no excuse for Government to ‘not’ establish desalination plants on the coast, everywhere. Piping water to the inland is not as difficult as they make out… The Government have reclaimed thousands of homes, to build motorways and highways in suburban Sydney… what is the problem in doing that for access to water? Instead Government will fund dumb fifteen minute city plans like ‘Clara’.

Great presentation and Q&A. I love Marco’s rebuttal at 1:02:01. The irony for me is that when I worked for Bicycle Network in Sydney back in 2015-16, I met with the CEO mayor and Executive at City of Campbelltown and talked to them about bike-train-bike and building a local bike network that gets people to and from their train station as well as around town. I guess the idea didn’t really sink in…

Sara Mansour is a hypocrite, she claims women should wear hijab proudly yet ignored, that in her area, Aussie women and non-Muslim women have been harassed extremely by Muslim men, who have said that non-Muslim Aussies deserve to be raped... Even before the events of the Cronulla riots Lebanese Muslims made a habit of hunting down and raping women who did not cover up. The Skaf rape gangs even targeted Aboriginal women because they view them as impure and slutty as Aussies. Never let this demon called Sara Mansour protect rapists and extremist while acting like a victim herself.

I see the bicycle being hijacked in the video at the start to imply that what is being discussed is non-threatening and good for the environment, when what is really being discussed is more of the same old car-centred conversation which maintains an unsafe and deadly environment for pedestrians, bicycle riders and other micro mobility users. Uber doesn’t want cities safer for inhabitants, it doesn’t truly want to cater to cities and their citizens, it wants cities to cater to them. Thumbs-down.👎

Very disappointed to hear the Ministers view on escooters, it seems that the vision is all about Sydney and none of it about NSW as a whole. They are no dangerous then bikes and are speed limited. The talk about policing speed limits, how do they police bicycles at present. Unfortunately there are plenty of NSW constituents that can’t ride bicycles perhaps due to physical or health reasons but can ride a escooter. If he don’t like escooters scattered like other cities then just allow laws for private owners who treat there devices and pedestrians and cars very safely.

I especially like the comments at 47:30 about the use of design minds to make healthy cities. The issue has always been attention from politicians to create budgets for it AND to stand by their choices when car-drivers (and other aligned politicians) push back against slower streets, wider sidewalks (footpaths), better and more parks or even more street trees.
