I'm from the UK and my wife is from HCMC. We plan to retire there in a few years. My wife is hard and unsympathetic and refuses to give them any money as there are tricksters out there who prey on tourists for money...even folk pretending to be monks, dressed in orange robes. I can't help but think that if every tourist chipped in five dollars each time they visited the street, we could open a free school / drop in centre / food bank, to give these folk a bit of a leg up in life.

I think it's time to clean Bui Vien Streeet up. Foreigners are not impressed by these images and I don't think the disabled and children should be doing what they are doing on here, either. The government should step in and make sure homeless children go to school, and provide more support for disabled people so they don't go wondering the streets and bother other people. Similarly the government should also renovate this entire street. It just looks like a shanty town the way it is and those plastic chairs are just awful.

Rough situation. I lived in HCMC for a year and it's heartbreaking to see the situations many of these people are born into. At the same time, as a westerner, you do really have to put your foot down and be assertive or some of them will take you for every penny you have. A rough environment growing up creates a callous heart by necessity, and it's a vicious cycle. There are solutions somewhere deep in here, but I don't know what they are. Humanizing people is ideal but can get you boned in a situation where people don't humanize you.

(23yr old White American/Mỹ trắng) I've been wanting to go to Sài Gòn for years now and i'm pretty sure 2024 is the year. From what i've heard from friends over there, Bui Vien street is the densest tourist location, I think this documentary serves more as a highlight of this specific location rather than the rest of the city. There are many poor people in the city, but there are also many decently well off middle class living in Sài Gòn.

Wow, brings it all back .

I'm always impressed by the working people: be they grifters or gum-hawkers, peanut sellers or prostitutes who can get up in the mornings, hustle in their shithole cities and still somehow have a smile on their face. Thanks for showing people around the globe what Saigon is like warts and all. I'd love to visit Vietnam one day still.

Ugh, those foreign backpackers are the worst. They only see Vietnam as the place where they can extract...cheap food/lodging/alcohol/drugs/sex, Insta pictures, stories they can tell, collecting 'experiences' like a trinket. Local people are just props to them. Also, these places also attract either the most desparate or the most cunning locals. Hope Vietnam has enough dignity not to make itself into another Thailand.
