Bikepacking from Banff to Antelope Wells on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route - 2024
This video shows highlights of my bikepacking trip on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) from Banff, Alberta, Canada to Antelope Wells, New Mexico, USA in the summer of 2024.
I rode with my son, from Banff to White Fish. I had planned to ride solo the rest of the way, to the Mexican Border. However, I fortunately shared the remainder of the ride with several fun and interesting people I met along the way.
The route goes through Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, Eureka, Whitefish, Helena, Butte, Grand Teton National Park, Pinedale, the Great Divide Basin of Wyoming, Rawlins, Steamboat Springs, Breckenridge, Salida, Del Norte, Indiana Pass, Abiquiu, Cuba, Grants, Pie Town, the Gila National Forest, Silver City and Hachita. It passes through the Canadian provinces Alberta and British Columbia, and the US states of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico.

This video shows a day-by-day account of two sixty-something guys on a 3500 mile, 50 day ride from the Apple State to the Big Apple. A third cyclist joined in for the New York State part of the trip.

A great addition to the GDMBR is to start in Jasper and ride the Icefields pkwy to Banff. It gives you more time in the Canadian Rockies which are quite spectacular. I rode the GDMBR back in the day and always enjoy these videos so I can do a little reminiscing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've heard the Icefields pkwy is very scenic. I decided to start in Banff on this ride because my son had limited vacation time and had to catch a train in Whitefish. I also would have liked to do the alternate routes in Canada. Maybe in the future I'll do the Canadian portion again and include the Icefields Pkwy and the alternate routes.

Greet video thanks mate. What time of year did you set off?

Thanks. We started on July 8th. I finished on September 9th. I had 7 days off and a few half days. This was a comfortable touring pace for me and matched well with several other riders so I could have company.

How long did it take you to complete? Did you do it all in one big push?

    • @XPartnershipProgramX

I took 64 days (57 riding plus 7 resting). This was a good touring pace for me. It allowed enough time to enjoy the sights and people and avoid overuse injuries without keeping me away from home too long. Many go at a faster pace because of time constraints or just a more competitive attitude or higher fitness level.

Thanks for watching. I spent 64 days on this trip, with 57 riding days and 7 rest days. This was a good pace for me and many of the people I rode with, allowing enough time to enjoy more than just the cycling, while avoiding overuse injuries. Some prefer a faster pace because of time limitations or just being younger, stronger or more competitive.

Great video! I recall crossing paths with Continental Divide riders from the Tetons all the way down to Hartsel CO while I was doing the TransAm. We slept behind the bar in Hartsel too. Your trip is truly inspirational. Besides all of the scenery in your video, I thought the toaster house was a nice touch.

@mennosolarquest I plan ( bucketlist) on it from the border to my place, tell folks I'm riding home. Next year, definitely stop by or spend night here camping, plenty of space just over 10 acres, it's Cr #3 Utepass MM 14.5 on left going south, top of Utepass is MM 5. TH-cam blind guy biking Chris Smith and I think video is steamboat to Breckenridge you'll see the front gate, cooler & bike decor. If you will have GPS on trackleaders shoot me your info and I'll watch for you coming, have my lady cook you up a meal. Pass the word, open to all bike riders! Cheers!
