Hiking in Saguaro National Park (East) - Grass Shack
Do you ever find yourself hiking the same trails over and over? I do. My excuse is that I'm usually preparing for an epic upcoming adventure and pick the hardest trails to repeatedly train on. But, this time, I just wanted to try a trail that I had heard about, but had never done.
We started the day early at the Loma Alta trailhead. This is just a dirt road for the most part until it intersects with Quilter Trail. Hiking through the desert full of saguaros and yellow wildflowers was absolutely beautiful!
While the trail was easy to follow, this was not an easy hike. One way was just about 10 miles and 2,800 ft of elevation gain (see Alltrails for stats). We were grateful to finally arrive at Grass Shack Campground and find the little blessings of flowing water, excellent tree shade, and a pit toilet.
This hike was a great reminder to keep seeking out new trails in my local area! Keep exploring and see you out there on any given Sunday!
Thanks!

Day Hike in Sabino Canyon
มุมมอง 27วันที่ผ่านมา
Usually, we hike to get somewhere: to the top of a mountain or the end of a trail. This hike was different. We took our time, found a shaded spot by a stream, and took a hammock nap. It was a wonderful hike!

Mt Le Conte
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
Mount Le Conte, via Alum Cave, was the first hike of my week-long hiking adventure in the Great Smoky Mountains. It was a fantastic first impression of this beautiful place! First, imagine the culture shock of flying from the Arizona desert to Tennessee. Words like “humid”, “bears”, and “waterfalls” popped up often my research but left me unprepared for the breathtaking beauty of the Great Smok...
Hen Wallow Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains
มุมมอง 352 ปีที่แล้ว
Hen Wallow Falls is worth the 4.4 mile round trip hike. This is a 90 foot high waterfall that is very narrow at the top and fans out to 20 feet in width at the base. To get there, park in the designated hiker parting spots at the Cosby Picnic Area and backtrack just a little to the Gabes Mountain trailhead (it’s across the street). Stay on the Gabes Mountain trail for most of the trail until yo...

Great Smoky Mountains - Ramsey Cascades
มุมมอง 9492 ปีที่แล้ว
Join me for a week of hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Today, we hiked to Ramsey Cascades - a moderate-to-hard hike at 8.1 miles roundtrip and 2,200 feet elevation gain. Just getting to the trailhead is a scenic journey of narrow roads and wooden bridges through some of the greenest, lushest forest landscape I’ve ever seen. The trail starts off gradual on an old gravel road. A...

มุมมอง 842 ปีที่แล้ว
Join us as we experience the breathtaking 360 views of Weaver’s Needle on the Weaver’s Needle Loop! Weaver’s Needle is one of the most recognizable peaks in the Superstition Mountains. To get there from Tucson, it’s a quick 90-mile trip up AZ-79 through Florence. After turning on Peralta Rd, it’s roughly 7 miles to the Peralta Trailhead (4 miles are on a dirt road). Get to the trailhead early, ...
Hiking in the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness

Join us as we slosh through miles of water in the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness! A permit is required for any type of hiking and/or camping in Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness - and getting a permit for the West Entrance is challenging! What we did not do was our usual pre-hike research. We did not check the weather (forecast: rain), we did not check the road (last several miles are an unpaved, winding ...
Boulder Canyon Trail

We picked the Boulder Canyon Trail as our 5th Annual New Year’s Day hike and, wow, what a fantastic trail we chose! It almost didn’t happen because it was pouring on our drive up. But, after witnessing beautiful clouds over the Superstitions, the clouds cleared and it ended up being a beautiful winter day in the desert. Pre-hike research helped us understand where to park (at the back row of th...

We are back in Madera Canyon this year to train for another upcoming epic hike: the Grand Canyon!!! Today’s hike was just to the Old Baldy Saddle, a 9 mile round trip with 3,300 feet of elevation gain. Nothing beats that first peek of the saddle after several intense switchbacks!!! Thanks to all of the recent rain, today’s hike was through beautiful greenery with lots of different flowers! Anot...

Wow that is neat! The early-early morning shots are unusual, and the sense of looking out over the valley is great. The fire damage is bad but at least the little grass shoots are coming up...it will be many years before the cacti regain their pre-fire size. Thanks for putting this together!
