Z Scale 45 Tonner, MDT and Shay Locomotives
I built some Z scale locomotives and I'm running them on the test tracks. First is the 45 Tonner using a special 12 volt motor and Rokuhan Shorty parts. After that, there are two locomotives using the Showcase Miniatures Power Tuck. One is the Plymouth MDT and other is a Shay locomotive. The Showcase Miniatures power truck is quite powerful for such a small size. It runs very smooth, too.

Z Scale Shay On Test Track

This is a brass z scale Shay locomotive. The main body was designed by Walter Smith. The chassis and motor mount were designed by me. The brass parts were 3D printed at Shapeways. This little loco did not like the super sharp turns of my micro test track. Since my switching layout does not allow for continuous running, I pulled a framed picture off the wall and set up a test track on the back o...

Z Scale Super Portable Micro Test Track
มุมมอง 8693 ปีที่แล้ว
I made a Z Scale micro test track to break in the locomotives I build. Now I can keep an eye on the loco's performance while working in the home office. The track sections are Rokuhan 95mm radius curves and regular 110mm straight track. A BlueLine Snail Speed Controller has been modified to be powered by a separate battery pack that sits below the surface.

    Can you fit MTL couplers to your engines?

    • @thezmaker1611
      @thezmaker1611 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the majority of my designs can fit them. Only the 70 Tonner and 44 Tonner are too small for MTL’s coupler box.

  • @triplicator

    Wait a minute, isn't that a plastic chassis with one bogie driven? Given the lack of room in that body for weight, I'm mildly surprised this can pull that many cars.

    • @thezmaker1611
      @thezmaker1611 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for asking. It’s pretty heavy because both the shell and chassis are solid brass. Also, all the railcars have metal wheels which cuts the friction in half. To top it all off, there are traction tires on two of the wheels. The newer version with all four axles powered has triple the pulling power.

    • @triplicator
      @triplicator ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thezmaker1611 Traction tires? I'd think those would hurt the pickup too much on what I've heard (including from you) isn't the best-running mechanism to start with.

    Great to see. Please can you tell me how the shunting works in Z with coupling and uncoupling? I'm looking into a small shunt layout in Z scale and would like to know how it can be done like on your layout. Does it work with magnets, or electro magnets? Or is anything else used? And what couplers do I need? Hope you can help me out as I'm used to N and recently looked into making a small Z layout for exhibiutions.

    • @rudyvalle9022
      @rudyvalle9022 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The layout is built with Rokuhan track. Rokuhan sells a piece of track with a magnet underneath that is designed to uncouple Micro Trains Line couplers. All the rail cars on this layout have MTL couplers. All rail cars manufactured by MTL come with the proper couplers already installed. Most Z scale locomotives don’t have MTL couplers installed so that is the one modification you will have to make.

    What did You do with this brass printout? I was printing my own model with brass on Shapeways and it has visible stripes on both sides of locomotive.

    • @rudyvalle9022
      @rudyvalle9022 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a brass print that had very visible lines in it. It bothered me very much until I put a coat of primer and brushed on some paint. The lines were gone after that. I think the reflective nature of the brass makes print lines look much much worse than they actually are. Also, some very light sanding on the coat of primer can fill in the gaps , too.
