Chasing UP 4014 Big Boy on July 11th (down the FRC & Sacramento Sub) & July 14th (Over Donner pass)
In this video we will follow the UP 4014 "Big Boy" Steam Locomotive on its westward excursion trip to Roseville, CA from Cheyenne, WY & Back. This chase is split across two days. On the first day (July 11th) we follow the train from the Rock Creek Trestle in the Feather River Canyon all the way as far as Pleasant Grove, CA where we will see the south end of a siding still standing with "Searchlight" type signals that still stand there today. Then on July 14th we follow the train from Newcastle, CA, to Truckee, CA. however, 4014 struck a tree in Auburn along the way, and the cylinders got damaged. Fortunately, UP repaired the cylinders at one site and the train continued from about 2 1/2 to about 3 hours late. After that the chase continued on and we followed it to Truckee from Gold Run, CA. At Truckee, the train stopped just east of downtown to make a crew change. After that, the train continued over to Sparks to stay overnight.

This was my first time in 5 years catching the bay to breaker trains on Caltrain. 2019 was the last time I caught them. In this video I railfan on the Caltrain corridor from May 10th to the following day May 11th (National Train Day). The day started good enough, but after the first BNsF east bound past, for several hours it was dead (meaning no trains came through or were lined up whatsoever). Then after 2pm, Amtrak 777 came in and eventually the action started to pick up decently. My time at Fullerton on this day was great with some foreign power, a few metrolink and Amtrak trains, and some BNSF. Hope you enjoy the video.

Thanks. Glad you were able to see 4014 in roseville when it was on display. I didn't go for the big boy on display cuz I mostly wanted to see it moving. I'm glad to have gotten the big boy overall.

Was he on the siding at Santa Clara? Not the usual route. Unless they were doing track work on track one adjacent to the platform.
Amtrak 547 was running pretty late so the dispatcher sent 14 to the siding track to let 547 pass by.
Bring back those diners that were on the San Joaquin train for Café service in lieu of the water and snack packs

Sometimes I wish they would just sell those units to Caltrans then Caltrans could list them as the same reporting marks as the rest of the fleet. I had the same impression years ago and one of my friends who worked for Amtrak said no it’s AMTK on the AEI reporting tag

Thanks. And yes it is pretty rare for MP36s to be with a gallery set but that may no longer be a thing once all galleries are retired since the bombardier cars are gonna stay for the gilroy extension.

Fr. 6900s K5LA is one of the best ones that I’ve heard while I was down there.
@@BayAreaTrains-kg5okit is a very solid horn. But that one is CDTX 6951’s old Narrow Font K5LA. A while back its original Narrow Font K5LA was an amazing horn. Its old horn got destroyed in a crash a while back.

Alstom must've done a bad job rebulilding the MP36 engines of Caltrain
Fr it does seem like they have did not super well on the MP36 rebuilds.

They should have been sent back to Boise, who built them, and had them rebuild them. Why Alstom would be allowed to touch anything with their shoddy reputation is beyond me.
@@canyontiger4022 Boise has a better facility than Mare Island in Vallejo
@@canyontiger4022 Caltrain contracted Alstom to overhaul the all the mp36 locomotives, they overhauled the f40ph-2cs before that. 920-928 will stay for the Gilroy service since electrification won't go beyond Tamien. 923 is the last unit that is yet to be sent out for overhaul. 928 is currently getting overhauled as if now.

I’m not sure why. It just happens pretty often. NS leaders in the west is pretty rare to get. But it’s fairly easily to get them trailing on trains.
