i've watched that vox video five times without getting it and i watched this for 20 seconds and got it immediately
I used to love radio head but started sleeping on them for a few years. What the hell was I thinking. I’ve been studying rhythms and so I looked up this song. These lyrics just put me on my ass. What an amazing tune.
That is why the band is dancing on stage, playing this supposed slow song. Thank you!
Great job! I hate to be this guy, but... The up-beat and down-beat are swapped places. You could check out the mix by Mojo Kid for the correct version. But this one sounds cool too!
3:43 thru the end of the track you can hear the real snare from the original track, and its backbeat lines up perfectly with this version, yes?
At 1:26 the guitar comes in with two parts, are they at 1/8 notes?

I wish this was the original way you could hear Videotape. I can still "hear" the beat when I'm listening normally but it's not the same as this way.

I really want a music person to explain to me the purpose behind this besides challenging themselves as musicians. There doesn’t really need to be a grand purpose, just curious. Music in general is done for the sake of it. I’m unsure of the ‘benefits’ of Radiohead producing the song like this, from a layman listener’s perspective
im not really “a music person” but you can think of it like this song having a secret, there could be many other songs with secret like this one but because of the songs history being relatively public, this songs secret just happens to be known by some
The first beat of each sentence is the main referente for your musical understanding of a song. Since in the original version it is litterally missing until phil plays around with the drums, still making it obscure, you think it is the first beat in the sentence you hear, hence the piano. The kick of the drums tend to have priority over a piano in your head, hence you are hearing a completely different song both here and in bonnaroo 2006, where there is a rhytmic figure which start the sentence a little bit before the piano hits. Hence the piano is not on the first one, it is doing a syncopated job (betweeen end of old sentence and start of a new one). There is a sort of hidden force, because a syncopated song is very different in flow and rhytm. A hidden key to solve the puzzle you didn't know the existence of. It's syncopated and upbeat, and it has always been, just we couldn't know it (actually the final part of the song is a little bit weird tho). You can also see it as a person said here in the comments, it's just a secret.
AFAIK they composed a similar version of this song initially (you could hear it from the 2006 lives), and then "stripped" it to what we can hear in the album version. Maybe they thought it would be too complicated and this peace of art is better with the pure basic sound tracks. And I cannot disagree with them.

Thank you so much for this. At around the halfway mark, it gets so hard to keep the beat in my head. Part of me wishes i never noticed the syncopated piano, drives me nuts.

Wow. This video popped up in my recommended the other day and it sent me down a rabbit hole that I don't think I can ever unhear. I always thought the bpm was half of what it actually is; and I'm sure that's what most people think too. It is crazy that they decided to just remove the backbone of the song like that. Actually nuts. Bonkers. Thank you for giving me an entirely different outlook on this song that I don't think I would've known about.
