In 1792, a great piece of rock was found on the Taman peninsula that bore the engraved wording in Old Russian: 'In year 6576 i.e. 1068 AD, Prince Gleb measured the frozen sea from Tmoutarakan' to Korchev, which makes 14000 sazhen' (=24 km)'. This stone is now preserved as one of the first Russian geodesic monuments in the Ermitage Museum in St.Petersburg.

Russian Christmas is named ORTHODOX Christmas. It's not just 'Russian'. And it is celebrated January 7th, because its believed that since calendar has been changed in early 20th century the dates should've been saved from moving. So church has decided that by changing calendar real days when you should celebrate will shift with calendar in order to keep its formal date of dec,25. Christmas is not a shopping. Christmas is a religious holyday. So orthodox Christians shifted date instead of shifting proper day of celebration. So Russian Christmas is not just Russian. It is true Christmas. You celebrate it wrong and actually never celebrate because dec,25 is literally a wrong day. Imagine that someone decides to celebrate your birthday 2 weeks earlier or any other random day. This means never. That's what you've done with Jesus birthday. This Xmas tree is actually deficated to calendar New Year at the first place. Such is a Soviet tradition. There is also an OldStyle New Year at jan,14 which is also celebrated, which is also a Soviet and Orthodox tradition
