Man I’ve never noticed some of these, this video is awesome
Certified hood classic ‼️‼️
Double Fucking Rainbow is RoR's official "oh shit" theme. It plays for every final boss theme, including phase 3 Providence in RoRR.
@@atomicbaconbits6695 It doesn’t play in False Son’s. It’s crazy that the stage 3 Boss Music in Risk of Rain 1 became the “boss” theme. Even though it’s only briefly played in the other circumstances.
Isn't there a small "chanson d'autumne" bit in "coalescence returns"? The tiny flute
When you transitioned from "Coalescence Returns" to "Chanson d'Automne", I thought you'd *bring up the connection*. You can hear part of the motif as you cut out of Coalescence.
@@gammaboy4568someone mentioned this already, I’ll be covering it in the next video
I dont know why i expected you to have an actual russian guy for V.
me when i sleep
I love this music but I have 0 music knowledge nor hearing skills so I really appreciate this and videos of Chris explaining.
Me encanta❤ qué melodía tan hermosa y la ilustración ❤❤❤
is a calm night...
Heyy! This isnt the risk of rain video you were talking about!
Artic Oscillation also has Suface Tension's motif, it's quite present in the track.
Somebody mentioned that already 👍. I've got it on the list for the next video
I didn't even realize Monsoon was that melody in con lentitud poderosa, even after listening to both soundtracks back to back. I love listening out for the different motifs in songs, so this video was a treat.
YESS I've wished for a video like this ever since I fell in love with the soundtrack, great video!
Pretty insane that The Rain Formerly Known As Purple pays homage to Purple Rain, and it plays on a stage with a main color of purple, in a game called risk of rain.
The breakdown at 0:47 in Tlalocan and 2:16 in DFR are practically the same. Some of the clarinet bits from Chanson d’Automne are present in the outro of The Rain Formerly Known as Purple. That “popping” sound before the drums kick in on The Rain Formerly Known as Purple at 0:43 is also played slower before the drums kick in on Yane No Mori at 0:37, kinda a small thing but I don’t think its heard in any other songs. Also pretty sure the start to Yane No Mori is quite similar to the start of Through A Cloud, Darkly.
@@RandyRandy-t9f the first one is practically covered in the video already, tlalocan is nearly an arrangement of DFR, and I got 2 parts of it, the breakdown is just a variation of the second motif. Same mostly goes for Chanson d’Automne so I didn’t see it to be too necessary. Good catch on the Yane No Mori stuff. Ill probably but the Through a Cloud Darkly one but not the Rain Formerly Known As Purple, sounds like it’s just the same drum (a block) used rather than a direct homage.
I’ve seen a similar video on The Binding of Isaac soundtrack. Very happy to see one on RoR!
Not necessarily a motif but what about 1:05 in OMPH III and 2:33 in They Might As Well Be Dead? OMPH III has always given me very similar vibes to They Might As Well Be Dead (esp the percussion in the first halves) so it’s interesting to see that used in both.
@@RandyRandy-t9f nah you right
I don't know how to particularly say this, but I think that the way Chris evolved his music from the first game to the second makes it FEEL like the 3rd dimension is springing to life. In tandem with the motifs both from the original and from ror2 makes the game feel lived in, but also like there is still so much more to explore. And even if things may seem similar due to motifs, each song brings a new thing to add or change about it, making it seem like you DON'T know the world, or even make you feel like you have only the smallest grasp of knowledge on it.
Finding the double f*cking rainbow leitmotif in tlalocan is genuinely impressive like damn
Tlalocan is basically made as DFR 3 (4?)
I wasn’t in this so it’s mid

Back in the day, plaguerism was only known as inspiration. As an avid Chris Christodoulou fan, I thank you for putting this together!
2:05 FOR REAL?!
I just realized how much of a geek I am for music.
You don't notice it, but your brain does
For the record, A Placid Island of Ignorance is not in 5/4 but in 4/4 with each beat comprised of 5 quintuplets (i.e. 4*5:4 16ths).
@@AstronautDown Whatever you say✌️”Mr. Composer”✌️
So YOU'RE the one replacing my easy 4 count measures with this 5 note trickery.
So that's what's going wrong when I try to remake it! ( I like to remake ror songs in order to get some inspiration for songs, my 25° Remake turned into a mixed meter monstrosity with 11/8, 7/4, and 10/8 sections)
oh my god this video makes me love monsoon 2.0 even more than before
This is so cool
From 1:57-2:12 in Yane No Mori I believe there’s a segment taken from the old fanfare for Greek television station ERT. I can’t confirm this because I’m not Greek and only saw this in the comment section for that video, but if it’s true it’s pretty cool.
It's true
you missed yane no mori from seekers of the storm has the dew point synth in the back throughout the entire song
Could you timestamp the part in both songs? Is it just the same instrument or like the same melody?
Precipitation plays in phase 2 of bigger ukulele. I think that ones neat
True it is sampled, I’ll include it in Part 3
Thank you SO MUCH for releasing this video! There's literally no little to information about motifs and WHERE exactly they were, so thank you again, ans thanks to Chris that we all now know about this!
@@Sisyphus_Phrime Appetizer
@super_pig103 Yes, indeed! That machine was tasty.
Since SotV motifs were reused so heavily in SotS, i wonder if SotS motifs would be reused as heavily in a third dlc I'm imagining part of that epic solo from false son phase 3 reappearing in another boss theme or an exploration theme
this has had a lot of ones i didn’t notice until now! well put together
Thanks for such a nice video There's also 2 part of Chopin's prelude "Raindrop" in "Who can fanthom the soundless depth?"
Yeah, you can hear it at the end, but it’s still the same song so there isn’t a point in referencing it twice. Prelude in D Flat Major = Raindrop Prelude.
the pigs one blew my fuckin mind, what a catch
Youre gonna need bigger ukulele part really good help others practice this
Even Pink Floyd, no wonder it's so good.
Absolutely adore Terra Pluviam.
Great Video! I knew many of these but there were a few I had missed, so its great to have them documented here.
Id argue that a lot of these are just extensions of the ror motif
@@PearlescentMusic Definitely for Coalescence but that’s really the only one that’s a direct extension. Most of them have their own unique identity, they don’t follow the melodic pattern or rhythm of the RoR Motif
@super_pig103 if coalescence counts then definitely moisture deficit, maybe some others, tropic of cancer's riff id actually argue is the ror motif as well.
@@super_pig103also note that a leitmotif is more about getting something across, for example the DFR motif immediately invokes that it's a big threat(late game bosses, Providence phase 4, voidling) where as something like Placid Island of Ignorance invokes the feeling of exploring a place strange even in comparison to the landscapes of Petricor V(Void Locus, Verdant Falls)
@@PearlescentMusic Coalescence and Moisture Deficit are special cases. They both use the risk of rain riff in their melody but that isn't the point I'm trying to communicate in the video. ...con lentitud poderosa and Lacrimosum are practically just Coalescence 2. It's in the same key, same basline, same melody, same chord progression. It's not a case like the others where the melody is brielfy repeated in one part. They Might As Well be Dead follows the exact same melodic form as Moisture Deficit, not just a one off rhythm in the background of the song for texture (Tropic of Capricorn, Out of Whose Womb Came the Ice, Forgot the Cry of the Gulls). It's much more audibly significant than just the risk of rain motif that it elevates it into it's own motif that incorporates the Risk of Rain Riff.
@@super_pig103 I both agree and disagree, on the one hand that makes perfect sense, on the other hand the it's more recontextualizing the for motif and playing around with it, and repetitions in other songs are also usually not on the same game, which noting the time gap, kinda shows how Out of who's womb came the ice could be the same geographic location as Monsoon.
My favorite is probably double fucking rainbow
EDIT : The correct term would be MOTIF instead of LEITMOTIF. My apologies for getting the two mixed😅 Hello! I see a lot of people coming from Chris's TH-cam or Instagram (Thank you for coming to see!!) Letting people know that it's very likely I've missed some. I will be adding all of the ones I missed to the end of Part 3 so feel free to point out some that I missed in the comments (Though I'd recommend reading through first so you aren't repeating what someone said)
Wait what is monsoon 2.0?!
I believe it was the trailer music for Risk of Rain 2 on Console
Also, I think he mentioned the song "The Face of the Deep" has a reference to "A Fortune In Lies" by Dream Theater. The intros of both songs are the same 3 drum hits.
Yeah sounds like it. Thanks for pointing it out!
Woah, most of these I had no clue!
I love use of leitmotifs in anything, and as someone who's only played ROR2, I love the game's use of it, but I'm glad thanks to this video, I can appreciate it even more via the tracks from ROR1!
Dang this is really well researched im glad this exists
