Zenith Zoysia Seed FAILURE // What To Do When Your Grass Seed Doesn't Grow
Charlotte, NC Zone 7b
Zenith Zoysia from SEED - 35,000 square feet
This was a bummer. A lot of work went into this project for not a single seed to germinate. It wasn't a complete loss however. All of the initial work is still there and intact. All we do now is wait until next spring to throw down some more seed and we're back on track. Don't get disappointed in the minor setbacks.

Do you think pre germinating a 2lb bag of zenith would work out well?
I've done several rounds of zenith seeding now over the last 2 years and I'm about to do another little area this year. Wanting to try pre germination but not sure if it's good idea with zenith.
Excellent work. What was the electric tool you used that broke up the soil?
It was a tiller attachment for my stihl powerhead
For how long can i leave the queen in this mini nuc?
I’m really not sure. Never left one in there longer than a couple weeks. I wouldn’t think there would be enough bees inside to ever swarm, but I’m not speaking from experience.
uh oh... this has me worried. I put down 6lbs of Zenith Zoysia about 38 days ago, following your process basically and setting up ample smart sprinkler programs, also with plenty of rain and soil contact, fertilized, plenty of sun, but I barely see anything sprouting besides some thin annual rye I mixed in to prevent erosion and get roots in the ground. Starting to think I got 3 bags of dud seeds :(
Also I'm literally in the same state as you, Raleigh area.
That would not be good! Maybe what you’re seeing is zoysia. It comes in pretty thin bladed.
@ZoysiaRUs I think you might be right. After I posted this comment I went back out and inspected the sprouts, saw that many of them didn't look like the rye up close. Although my density seems low, I spread 6lbs of zoysia seed over about 4000sqft. I'll keep watering/fertilizing and hope that the summer sun starts expediting my growth.
Does it work with low amount of sun?
I think you’ll have a hard time getting any seed to germinate in shade areas, but it can handle some shade. Thin varieties are more shade tolerant. I have a shaded area on the side of the house that does pretty good but it was established with plugs.
The problem with the old style of link is that the hardened bearing is welded onto it causing the metal to loose its hardness due to the heat generated during the welding process.
I have a 4500P and have owned it for 7 years and have some 400 hours on it. I have replaced the front/rear connector link as you have nicely demonstrated in this video number of years ago and this year I am noticing the same 'play' in my linkage as I did years ago and am contemplating its replacement. My question is what are your thoughts on replacing the center main pivot (42.0553)? It also seems to be a key player in the pivot function.
How long and how often did you water? Thank you
I bought a couple of bags of Zenith seed from Super Sod. I bought a couple of painters nets and put the seeds in the nets and tied them. I dropped both painters net bags with the seeds in a 5 gallon bucket of water for at least 24 hours then I took them out. I Scarified my lawn then put topsoil down and raked it thin. Then I took the moist seeds and tossed them across the topsoil. I then raked the seeds into the topsoil leaving a thin layer of topsoil and seeds. Since then I’ve just been watering and letting the rain do the rest. My seeds were growing grass in less than 2 weeks. Hope this helps.
That’s great. Never had any issues myself until this go round. Pregerminating the seeds would definitely help.
Great video. Thanks for sharing the process. Gives hope for the average folks seeding bare spots in their lawn.
Glad it was helpful! There’s quite a few videos on the channel showing the entire process if you’re interested.
I have never seen this much effort and TLC put into anything. Well done.
Haha thanks. I’m a little particular.
I've been waiting for this update for the longest. Sorry about all the hard work that you put in man. It's just a bummer it's happened to me twice with a couple of bags of zoysia seeds that I bought. I'm just waiting to see what's next with my backyard but I love the content that you put out
I appreciate you watching! I hate to hear that about your project. Im hoping this time around will be a success for me. If not, I’ll probably try again next year haha. Had great luck on 6-8 yards I’ve done in zoysia over the years without any complete failures.
I absolutely love your yard, channel, and content in your videos. You are extremely knowledgeable and informative about your lawn. This is impressive! Liked, Viewed, Subscribed and Shared! Are you familiar with GCI Turf with Pete? You both are NC and passionate about what you do too.
Thank you. Yes I do know him.
@@ZoysiaRUs You both are the best! Both are extremely passionate about your yardwork and have great results!
1 I’d put a tee instead of elbow on the last valve for possible future valve or drain. 2 Space them further apart. Sometimes the male adapter on the inlet side will leak and you’ve left no room to fix it. If you’re not going to leave enough pvc to cut and glue a new piece on you should use unions. I fix these things daily and it’s nice when previous installers realize pieces fail and leave an avenue to fix it.
Kayanya masih terlalu awal kalo tgl 30 di buat main, perawatan belum maksimal
Where did you get your ventilated suit from? I’ve had a heck of a time with the plastic zippers on the suits I’ve tried from local suppliers.
This one is from ultra breeze. I like it pretty good.
@@ZoysiaRUs ah ok, I’ll check them out. Thanks!
So where's the updated video or photos showing it after it grew?
There’s an entire playlist on my channel with a couple dozen videos
Thank you so much! ❤️I thought my zoysia got some kind of evil weeds that sprout up seemingly overnight! 😢
I saw both videos on your zenith zoysia from seed project. I have newly sodded zenith zoysia. I am day 30 plus with rooted sod. How many days should I water during the hottest part of summer? 2 or 3 days to stay green like yours. Already fertilized but soon to do it again soon.
I don’t water as much as most people. Sometimes I let it go 2 weeks without rain in the summer. But most would recommend 1” total, 2 days/week @ 0.5”/watering. I think the higher you cut it the less you have to water it.
@@ZoysiaRUs I stayed at 2 times a week then the heat went to from spring 70’s to high 80’s for a week or so and the yard was dry as a chip and brown and crackling when walking. . As soon as I as rain came the zenith zoysia rebound to green. So it seem 3 days a week is the 1 inch a week concept seem better to me. So 90’s plus heat at only twice a week seem to low of water. I am asking for disease at 3 times a week water at 90’s plus in summer ?
You can water 3x/week but yes disease pressure will be higher. First off I’d measure your water with cans to see how much water you’re actually putting out. There’s a chance it’s a lot less than you think. Second, I would make sure the water is actually soaking in vs running off. A good aeration goes a long way.
@@ZoysiaRUs thanks for your reply. I have sandy soil. Also a new only over 6-8 weeks of laid sod. So I don’t think I should aerate yet. I do mow every week and bag to prevent thatch. I do mow at around 2-3 inches.
Excellent video. I'm GREEN WITH ENVY for all of your tools! Very informative video. Thanks for showing us all of your hard work.
Thanks for watching!
Why are a few of my zoysia plugs turning yellow?
Probably just stress from planting them. Make sure they’re seated good and watered in well.
No couplings shows lack of proper knowledge and planning
It actually shows you how to save money. Couplings are a way to change out a valve body. But in reality the valve body rarely/never fails. The solenoid is the only failure point and can be changed out in place with a screwdriver. Just because you’ve seen people use them doesn’t mean it’s the only way. People waste so much money on crap, including myself, because of information like that. I’m no irrigation guy but I do have some common sense.
Amazing property
Thank you
Where can I but Zoysia grass seeds? I can only find Zoysia sod.
Check with a local supersod. I ordered all mine offline.
Welcome back...I've really gotten a lot from your channel in renovating my own yard. Question, I'm up in Wake Forest, NC and I'm planning to sand level some low areas next week. These spots hold water and my Zenith is really sparse in these areas coming out of the winter (they were thick and healthy when it went into dormancy). Some spots will be no more than a half inch of sand, while others will be closer to 1.5". In your experience, what is the timeframe and success rate for deeper leveling to grow in and thicken up? We're now seeing 70's and 80's pretty much every day.
Glad to hear the channel has helped out! I like to sand level when it’s growing in its prime. So mowing 2-3x/week. You can sand now but the recovery will be slower. Same deal with deeper areas. I don’t have any doubt that zoysia will grow through 1” of sand. You just run the risk of sand washing away during heavy rains while it’s trying to grow through. Best to do the deeper areas half way and once that recovers then do the whole area again to get it leveled. Thats how I would treat a settled irrigation trench, which I have several that need to be fixed this summer.
Don't stress my friend. The upper half of my yard is fescue because it gets no sun due to shade from my giant Southern magnolia tree and the lower half of my yard is zoysia. I would like it all to be one grass type but have accepted this is best 😂
Haha yea. You have to make the best out of whatever the situation is. This is small stuff.
Ventrac is the best, your channel and content is the best! Thanks for sharing!
One bag of that seed over $100 for nothing to germinate. 😢
You ain’t kidding! Supersod did send me a replacement bag so it all worked out. Just set me back a year.
What would you use to kill off the fescue and not harm your zoysia?
I don’t have any zoysia in that stand so I’ll use glyphosate. But tribute total or certainty are good options.
I've had the exact same results with this same seed two years in a row now. It's far to expensive to just keep trying it again.
That’s disheartening. I’ve planted it 6 times with great success. I think this was just a bad bag or maybe the whole batch was bad. Supersod sent me a new bag for free so I’m going to give it another shot this summer.
I have watched all of your videos and I am so impressed! I want zenith zoysia so bad in my front and back yard, but I have a mix of bermuda and centipede and a ton of dirt patches, there's no way zoysia would be able to take over all of that. Let alone the cost of zenith zoysia is insane!! And sometimes it's sold out! Maybe one day
Well I appreciate you following along! It is expensive but it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than maintaining fescue in my area. Plus the cost of overseeding each year. Start small and do a section each year with seed or plugs. I’ve been working on it for 4 years now.
Sorry about how that project turned out! Exciting to hopefully see some more content from you though!
Yea it was a little disheartening but Supersod sent me a new bag for free so I’m going to give it another shot this summer. I appreciate you following along!
I had a complete failure to germinate of Zenith as well. I did half my yard and it came in perfect, then four weeks later I did the other half and nothing came in, all from the same seed stock. If you plant past mid September, it will not grow. I am 100% convinced that the seed knows what day of the year it is and it has a hard cut-off date.
I agree. I wouldn’t seed past mid July in my area and I think that’s pushing it. Maybe the seed had gone bad before your second attempt. They claim if it’s stored improperly it really degrades the shelf life.
@@ZoysiaRUs I think it was just the time of year. Seed was stored in the house, climate controlled, air tight bag.
@@michaelsuedecould have been.
Damm that’s really unfortunate! All that work and not a single seed!
Yea no doubt. But all the grade work is still in place so this year I’ll just throw down the seed and keep it watered and hope for the best!
I also enjoy your attention to detail, passion and work ethic! Great content and videos!

No doubt. I like it when it’s setup so all of the upgrades are plug and play. Very well designed and built.

All we do now is wait until next spring to throw down some more seed and we're back on track. Don't get disappointed in the minor setbacks.
This is an install tutorial of Ventrac's Midweight Kit. This kit adds a total weight of 180 lbs over the front axle of the tractor.
How or where do I get the hydraulic modification for the depth adjustment? Seems better than cranking and a lot less than buying a new power rake.
Here’s a video on it. th-cam.com/video/o4hwg_t2Nck/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wLWEZMi6YVpcZj-Z
What did your water schedule look like initially?
3-4x/day spaced evenly throughout the day for a few minutes. It’ll vary, but the goal is to keep it moist all day initially
That is poison, no thanks.
CT blue looking good.
It is a good looking mower.
What fertilizer did you use? At what frequency? Thanks!
I mainly used green county fertilizer products on this project. Ideally you could fertilize every 2 weeks around 0.1lbsN/K. You could probably do it weekly if you had the time.
Some gentle bees 🐝 right there 😂
They’re usually really calm in the mini nucs. It’s nice!
