    What are your thoughts on Stratocasters and their playability when it comes to a more hardcore/screamo sound?

    • @jamecono
      @jamecono วันที่ผ่านมา

      I feel like bands that use stratocasters tend to be fairly clean sounding, tone-wise. you see them modified with dual coil pickups fairly frequently as well. There’s no rule that says you can’t use one! A lot of folks are down on single coil guitars in heavier music across the board (they are noisier), but i like the bite that sound can offer.

    Could you make a video on how to write dissonance with melodic motion open tunings or standard? I love your videos and you would perfectly explain this imo, feel like I’m always writing “too cute” sounding things by default in open tunings, very interested in mostly how Kyle writes in vs self

    Your videos are incredible thanks alot. However, I dont quite understand what you mean by the 2 highest strings being only half steps higher from each other. For drop c tuning would that mean to tune the e down additional steps

    • @jamecono

      Sorry if that wasn't clear, I mean tune your highest string so that it's a half step above your second highest string. So in C standard I think that would be B flat.

    super cool to see someone documenting and explaining these techniques, this channel is a valuable resource. a major aspect of emoviolence that's underrated is following a rhythm of dotted 1/8th notes in 4/4 where the emphasis is on the 1, 4, and 7, often involving some sort of string-skipping, chord change or alternating between a chug and a ringing chord on those moments, played at a really high speed. think "ba-dubadub ba-dubadub ba-duh" because the three accents aren't distributed throughout in a completely even way, it gives it this off-kilter lurching feel that makes the music feel unstable and, well... kinda violent. bonus points for making some kind of meaningful use of all of the eighth notes in a phrase, and also cutting things too short deliberately on a turnaround or transition, or my personal favorite, alternating quickly between this rhythm and blast beats. lord snow were arguably the best at this and should 100% be studied if you wanna play emoviolence! but it has is precendents in stuff like combatwoundedveteran and even early coalesce, to a degree. too many skramz bands doing this boring mid-tempo metalcore version of "emoviolence" rn, complexity needs to make a comeback! end rant lol 🖤♫⃠🤘

    • @jamecono
      @jamecono 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      lord snow is great too! i honestly didn’t bring them up bc i think that stuff is really tricky to play, but it is v much a great template for the genre. these were some really cool observations, i think yr v on point noting the ‘off kilter’ rhythms that make use of dotted notes and syncopation.

    Frankly, never seen a connection between emoviolence and metalcore. It's quite the contrary. Imo emoviolence is screamo that was stripped down of melody. Like everytime I put on an emoviolence record to my friends that don't listen this kind of music they say: "It's not screamo, it's just black metal". That's how you know it.

    Awesome stuff man!! Just started picking up the guitar and am super interested in the skramz approach to it. Question about your picking, Im still new to guitar but I’ve seen people preach about how you have to hold a pick like ur doing the okay sign or hold it like this or like that. You seem to just hold it freely in between ur index and thumb which definitely feels the most natural to me, is that okay to pick that way off the bat? Or should I learn the “proper” way first and then adapt to whatever feels most comfortable afterwards?

    • @jamecono
      @jamecono 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      hey thanks! i guess my philosophy about form and guitar playing is that, you’ll probably figure out something that works up until a point, and then have to adjust when you want to move into a new skill. it’s kind of a natural process. i hold the pick flat against my thumb pad and kind of against the side of my index finger. seems p easy to grab pinch harmonics this way, and i find i can pick fairly quickly, but there may come a point where i need to adjust i guess.
