American Life is one my favorite Madonna albums but sometimes I wish it only had guiter songs like the ones currently on the album and Miss You, It's So Cool... Her voice + guitar is perfection

Thank GOD she gave up on this demo with Timbaland and gave it over to Pharrell. It's funny because I always wondered how she decided which songs went to what producer. Like for example, does she write lyrics and think Patrick Leonard over Stephan Bray or vice versa? And she probably does do that but she always experiments. I read that for Like a prayer, she tried a version with Bray and one with Leonard and she obviously chose to Patrick Leonard's version. But even still, it doesn't end there because she obviously prefers the Shep Pettibone remix to the album version. So here she probably did a demo with one and then either gave it to Pharrell or gave him lyrics and he came up with music. Or he had a track, and she rewrote the melody to the music. Either way it's interesting. but She chose wisely with who to go with on this track. not that it isn't interesting to hear the demo with another producer, but the final result was the right choice. Even then, I would say the remixes are better than the album version. Although the ravey synths on the album are the best. Madonna trying to infuse hip hop into her music just doesn't work. I can respect the artistic experimentation part of this. But this to me, just feels like trying to fit into a genre you don't naturally fit into & make music so that your kids will think your cool. At the end of the day, I wish she would just be true to who she is as an artist. I mean I am not saying it doesn't work at all. I think Hard Candy is a decent album. The only time I really felt when she experimented artistically and it JUST didn't work, was when she worked with Diplo on reggae inspired tracks. Madonna and reggae just don't mix, like AT ALL.

THIS is so much better than the album version. Harps? Even if they are synthesized. Nice touch. I always felt the Mirwais version was just boring.

I am just going to say it and I don't care how unpopular it is. I like it better without the Abba sample. I think the abba sample sounds corny & dated. Granted this version is missing something, it is too minimal and sparse. Also, I think this song get more love because it was the first single and gets the most recognition, But I think there are better songs on the album.

Growing up, her performance of this at G-A-Y in 2005 in the pink was LIFE, but some things are better in the original; it's the harmonizing background vocals and unaffected street funk that do the trick.
