Hi, there! I'm Jen, and I'm a wildlife and portrait photographer and the host of Wildlife Conversations, a place that brings the wildlife photography community together to share more voices. For me, there's nothing like a camera in my hands and mountains ahead! Follow along with me as I discover wildlife and beauty in our country's most wild spaces and talk to passionate, talented people in the genre.
Photographer David DuChemin Joins Wildlife Conversations to Discuss Light, Space, and Time!
Ep. 8: Wildlife Conversations with David duChemin
Recorded January 8, 2025
I was honored to have photographer David duChemin kick off 2025 in Episode 8 of Wildlife Conversations!
David is a photographer, writer, and adventurer based out of Vancouver Island, Canada. I first knew David by his humanitarian and travel photography, which led me to his books and podcast.
More recently, he has turned his focus to the wilderness and wildlife photography. From Africa to British Columbia and everywhere in between, David’s images evoke emotion and wonder. He is the author of important books like Within the Frame, The Soul of the Camera, and The Heart of the Photograph, among others.
In this episode David and I discussed his new book Light, Space, & Time: Essays on Camera Craft and Creativity. We chatted about how to give ourselves permission to create images that are truly our own. We explored learning how the camera sees versus how the human eye sees. We also discussed how important it is to take risks and be curious in our photography in order to grow.
David and I discussed the importance of finding your own voice and worth in this world of social media and how studying great photographers, exploring nature, finding things we are curious about, etc. is an alternative to scrolling and enriches our images.
We also discussed the importance of the rough draft, of sketching our images, and how that creates images with impact and emotion. Plus so much more!
David also took time to answer participant’s questions live. It was such a rich discussion; I hope you enjoy it!

Holy jumping grasshoppers batman!! That whole colour (I'm Canadian don't worry about spelling lol) and white balance blew my mind. I've been an enthusiast photographer since 1981. When the world went digital I just followed the recommendation of shoot auto and fix in post (if you shoot raw) . Going to change the setting right now!! Great interview with one of the premiere wildlife photographers. Thanks.
@@PeterLariviere thank you! Yes always love leaving from Steve!
Such a great video/podcast! I'm a long-time fan of Steve's YT videos and I was lucky enough to find this podcast. Great questions and I agree with others that your style makes us feel like we are just sitting in the room with you. Great job!
@@4score thank you so much. That means a lot! Steve has been a great mentor to me so it was fun to sit down with him. Thanks again!
@@JenRitchiePhotography We live in Northern Cal but were in Tetons NP last Fall as part of a long NP road trip. I was curious, since you've been there with Steve, what are some of his main roads he gets those great shots from? I'd like to see if we were on some of them! :)
@ well, it just depends. When I’m there I just drive and hike and wait for what happens. I think he does the same.
Lydia is the owl whisperer (and writer of hilarious captions). Great episode!
@@clintwarkentin2062 thank you, Clint!
Such amazing people, great episode!
@@clintwarkentin2062 they are! Thanks for watching, Clint!

Great tips and images!
@@leanngreene1650 thank you! So glad you could join us again!
So much I can relate to in this episode! The hockey puck thing made me laugh. I will have to try that, maybe the football during Super Bowl 😂
@@scotthillphotography 🤣yeah I gotta get that! Thanks for tuning in again, Scott!
It was such a great interview with my sister-in-law Traci Sepkovic ! We are all so incredibly proud of her. Thank you for showcasing her amazing talent.❤
@@AmyPrice-qj1eh thank you! I’m sure you are! She has beautiful work and I’m so thankful she joined me! Happy Holidays!
Another great podcast! Love hearing from photographers that use the Canon system. I too have been shopping for a kayak. Can you post a picture of Traci’s kayak? Ask what size she has? And what is the hull type? I think she said AW. Having a hard time finding a hull description when I look up this kayak. Thanks!
@@barbcullenphotography thanks! I appreciate you listening! Traci says it’s the Wilderness Systems Pungo 120.
🧸❤️🐻❄️❤️🐻❤️🐼❤️ I love all bears but especially my Sofi Bear!
I am normaly a follower from Steve. I like it when he is half sleeping and starting his videos. Know I saw him developing his secrets skills through the way you ask him his secrets. How he is fotographing and thinking
@@nicolaas7 yeah it was a fun discussion! Thanks for listening 🙏
This was such an awesome and *fun* interview! Thank you both for this 😊📸.

So glad to find this! Very interesting & tons to think about as a backyard nature photographer! I’m a Canon lover, as well as Fuji… it’s nice to see he’s used Fuji as well. Will be subscribing!
I finally watched this episode! So cool you mentioned Phoebe and I- she is an awesome rising photographer here in NC and I enjoy running into her usually during the elk rut. The episode has increased my desire to get to AK and see the Coastal Brown bears up close in a small group setting. I’m so interested in seeing the sows and cubs in a beautiful landscape ❤

Recently discovered your channel Jen and am enjoying the conversation series. It's refreshing to watch like minded people having a discussion about their passion and craft.
@@AdrianW.Photography thanks for your kind words. Appreciate it!
Couple of trip suggestions. Haines, AK around mid-November for the Bald Eagle festival where thousands of bald eagles come in for the late salmon run. Could easily count 50 from where I was sitting. Maui in Jan/Feb peak Humpback whale season. It's not a question of if you will see them, but more of how close and what will they be doing like breaching, competition pods, spy hops, tail slaps, tail up dives etc. RMNP in Sept elk rut. I also would like to see the Orcas as Michelle mentions.. :)
@@DavidC-rt3or thanks!
What a terrific podcast!! Jen you are a great host and it was nice to hear Steve go into some details that are helpful to newbies like me! Thank you both for doing this and I so hope to go out with Steve October of ‘25 to learn and maybe get a great picture or two!

I do believe Steve was blushing just a tiny bit after that intro! I do highly recommend his workshop to any photographer at any experience level. His knowledge of the Jackson Hole area and photography in general will result in a great experience at the Grand Teton NP.
@@PhotographybyTimWMoore yeah he won’t say all that about himself. So very true - his workshops are so good!
Great episode!
