Overlanding 10,000 miles in a Built 4Runner
Pure overland goodness. A roadtrip in the past now, a couple years ago I spent months traveling the states in my 99 4Runner, climbing mountains and searching the backcountry trails. Check out my channel for more vlog style videos of this trip. The rig has been sold now for a while, and though I don’t regret it, would for sure do this trip again in a different set up.

    • @hikerxplore
      @hikerxplore 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had this 4runner for a lot of years and built it for my needs at that time, it’s been sold now for a couple years so it’s old news. I don’t live in the states full time anymore and travel, so yes a appreciation value is there for this specific vehicle, if I pay for storage for years, or sell it to someone who will take care of it and continue to build what I started.. which is what happened, the new owner loves it and has taken it to the next level, I can’t speak towards other owners but I don’t regret my decision.

    Beautiful build. My friend has one. He was 7 times in Tunisia, 2 times in Morocco, all the way to Syria and Iraqi and countless times all over the Europe. Not a single major issue. Engine is low in power but still it is always most capable vehicle due to light weight and good clearance.

    genius idea to replace the passenger seats headrest with a fan! is it DIY it looks bought?!

    • @hikerxplore
      @hikerxplore 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wanted a fan to circulate air while I slept and keep me cool during the summer but didn’t have space nor want a tiny fan. Removed the headrest and bought a couple large 6-8in bolts, drilled two holes in the base of a Walmart fan and slid the bolts through, plugged into my inverter would run all night no problems.

    • @hikerxplore

      Negative, I put a lot of miles on them and took the wheels on and off a lot, never saw stress cracks. I also never used air tools, always by hand and torque wrench to avoid over tightening and potentially warping or cracking.

    That things pretty nice! Got a 98 SR5 5 speed, looking for a rear bumper with the swingout spare. Yours didn't look like it has a tag light? The plate location/lighting seems to be the issue I'm finding with them. I like those baja front fenders. Should'a painted that mirror at the same time. lol That'd drive me nuts.

    • @hikerxplore
      @hikerxplore ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely no tag light, but wouldn’t have been impossible to wire lights out the swing arm to the location but never did that. I actually got so used to the silver mirror that I forgot about it when I painted the hood and fenders haha most people didn’t even notice it with all the other cool stuff to look at. Thanks!

    I've got a '97 limited, in white. And I want to build mine just like this, with just a LT suspension setup instead. But the accessories, the bumpers, tire mount/swing, I need. I have the roof rack and light bar, but I want to take off the front bumper due to it being rebuilt from a front end collision. Body man did a poor job on reassembly, so it has loose/missing brackets. Great build, though, brother ✊🏾 located in South Carolina

      Probably would mess with most people unless you ski a lot at resorts. I have asthma and still climb mountains during any condition, I work a bit extra because of it but live my dreams out. I’d say this climb was most difficult due to the thickness of snow, but otherwise oxygen and elevation didn’t bother me like some have before.
