Let's talk about retro games that other people aren’t.
Here you’ll find long form historical retrospectives, reviews, and analysis of video games you don’t hear talked about as much as they deserve. Sequels that went in strange directions, spin offs, handheld ports, canceled curiosities, and so much more.
Are they all good? Absolutely not. That’s part of the fun; all art deserves a second chance.
Looking forward to exploring off the beaten path of video game history with you.

Akuji the Heartless: Review and History
Get your arm blades and shrunken heads ready…it’s time to talk about Akuji the Heartless.
This 1999 game is one of the few 3D platformers exclusive to the PlayStation, and though it’s not all that mechanically inventive, it has a unique aesthetic identity and touches on mature themes that dramatically set it apart from its family friendly contemporaries of the era.
So why does nobody remember Akuji? And how does it hold up when examined through a modern lens?
Let’s peek beyond the veil and discuss the creation of Akuji the Heartless, how it was received upon release, and how this fascinating amalgamation of voodoo inspired 3D platforming gameplay, simplistic combat, and VERY 90’s edge holds up.

Diddy Kong Racing - Intro + Attract Mode
มุมมอง 82 หลายเดือนก่อน
Diddy Kong Racing, developed by Rare for the Nintendo 64 in 1997 was the 3rd party response to the more widely known Mario Kart. It has many of Rare’s trademarks of the era; colorful, polished design, cute characters and a thoughtfully implemented multiplayer. If you remember this game, you should ask yourself…were you a Mario Kart 64 kid or a Diddy Kong Racing kid? You know what that says abou...
Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. - Intro + Gameplay
มุมมอง 134 หลายเดือนก่อน
Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. is a 3D fighting video game released by Midway in 1998 on the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. It’s as 90s as a game can possibly be: early 3D, ugly character models, experimental camera and movement, and a relentless edginess that is oddly charming now. It’s not a good game, but if you ever wanted to see the 90s perfectly encapsulated, here you go! #90s #gameintro #fightinggames
Bushido Blade II (PS1) - Introduction
มุมมอง 104 หลายเดือนก่อน
Bushido Blade 2 (ブシドーブレード弐, Bushidō Burēdo Tsu) is a fighting game published by Square in 1998. The emphasis on tactical, slow-paced, 1v1 combat with instant death really sets it apart from other fighting games of the era. Also you can throw sand in people’s eyes, so 10/10. #bushidoblade #playstation #gameintro
Bushido Blade (PS1) - Introduction
มุมมอง 74 หลายเดือนก่อน
Bushido Blade (ブシドーブレード, Bushidō Burēdo) is a 3D fighting game developed by Lightweight and published by Square and Sony for the PlayStation in 1997. What sets this fighting game apart is the slow, methodical, 1v1 combat where careful timing and cautious play is the key to victory. It’s a bit rough to revisit when compared to its sequel, but it’s a unique experience that’s worth checking out. #...

Black: Review and History (PS2 + Xbox)
มุมมอง 1.2K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
The FPS Black was an impressive visual and technical showcase for the aging PlayStation 2 and Xbox. It's also an important step in the evolution of the modern military first-person shooter, and stands out as a unique hybrid of old school design paired with forward-looking technology. But what’s it like to play now that its technical achievements are a distant memory? How have the art direction,...
Castlevania Judgement: Review and History
มุมมอง 15310 หลายเดือนก่อน
Join us in the warm glow of this flickering candle for a discussion of Castlevania Judgement, the very strange Nintendo Wii fighter from 2008. While the idea behind a Castlvania fighting game has potential, the execution here is lacking in many fascinating ways. The results are a bizarre mix of Soul Calibur, Power Stone, and Super Smash Bros. with a veneer of bizarre character redesigns and ecc...
The Bouncer: Review and History
มุมมอง 55310 หลายเดือนก่อน
It’s time to talk about The Bouncer. Square’s first international release on the PlayStation 2 in 2001 is a shining example of the artistic excesses of the era, prioritization of style over substance, and an insane story that defies explanation. In other words…it’s a wild ride. This video will provide a brief history of the development of The Bouncer, a detailed review, and insights on what it’...
Resident Evil Gaiden: Review and History
มุมมอง 18010 หลายเดือนก่อน
Resident Evil has a million spin-offs…and 2002’s Resident Evil Gaiden for the Game Boy Color is one of the weirdest. It’s a marvel of engineering, with a creative combat system that plays to the strengths of the portable console, one of the worst soundtracks in gaming history and an absolutely off-the-wall story. Is it good? Well...that’s complicated. This video will provide a brief history of ...
The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard - Review and History

It’s time to talk about The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard. This 1998 PC title from Bethesda Softworks and Todd Howard marks a fascinating milestone in the evolution of the studio and open world gaming as a whole. This video will provide a brief history of the development of The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, along with a detailed review, and insights on what it’s like to play in the m...
Great Video!
There was no console wars when I was a kid. The Nintendo 64 was for the rich and privileged, the Playstation was for everyone else. Thanks for including some of the soundtrack. Dark and gritty was pretty common in US comics too before 2001. I don't remember if I finished the game, but I liked it for what it was, I particularly remember the early level design. Though I spent a lot more time playing, or rather getting lost and being confused in Soul Reaver.
A shame that this probably killed any potential for future Castlevania fighting games. I'd love a 2.5D Castlevania fighter in the style of something like Marvel vs Capcom or Blazblue
Holy shit I thought I was the only one who has ever heard of this game! I played the fuck out of it as a kid. It kinda gave me the creeps playing it at that age but man I loved it.
Baron Samedi is a hatian god. Not African. I loved your review though. Subscribed.
I overall like the aesthetics of the game, but Shadowman(remaster in particular) just does the thing this game tries to do and does it better.
Nice
Absolute fucking banger of a video
subbed
I remember renting Gex 2 from my local video store in like 2002. I was too afraid to beat the first level though lol
Remember playing this in junior high. Of course me and the fellas would say " Akuji.....The Fartless"....
Fantastic video man. I completely forgot about this game but I remember getting it in a bargain bin as a kid and digging it. Might have to throw it on my retroid and giving it a go. Again, great video and I'm glad I found your channel.
Thank you! Much appreciated. Report back if you do get a chance to play it.
This game looks much better than I remember it. Keep up the great works.
A fellow reviewer, how goes it brother
Wow super thorough, great job
Ayooo 🙌
The link to appropriate educational material is a neat touch.
Fuck I love it when someone covers games that are obscure...
😐 don't say fuck
One of the greatest joys in life 🫡
Games by RARE, were tedious collect 'em ups. Awful dross.
lets gooooo!
Naw I gotta play me some Akuji!!
This game is what a shooter should be. Guns blazing.
Great Video! Keep up the good work. Subscribed!
Black is what it's supposed to be. Balls out action. Story is secondary.
A pretty crappy review to a great game. During the time this came out it was way ahead of its competition. As a FPS it focused on the most important thing.. shooting. A lot. You poured bullets into each level. It also allowed you to use various tactical manuvers to clear each area. Choosing which weapon was best for each situation was key and a big change from just using the upgrade weapon for the next level. Black was definitely the leader of the pack in its time and genre.
Fair enough!
Dude, please keep these up. I see you getting a lot bigger, these videos are just what I like and this channel is amazing.
Thank you! Very much appreciated.
I was in high school when BLACK came out, it was a pretty great and fun FPS. It looks and runs even better on my Xbox Series X, I wish we could get a sequel though.
It definitely benefits from upscaling for sure.
nice!
I love this game i did a video on the rare bouncer sion statue. I even made his jacket 😅
Loved that game a remake of that would be fire
This is still one of my favorite games of all time. I know it’s become kind of fashionable to shit on this game but man was it fun when you understand some of the mechanics! If you beat this game twice in a row the third time you fight a secret version of the boss! Kou’s circular upper cut is the best fighting move in any game‼️ Combined with the rag dolls physics that move was its own air juggling combo‼️
The ragdoll physics are SO fun. Absolutely ridiculous, never got old.
I was a very sad teen😢 I got it day one
Personally this is one of my favorite games, got to play it really young and really enjoyed the characters and gameplay, to this day im still a fan and recently picked up a copy for another run at this gem, if you didnt wanna be Kou Leifoh when you were a kid your childhood was lame 🤘🏼
Same.
❤️ Promo SM
The Time Reaper's design is lazy as fuck. It's just a recoloured Death from Curse of Darkness. It's ironic that every character got a new design but he got a hand me down from a ps2 game.
I played this game with my dad when i was real young. It's one of the things that got me into fantasy world building. Loved the review 👌🏾 might make me go back and play it again.
Lit video fam
Awesome video! I Was always interested in this game as an elder scrolls fan.
