Wildlife friendly rodent control with Birdman Dad - Mice Away
Australia's wildlife is increasingly being contaminated by rodenticides-the poisons used to control mice and rats in homes and aviaries. As more people become aware of the dangers of rodenticides, they are urging organizations to restrict the sale of these harmful substances. It is now well-documented that second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides are killing large numbers of Australia's owls, eagles, possums, quenda (bandicoots), falcons, kites, magpies, and kookaburras, as well as pet cats and dogs.
In this episode, Birdman Dad discusses an Australian-made and owned product called Mice Away that controls rodents without killing them. Instead of becoming poisoned food for wildlife, the rodents move away voluntarily from the area, allowing natural predators like owls, tawny frogmouths, and kites to control the rodent population. This product is not a poison; it's made from organic plant ingredients.

    This is really great information. Our property borders with Wandoo National Park and we have a section of about 40 acres of virgin bush where the Carnaby''s come to feed. They also feed on certain grass seeds in our paddocks in the springtime. Over the decades we have noticed the flock slowly increasing in size. We don't know if this is because they are breeding up or because they are running out of places where they find food. Maybe the tucker is better at our place😁We have noticed that with the controlled burns in the park there are fewer old trees then they used to be and we would like to have some of those nesting tubes installed. We didn't realise someone would come and do it for us. So we will be giving Carnaby Crusaders a call. Thanks for that👍

I have never been able to confirm naretha bluebonnet made it Stateside. Definitely the Greater Bluebonnet parrot did... both Northiella haematogaster haematogaster ( yellow vent) and Northiella haematogaster haematorrhous ( red vent) did. I have seen recent photos out of USA of Greater bluebonnets... some seem to be hybrid between 2 subspecies but my understanding is that original imports were very limited. Naretha definitely made it to Europe including UK. 🥺 many did not survive, or breed. But I have seen gr8 success in The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium with them, not huge numbers... because there is not huge numbers anywhere with naretha ( Greater Bluebonnet are an entirely different story!) The estimate is 2600 in homelands... no idea where that estimate is based off 🤔. No huge flocks have my 👀 seen.

      facebook.com/share/w2BCUQ5KBQx8w4CA/?mibextid=A7sQZp There's a great swift video there taken just the other day on the mainland. Sadly Swift is heading one way in their homelands thanks mostly to Tasmanian logging. A few other issues contribute to their decline... bird strike on Tasmanian glass kills 10% of the wild population annually. The only positive is that there are some very apt aviculturists breeding swift parrots in captivity in Australia and internationally.

Hiking in wilderness mallee scrub and out of nowhere a beautiful male Scarlet was in a tree singing this beautiful song kind of like a very loud slow but clear finch. Fortunately I filmed it all with a 600 mm video camera. Did you know that when they are too hot they simply burrow down into the sand where its cooler with just their backs and heads above the dirt? I filmed that as well. I literally spent 4 hours with that bird filming and it was about 40C. Good thing I am heat tolerant LOL. I so love Aus and lead parrot tours now there. Last tour was in 2019. 9 clients from North America. Only 16 days but we were fortunate and saw 28 species of parrots. The only Neophemas we encountered on that one was Turquoise Parrots. MY Dream since I was a kid in Canada in the 70s/80s with my dad's home made cage with our cuthroats. Living in Morangup WA now. If your ever in the area.. love to build an Avery but never sure where to put it . Balance of having it close enough to give it lots of attention/enjoyment when I pass everyday, sunlight/shade, my partners considerations. I Have a happy cage of about 7 Australians finches at the moment including my favourite Parsons. In the winter it is inside my garage at night as it's so cold. I've hooked up a thermostat to a ceramic heat bulb and a hue bulb that slowly dims at sunset to give them time to settle in. During the day weather permitting I roll the whole thing out onto the driveway pad. We are on 25 acres, so nowhere near any cars passing. Have to remove the water first as of course it sloshes when it goes over the bricks. I even tried to fill a section of haps with mortar. I really need a little tram track. Imagine timing it like a giant cuckoo clock that rolls itself out in the morning. Cheers and love the podcast. PS popular native bird window is covered in stickers and reflective ribbons so the local wrens are safe.

      Sounds pretty fabulous actually. I was just looking at our aviaries the other day.. when we got 43mm in a day. If I ever built again I am thinking I would put in within a shed as such...stops all the issues with leaking roof joins and different roof levels. One thing with birds... and it always amazes me...they can put up with cold..but not draughts. We have kept gouldians here quite successfully...and being from up north and feathers to suit... they cope ok with cold...just need to be able to get up and draught free. Aviary position... facing north; near to services water, electricity and storm water drainage... away from big trees and vegetation, enough clearance to get a vehicle behind/around... I personally like them closer to general living space...but not too close that light gets on them full on..our closest one is about 5m from back patio but has tall shrubs in between to block light and vision. We have the rat walls... so solid colourbond from floor...so small things don't startle them.

      These birds are fed sprouted seeds and vege chop every morning. Also every week or so boiled egg is added...shell and all.

    How wonderful! What a great video and I love your aviaries. I have 2 pairs, and as I live in Hong Kong, we are changing to cold weather now. Hopefully my birds will breed next season. Looking forward to more videos from you. Can I buy Chick Weed grass seeds?

    • @birdmandad6426

      Chick weed is seen as a weed here in Australia ...not sure if you can buy them as a seed sorry...it's scientific name is Stellaria media...maybe you can ask some seed merchants in Hong Kong

    Hi birdman, what is your daily and weekly nutrition?

    • @birdmandad6426
      @birdmandad6426 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every morning all our birds get a breakfast of sprouted seeds... there is a you tube on this chanel showing this...into the sprouted seed goes seasonal vegetables..bok choy or Asian greens are always in there... for afternoon tea they get green seeding grasses. They always have seed available. We give them a blended finch mix of millets, pannicums and canary seeds... also they always have grit available..currently using Fit Grit from naturally birds.
