Finnbrough N gauge
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ธ.ค. 2022
Hello, my names Steven and Finnbrough is my N gauge model railway, that's very much a work in progress in my garage. The layout is a 2 track section of the ECML with a third line that goes to an off scene preserved railway, (sometimes at least!) a country area on one end of the layout, near to the potash depot, and medium station that just happens to fit where I needed it to!
Thank you for visiting and I hope you enjoy my videos!
May sometimes include some 1:1 scale trains!

UNPROFESSIONAL GUIDE TO WEATHERING POWDERS - Farish Mk1 Coaches
มุมมอง 4022 หลายเดือนก่อน
Picked up two new Farish MK1 coaches the other day from TMC. Having weathered my other ones I had to get that black plastic look off these. So here's a slightly unprofessional guide to weathering using DCC Concepts powders. Weathering is one thing I'm glad I started doing on my stock, inspired by the excellent work of @EmperorsPath (albeit far below his standards!) it definitely helps bring a m...

IT'S WET AGAIN! Ripping up the depot track & playing trains! Finnbrough N Gauge Model Railway
มุมมอง 2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
The current state of play... I suspect the "damp" has been some sort of condensation that's dripped out of an old bike inner tube, which used to have slime sealant inside to prevent punctures. There's no signs of water ingress anywhere else in the garage, or in the rafters etc and there's no other damage elsewhere on the layout, just exactly under where this inner tube was. So I've ripped up al...

Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas! At last I can put a face to the voice !😊. Great round up of what your doing on your layout and the planning involved in moving it at some future point. Seasons best to you and your family 😊 cheers Euan
Thanks Euan! All the best mate 👍
Cool
Приятно смотреть ❤
It being cold makes it more real lol
@@ohandanotheronebitesthedus6247 I could skip on that bit 😂😂
Cool
A bit too cool 😂❄️
@@finnbroughngauge here in south Texas I have the opposite. Sometimes my garage is a bit too hot to run my train comfortably. Lol.
@sernajrlouis oh no way haha! Think the warmest it's been in my garage is about 30 but that was peak summer and it didn't last long at all, good old British weather 🤣
I have my layout in my converted brick garage. Its fully insulated ans a p 750w oil radiator keeps the temperature at around 43F ⁰ costs just under a £1 a day. When I go in too operate or model I put an electric fan heater on takes it too over 60F quickly
@iantcvf6cfffv726 that sounds perfect!
I think you've made a nice difference to those, taking the shine off but keeping them looking in good order. A super-grimy and neglected steam railway is not what I've experienced first-hand - whenever I've seen Mark 1 coaches they've been kept pretty smart on heritage lines or for railtours, and look much more like what you've done, and I think make for a might happier look 🙂 I'm also not intending to use an air brush when I one day get to weathering things - they look like they're a lot of work to keep clean, plus the need for better ventilation, so it's good to see that just the powders have worked for you.
Thank you! 😁 Yeah I don't really have the space or the facilities for a proper airbrush at the moment so this is what I'm stuck with I guess. The powders are definitely easy!
Excellent work there 😊.
Thanks 😁
nice weathering, always be light and pick the details you want to highlight
Thanks very much!
Those look great it really pics out the details especially by the doors. 👍🚂
Thanks! Yeah I think it adds a load of depth it really helps!
Good looking loco
It's not bad is it! First time I've seen one in the flesh
Oh the horror, I just found out I hadnt subscribed to you, have mercy on me! I am ashamed. I am now in the business of watching all your videos :)
Haha thanks mate! Enjoy, hope they don't get too boring 🤣
Gutted about the damp one of my big worries cos I'm in the shed hopefully you found the problem great video mate 👍🏻
Cheers! I'm hopeful that's the issue, the garage is very dry otherwise so 🤞
That's a bit of a pain having to redo a bit of the layout. Hopefully the inner tube was the culprit and once re-scenic'd you won't have the same problem reoccurring. Nice running session 😊cheers Euan
Thanks Euan! Yeah it's a pain but to be honest it's probably the best part of the scenic section for it to happen on. Just glad it wasn't a mainline!
Hello there Such a shame about the damp and that you have to redo the balast. You’ve done a great job with the weathering. I’d seen your posts on instagram and it gave me the courage to weather my Dapol teak coaches, so thanks for the motivation and boost of courage. Nat 🚂👍
Thanks Nat! Glad I could be of some inspiration! I saw your post on Insta, they look really good!
Love it......its made me want to buy a train set..... last one i had was when I was a kid in the 70s 😂. Funny as you get older you want the things you had when you were younger.
Haha do it! It's a great hobby
could i ask what width your platforms are please
The main two are approx 50mm wide, the other one is about 25mm, I think!
@@finnbroughngauge Thank you, thats really helpful

That has to be the best n gauge layout I've seen I love everything about it absolutely amazing I love the station very elegant you have given me some ideas for how to build my n gauge layout thank you 😊😊
Thank you very much! Glad I've been of some inspiration to someone!
Nice little tour of your layout...cheers James 🙂👍
Thanks very much 😊
I really like your layout. Modern with enough historical things. Ian
Thank you! It's kind of worked out well really as I could basically lift the catenary masts out and run steam locos and for the most part it would look okay, except a few buildings! But most towns look old even if they are modern era and that's what I was trying for. Thank you!
@@finnbroughngauge I think you e definitely caught that look. My home town in Bangor Co. Down is full of Victorian era buildings but with the usual modern shops, like here. Nice one and well done😊
@@bugler75 thanks very much 😊
Looking great, very typical of a main street today.
Thank you 😊
Excellent ! 😊
Thank you!
Awesome
Fabulous platforms!
Thank you!
Nice video... I've found that for the final finish on the surface if you remove all the filler from your scraper then clean it in water, then just let the filler dry a tad then dip your scraper in water then drag it over the filler at a low angle it will make a smoother surface, you just need to keep cleaning the scraper in water, a lot like how a plasterer plasters a wall. If you do it like you did i find that you keep pulling the filler up that you've just put down.
Thanks James, never thought about using water! I did find I needed to have a clean scraper and aslong as it was spotless it wouldn't drag anything. Worst thing I found was the odd piece of ballast would find it's way on and cause a scrape!
Looks fantastic
The new platform looks good!
Thank you!
Looks so much better. You must be pleased with the results. 👍🤗
Thanks! Yeah very pleased! Feels like it matches the rest of the layout more now!
Nice upgrade, well worth the effort. Chris
Thanks Chris!
That's made a big improvement. The platforms are looking great now ... Cheers James 🙂👍
Thanks James!
Excellent bit of platform renewal - they do look far superior to what you had before😊 cheers Euan

That's a very impressive layout 👏
Thanks mate!
Looks great, so much neater than before
Thanks! It is isn't it. So much happier with it now!

That looks superb, fantastic slow running i like the lights which my class 14 DCC sound does not have.

Thanks! I'll have a watch tomorrow. Ah don't worry, definitely didn't take it as negative! Appreciate the comments and the input, all helps each other! Thanks
@@finnbroughngauge Yes that’s true, ill have a go at ‘concreting’ my tracks thanks to you! Ian
Hi , nice video and great advice😊👍🏼 I’ve been builddioramzs for a number of years but I’m new to railway modelling. I was surprised to see how you clean the tracks after laying down the product. I’ve been racking my brain trying to come up with a solution so I’ve taken courage from you! I’m also an N Gauge modeller 😊 Can I give you some ideas? Any of these pre-prepared products need diluted. They say ready to use but every one of them that I’ve used need diluted. 90% of them just need water thankfully 😊 Secondly, I felt your pain sanding everything down. I had to do this on a diorama that I’d nearly finished for a museum. Nothing was taking it down. I was ready to start again when my father came to visit me (I live in France). He is a railway modeller of 70 years. He saw my struggle and said « Why not build the surface up with plaster of Paris with white glue and water mixed? ». It bloody worked! Weathering, I use artists chalks from the local pound shop or ‘The Works’ type of place, scrape them down with a knife and apply them with an old brush. Old charcoal powder from the BBQ is good too. I’ve even used the pure carbon toothpaste powder too 😁 Oil paints are great for eating shades but a little more complicated to explain but the principle can be quite easy. The one thing I suggest investing in is a battery operated airbrush. You can pick them up for around £30 on Amazon. Smashing for lightly shading larger ground space like your concrete 😊 I’ll try to link you to an Armour Modeller called Nightshift here on TH-cam. He is really at the top of his trade, a true artist, but explains everything so well. You have a lovely layout and I wish my layout was as near to what you have! All the best, Ian
Thanks Ian! I've got myself one of those battery airbrushes but apart from painting my tarmac roads with it I've found it's a bit too overkill for N gauge. Especially weathering locos etc. I've got a big pack of various weathering powders from DCC concepts that I've used on my locos etc. also occasionally used a MIG ammo oil brusher. I'm gonna try and keep this concrete bit relatively clean but not too clean? Few oil spills and general muck kinda thing. Thanks for the comments about the layout, sure you will get there with yours!
Hi Steven, I hadn't come across the concrete paste. I'm not sure if I'd be tempted to use it or not, I suppose it is like anything else once you get used to it, it's probably OK ...cheers James 🙂👍
@@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAYyeah you're right. I only saw it online somehow and thought it was worth a shot. Glad I tried it. Not sure if I want to repeat it though!
@@finnbroughngauge I'll certainly keep it in mind if I need something to create concrete, and the weigh up the pros and cons 🙂👍
@@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY I'd definitely use it again if it was somewhere there was no rails
