Thanks for sharing. That is very interesting, sad to hear but also very nice to hear from someone who had someone close to it all. Some very rich history.

The first tunnel was abandoned, because steam locomotives got too big. So they dug a second one, with less of a curve. Nearby is an old British Ford. Another sign post shows "Japie se skuiling." East of the double tunnels is a scissor train by-pass. Apparently very rare. Then there is the Kafrarian rifle monument, where a British train carrying Transkei troops to Namibia during the first world war derailed. Here, further south and east, the rails have been relayed. Tunnels station used to have a camping site. Matroosberg station have an active community. Sometimes it snows here during cold winters. This rails are now abandoned, because of the long tunnel beneath it. The new tunnel being the longest rail tunnel in the southern hemisphere. There is another tunnel close to De Doorns town. These tunnels have been used by grape thieves to store their loot in the cool tunnels. This road is best travelled with an XR.

This was a weekend of both, showing the people the tunnels and some history but also the Adventure around it. Didn't want to make the video too long as well. Thanks for your input.

Hahaha. True that! For the purpose of this trip, we took a big group mainly for the tunnels and a bit of wild camping. As you said, video never does reality any justice when it comes to 4x4. We didn't go too far up along the river as most people turned around when it got too tricky with all the deep ruts. Definitely want to go again with a smaller group and focus on the 4x4, not the tunnels because it looks like it could be a lot of fun. You guys looked like you were kept proper busy the weekend before.
