We talked about Rigorous Reading over on IG, but had to comment here publicly about it. It is fantastic, especially during busy seasons. This is our crazy time, and I have been leaning on it heavily instead of crafting from my own brain. It pairs nicely with the curricula we use (Oak Meadow, B&R, BW, BYL...). Life saver for 15 bucks. "Why are you showing off your 20 year-old-sweater?" BAHAHAHA!
Another stellar science level from Blossom and Root and another comprehensive in-depth review/overview by you, Arlene. I am looking forward to another season(s) of science with B&R. You two women are such a power pair. Can I slow down time so we can never age out of B&R?! I am hoarding back our last few novel studies like gold 🤣
@@antlersandgills thank you! So glad it was helpful! It’s hard, we aged out as well and only have the pieces left. I get it! 🫶🏽
Love this! My kids are taking an IEW writing class this semester through our co-op but I am interested in a slower pace at home, with one book for both my 5th and 7th graders. Your thorough flip through has made me feel more confident in doing so. Thanks so much for another great review!
@@brenkm955 my pleasure, glad it was helpful 🩵
I’m so sad my kids have outgrown blossom and root. I wish they had a middle and high school curriculum out now 😭 it was my favorite curriculum of all time! I’ll buy the novel studies etc as they come out but I miss having the full curriculum it was the best!
@@Susie617 I hear ya! I have one in high school and my youngest is in 7th. So glad you can still enjoy the novel studies though and the new science too 🩵
Thank you! What, do you consider, is the "most open-and-go" science curriculum for elementary or 6th grade?
@@ba-dy9xt I honestly don’t feel that any of the secular curricula I can genuinely recommend are truly open-and-go. If you check out my Science Curricula playlist, I explore several options with varying levels of prep required. Take a look and see which one catches your eye. For elementary, you might want to check out My Pals Are Here! by the makers of Singapore Math. It has more of a textbook feel but includes plenty of hands-on activities. However, it still requires some prep time to gather materials and review the activities.
Update: At the time I recorded the clips for my Term 1 update, I truly believed we would stick with our English program mashup for my 9th grader. After all, it seemed to be working, and her writing progress was steady. But after sitting down for our check-in interviews and reflecting on her needs and future plans, it became clear that simplicity-real, intentional simplicity-was what we needed most. And by simplicity, I don’t mean fewer materials, but rather a consistency that weaves naturally into the demands of every subject. It became apparent that returning to our roots was the best path forward. So, what’s changed? We’ve decided for my high schooler to return to Oak Meadow as the core for most subjects, except math (that’s Mr. Denison’s domain). Which we mostly been using anyways. Having used Oak Meadow since Grade 1, I trust the process. It’s not just about familiarity-it’s the balance of creativity, academic rigor, and gentle guidance that fosters confidence and independence, which are essential in our ND home. Why did we veer off OM English earlier this term? At the time, the seasonal shift and the structure of EIL (not marketed as secular but was adaptable for us) felt like the right fit. And it worked-for a while. But as we’ve settled deeper into the year, the symphony of Oak Meadow’s approach has proven to be what she truly needs. Its consistency across all subjects allows her to build independence with confidence, helping her grow in a way that feels aligned with our goals. This is a little mini-update for those of you following along. Sometimes, changes happen unexpectedly, even when you think everything is working well. It’s all part of the process, and we’re embracing it fully.
Thank you, Arlene. Just to clarify, do you mean to go in order of the wonders or in order of part one and part two. I was going to separate them and do part two first and wait and do chemistry next year.
@@kellydugan7553 The recommendation is to follow the Wonders in order, as Part 2 builds upon the foundation laid in Part 1. For middle school science levels, we suggest progressing through the entire year as it is written to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive learning experience.
@ thank you!
Are you using this curriculum?
Yes, with my 7th grader. Did you have a specific question?
This is so helpful! Thank you!

@@keri_plans awesome! I’ll go check it out!
My daughter is halfway through level 4 of AAR. Which grade should I go with for LA? She’s 7. I’m torn between 2nd and 3rd.
@@melissamoore280 The literature in these levels is meant to be read aloud, so you don’t need to worry about her reading the titles herself. Each level covers a range of ages. I’d recommend checking out the book lists (be sure to look at the updated list for Level 2, as it’s in progress and will be released soon). Take a look at both Levels 2 and 3 and see which stories might capture her interest more. Level 2 still includes more picture books, while Level 3 consists of all chapter books. Consider her stamina and ability to sit through longer novels. You can always add readers at her current reading level. At her age, you might lean toward starting with Level 2, but each child is different. Just think of them as levels, not grades, and don’t expect her to read the stories herself-that’s not the intention. Let me know if you have other questions.
If I order now, will I get the sneak peek of the new edition? Online it says existing customers will get the first 5 weeks.
Or should I just wait until level 2 is updated?
@@melissamoore280 you can get the first 5 weeks of the updated version now upon purchase , when the new one is fully available, you get the update too at no extra cost. So it’s really up to you and the next sale starts next month.

Getting ready to order OM 4 & 7 (I wish I would have started the year with OM instead of piecing together everything. Lesson learned😂) later this week and can't wait to use the planners as well! Can you make a video about how schedule it? Because this is my first year using this book.
@@proverbs31cosmetics39 hi this was a bit ago and I gifted our physical books after we were done. If you follow me on IG, just message me me and I can walk you through what I did back then.
Is the paper in the weeks sized notebooks Tomoe river paper? I tried mine out and the ink bleed straight through so not sure if it’s a bad batch or different paper?
@@joannewalker6257 Yes, it's TR paper in the memo pads. Which writing utensil are you using? I haven’t tested mine yet, but I can try it out and let you know! Let me know what you're using, and I can check if mine holds up-if I have the same pen.
@@joannewalker6257 ok so I went to check a few markers and more pigmented highlighters and such. The paper does not feel the same as the Weeks. The memo pad has a bit more tooth to it vs the Weeks smoothness. The listing does say it’s TR though, but perhaps not the same weight, maybe ? None of mine bleed through though and I tried some heavy markers too. Hope that helps!
Thank you guys for such an awesome and in-depth video! Now we want to try all the pencils!!! We’ve tried the blacking pencils at a store in Alaska of all places, but they’re definitely an investment 😅 Jam liked prismacolor, but also he’s not doing as much art but I’m hoping either this year or next we really take art deeper than we have. I love that you also shared books, my happy place 😅. I can’t wait to see the rest of this series. I do love Hobonichi’s messaging of a life book. It really keys into self-care. I got the Cousin in Chinese, the weeks in the cherry blossom snow globe. Thanks for sharing your thoughts just subbed.

Have you checked out Sterling Ink? I would love to know your thoughts comparing it to hobonichi.
@@NoName-uf7zs I haven’t personally purchased an SI planner but checked out a friend's when they first came out. I appreciate the size options, which offer more versatility. While I’m not as fond of the layout options, I do like some of the additional spreads, such as the monthly priorities. The yearly tracker feels too crowded for my taste. The Common Planner, which I’m comparing it to, doesn't have enough defined lines in some sizes for the weekly vertical layout, which feels too loose on the page for my ADHD brain. The comparable Weeks layout they offer is nice and simplified but lacks the character I love about Hobonichi. I’ve also heard some feedback about concerns regarding longevity and quality not holding up as well, but that’s not based on my personal experience, and I know many who enjoy it. Overall, I just prefer Hobonichi, but the SI planner appears to be a great option for those who prefer a simplified look, or even Wonderland222.

Thank you for all these reviews Arlene! I’m new to planners and ended up purchasing nature series big sister planner. What is the curriculum you are using here? Is it an online one? I could really use any recommendations for learning research skills you have. I love all your videos and respect your opinion. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing your homeschool journey with us. ❤
No curriculum, just pulled ideas from existing resources, used a template from Canva which I edited to fit to keep us on track, sometimes I source videos like Crash Course etc. You may be able to find something prewritten from TPT. ETA: I’m reading my notes from my own outlines I wrote for this lesson.

Wow! What a great series and a beautiful conclusion. Adding the Invisible Backpack lesson to my schedule next week - much needed.. Also, loved that spelling workbook. @@antlersandgills the minute I was reminded of the book I shared it sparked an idea on how to lead this specific lesson. I hope it connects with your kiddos too and thank you for watching!
Tell Bella our town mayor is a dog! Did LC decide to go with Evernote? My kiddo prefers digital planning too...breaks my paper-lovin heart. The dinner LC prepared looks so freaking delicious!
@@antlersandgills so I looked at it and it made my head hurt, so I’m looking at other options so I don’t have to explain Evernote 🤣 Why do they betray us this way??
The level of commitment these 7th graders have to Wikipedia! Happens over here too. If I had a dollar for every time I have said, "Wikipedia is not a credible source"...and heard back, "Well it comes first and has a lot of information on it. It is a time saver." I've failed as an educator 🤣 Seriously though, this was such a fun and informative watch. The relay with the switch-up was genius!

"It's nothing. It's everywhere." That Scythe discussion was AMAZING 🤣 We watched A to Z last year for the second half of our school year and didn't run across anything that would not be considered secular (for those wondering). We're watching again this year. My kiddo enjoys it.
@@antlersandgills oh thank you! That’s good to know. So far it’s been great and nothing has jumped out on us.
I know as a homeschool mom that sometimes our schedules get extremely busy. If you get a few extra moments I'm very interested to see how you made changes to your Hogwarts Teacher Journal to align it towards homeschool. To share what I've done with mine's, I utilized 2 of the boxes at the end of my weekly spread to create a section for Saturday and Sunday because sometimes we do learning activities or field trips on the weekends. 😊
@@map1371 love that, I don’t use my lesson planner with personal or work or it becomes visually overwhelming for me. But I can definitely share my setup in the near future.
AHHH Thank you Arlene!! Your first planner was actually the 2019 Supernatural Planner! Then you have two 2020 planners: one SPN and one HP! Thank you also for the pen test - I will have to order those highlighters when they're back in stock, I love those colors! Also the square box stickers in the back were created because some customers felt there was not enough space in the monthly squares when we include extra fun holidays. Instead of taking those holidays out, we made boxes that can cover them! <3
@@conquestadventure oh my gosh! @@sabrinak6905 happy to help. We tweak our plans a bit from this, but I always expect some shifts after we get started.
@arlene can you please give me so ideas on how to use the undated months section in the minimalist jungle series? I wrote down "month in review" when you both held a intro live on IG last month or so (fb was acting up) , but I can't remember what that means for the life of me? Thank you so much.
@@DisMissTnT Hi, the monthly sections can be used as simply or as elaborately as you like. You might use them just to mark appointments or anything that might interfere with school days. Alternatively, you could use them to pace curricula that have specific lesson numbers you plan to follow. For example, for math, you could outline which lesson number you’re working on each month with a simple note and arrow, helping you see if you’re on track to finish by the end of the school year, if that’s your goal. If you do unit studies, you can pre-plan by blocking off weeks in the month to visually see how much time you have to work with, possibly using color coding. You could also use the sidebar to list tools or supplies needed for the month, or note what you need to print or prepare. Ultimately, it depends on your homeschooling and planning style. My best tip: don’t overthink it. Start by filling in the dates, and if it serves a purpose beyond that, great. If not, it’s perfectly fine for it just to hold the month’s calendar.
@@Arleneandcompanythank you. The "just start" was what I really needed lol. The unit studies layout is a great idea, i am still learning how that will work -- as i am new to all of this. I am a major planner but am still learning how to make things pretty.
