The BMW E38 7 Series is a great modern classic - so I buy one, obviously…..
The E38 BMW 7 Series, produced from 1994-2001, is widely regarded as one of the greatest BMW saloon cars, not to mention the most handsome. I buy a 2000 728I Sport, but it’s not entirely without issues.

My own 1989 BMW 635CSI is the subject of my review of the E24 6 Series and why, in my view, they are a sublime 80s grand tourer of the highest order, and worthy of a place in any garage.

The Maserati Coupe, also known unofficially as the 4200 GT, is an underappreciated modern classic buy. Here, I explain why - with Italdesign pedigree, a Ferrari V8 producing nearly 400bhp, and the cachet of the Maserati name, these should be on the shopping list of any car lover on a (relatively) modest budget.

The P38 Range Rover is starting to become a bona fide modern classic against all odds - the famed Land Rover unreliability, suspect build quality, and the hardest of acts to follow have meant the second generation Range Rover has beaten the odds to go from the landed gentry, down to the depths of near scrap and drug dealers favourite, full circle to the verges of blue chip collectability.

The Mercedes W126 S-Class IS the definitive 80s luxury car, with owners ranging from the famous to the infamous - Michael Jackson, Hugh Hefner, Ayrton Senna, Freddie Mercury, Saddam Hussein and Colonel Gaddafi have all had them. Here I explore what made them so desirable back in the day and why they are great modern classics and still worthy of a place in any garage. *The sticklers for detail w...

The Economy gauge will become more important as the car ages. As the car develops vacuum leaks the ECON gauge will be your first indication that the car requires attention. One nice thing about the 126 is that you can remove one of the wiper arms. I only use one on my 1990 560SEC. It works perfectly and looks cool. (But I NEVER drive the old gal in the rain). I wish that US cars had EU bumper and manual HVAC control like the EU cars. And headlamps.

That is an imagined bird called a Phenix. The Phoenix is a legendary bird that appears in Chinese mythology. Also known as the immortal bird, it symbolizes new life and rebirth. It is also known as a symbol of nobility and power and was used as a symbol by the Chinese emperors. In Japan, the Phoenix is often treated as a being that brings good fortune and prosperity, and its figure is depicted in artworks and architecture. It is also adopted as the emblem of the Toyota Century, symbolizing the car's luxury and dignity. The Phoenix is respected in many cultures for its beauty and charisma.

I had a '79 CSi for 6 years, chrome bumper model, in Henna Red, no rear spoiler, although it may have had one originally? It had the close-ratio, dog-leg box and was a total weapon! You could throw it around like a mk2 escort, it was mega! I've got to say, everytime I drove that car, without exception, I was inspired to say, out loud, "god, I love this car"! The steering was perfectly weighted and was just a joy to use. The throttle response, in any gear, with that close-ratio gearbox, was instant, real shove you back-in-to-the seat stuff. If you floored it, the nose would rise high and the back-end would just squat down and launch you. The close ratio box, had 5th at 1:1 so was low geared - 100 mph came up at about 4,800 rpm. I used to regulary see 8mpg! Yeah, I drove it like I stole it for all of those 6 years! It wasn't that I set out to be a hooligan, I didn't, it was just that the car just begged to be driven! The brakes were amazing, I mean they would lock-up just like that at low speed, which you had to watch as it was a pre ABS model, but at high speed, they were always tremendous. I used to use Castrol DOT 5.1 brake fluid - don't skrimp on your brake fluid, it can make all the difference! It would do 38mph in 1st, 60 in 2nd, 80 in 3rd and 112mph in 4th gear. 138 Came up at 6,400 rpm in top gear (red line), but I did see 7,200 in top gear once. - you'll have to work it out! Mine came from new (it was on the options list receipt) with 14" BBS cross alloys, not metric, running 195/70VR14 - I used the Goodyear NCT/2 tyre, which worked really well with it. It's achilles heal was the rubber doughnut between the gearbox and the propshaft, and they would last about 9 months! It was so comfortable too, long journeys just made you feel great and you got to the other end, still ready for more! I nearly forgot, the sound the car made was just ace, Low burble at tick-over to 6-cylinder scream at high revs. It was really torque'e too - you could roll along in top, at low speed, with the burble of the exhaust setting off car alarms! I'm not writing this, not to brag, but instead to share with others what it was like. The car was well out of my league (clerical assistant in a local authority aged 23!) and I came upon it by chance. £700 in 1994! I rebuilt the suspension which brought it back up, to where it should be, at least mechanically. I think it was on 157,000 miles when I bought it (3rd owner) and I think it was on about 224,000 miles when I let it go? It was a money pit but even so, I know I am so lucky to have had one of these for six years and to have been able to enjoy hard driving in it - if I broke, I fixed it. It kept me poor, but boy, what an experience. I wouldn't change it for anything.

I own a 2002 Spyder cambiocorsa convertible in Ferrari Red color. Aside of the high costs of maintenance and the fact that parts are difficult to source for this aged car it is truly a delight to drive . I think I have spent more money on this car than the cost of the car itself. I feel like a mob guy getting into his car and turning the ignition on 50/50 something is going to go wrong . Now all that said my Spyder turns more heads than a Lambo .

And 3 years later I find I have totally by accident followed your example and about 2 weeks ago also bought a 2001 RR P38 Bordeaux Limited Edition. But the colour is 'Alveston Red' not 'Bordeaux red'. (excuse my OCD). But totally agree with everything you said about the car and what it represents. The interior on mine was like a builders shed ..... But its a 'Project'. he says ....

This Toyota Century will outlast that Merc any luxury car from Europe now there is lots of information about these cars remember its built buy Toyota in the 1990s the very best era to buy any Toyota and look how good it is ttumps any other luxury car they did come in leather interior you would have to get it specialty made with leather l just realalise why older cars are sold to other countries we have them in Australia many for sale l had a look on ebay about the price of parts for the Century al l can say expensive so beware if anything goes wrong probably won't because its a Toyota l myself own a 1997 Toyota Hilux l go on how good it is look it up but the funny part is Hilux stands for high luxury which it isn't or is it l won't list any features or lack of but it has working air conditioning which was an option when it was made l bought one with it getting back to the Century the bird emblem is a phoenix tge symbol for the imperial house of Japan but the lack of the Toyota badging on my Hilux there is a lack of badging on it a Toyota badge on the grill and one on the steering wheel and one on the towbar which is a a Toyota genuin acessorie and the name Toyota on the flap for the cassette on the radio but tgere plenty of Toyota under the bonnet because l have an aluminum tray its is branded with the manufacturer of the tray which is about half the length of the Hilux so half of the Hilux was made in Australia
