Bitter Springs a hidden Oasis near Mataranka Northern Territory
A Freshwater Fish lovers dream, Bitter Springs is nestled in amongst a palm shaded oasis in the arid Katherine region next to the small township of Mataranka.
It's a favourite rest stop for travellers to cool off in the heat of the Northern Territory, but we visited it for another reason, it's underwater inhabitants that you won't see much information of in other videos as I watched many before traveling to this spot, and don't believe the signage as I found most of it is wrong or incomplete, I have put the names of all the species we encountered along with some other interesting information in the video.
There are other springs in the area but we found this to be the best and most natural, there is a lot of history in this area so if you're interested I will put some links bellow, I hope you enjoy the video and for more like this please like and subscribe for future videos or check out some of my older videos that are also pretty interesting, Thanks for watching.

    Dunno if anyone has mentioned it but be careful in the water in the north of Australia. Just because they're called salties doesn't mean they don't like to go for a wonder upstream every now and then. I moved from NT to Townsville and discovered that a lot of the locals of North Queensland have zero idea about crocs so won't warn you. You can find pics of crocs up fresh water creeks and rivers in the Townsville Bulletin archive and elsewhere I'm sure. Awesome video mate.

      They are going great actually, it was a bit of an experiment with the Rhads for me and I only put a few in to start with as these tubs aren't to big, I have other colonies in larger tubs, but they have a few different size long in there including more fry, I will have to fish some out soon and put them back in the main pond, I didn't really put them into breed more so for mosquito control, but yeah they seem to love it, so if you have an issue with room they will do fine, the tub I used is probably equivalent to a 2ft tank so if you wanted to try it you should go well, Rhads don't seem to jump like other rainbows as well.

      It's just like why do we import Tilapia flesh when it's a pest here, especially when in the reasoning for not letting people to catch and keep the flesh is so it doesn't get popular with a monetary value, I think by selling the flesh is doing just that. I've hit the local bio security up about it and they told me it was a federal government decision and their hands where tied, I think it's time we made the laws Australia wide rather then segmenting them or they just don't work, there is so much stuff coming into the country now that has potential for problems, have a look at the prawn industry, but they are still importing prawns and just telling people not to use them for bait, it boggles my mind at what goes on to be honest.

    The Australian fauna protection laws allow this to happen. Yes, people are irresponsible and you should not dump your unwanted pets into our delicate ecosystem. But not allowing native fauna as pets has created the destruction of habitat by wild and domestic cats and dogs. Starting the trade in native animals as pets will also create new jobs as their food is highly specialised. Just image cow filled paddocks replaced by forests of eucalyptus to feed koalas, termite farms to feed numbats, invertebrates and worm farms for quals and possums. Not all native animals are suitable for the pet trade. We need to do more to conserve and repair what we have. These cichlids are just one of the species causing havoc, what about trout, red fin and carp. I keep fish and want to be more oriented toward natives. The tank is only small and am restricted to empire gudgeons and pacific blue eyes although these are really hard to get in Sydney as are native plants. I’m in the process of setting up a larger tank which will accommodate rainbows, thank goodness for people like Dave Wilson from Aquagreen.

    • @australianbiotopes4563
      @australianbiotopes4563 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some things have the potential of getting away in floods mainly small floods that would overflow into drains, the larger floods like we had in Brisbane would of killed a lot off from all the contamination of all the chemicals oils ext. I was delivering plumbing gear after the floods in Brisbane and the stench of oil and dead fish was everywhere, there were dead fish in the streets like large carp and mullet, the other problem is people just with a lack of knowledge, most don't know it's wrong to release what they don't want or even think it's better then killing it off or taking it back to a pet store, that is why I make these videos to let people know, our local fish group ANGFA has also done up signs for aquarium stores to put up letting people know of the dangers, most have done the right thing.

      Thank you Missy, I'm in the process in having talks with Bio Security to try getting some videos out on some of the noxious species but as they are noxious species I need permits to catch and film them properly as most live and breed in cloudy waters, they seem to be onboard with me as they may be able to use some of these videos for educational purposes, but it is a slow process so bare with me, I'd eventually like to do videos on all of them to make people aware of them as some vary in appearance from young to old, people do catch the young fish sometimes and don't even realise they are catching a noxious species.

      @@australianbiotopes4563 we also have a pet Red Devil about 30cm long caught in Ross River Townsville. We use talapia as Batr bait and join forces to eradicate the pests. The talapia in salt water are good eating I hear 😋👍

      @@patrickmcmanus5373 Yeah we got them down here to in the local man made lakes and they have reverted back to their wild colours, nice fish but they don't belong. Just be careful using the Tilapia, if you get caught with it in your possession dead or alive there are big fines, Stupid law as you can buy the flesh now in seafood shops but it's imported of course so the money goes back overseas rather then fixing a problem here. Tilapia actually has a really nice flesh and is farmed all over the world and if you ever have imported fish fingers you are probably already eating it, this country needs to get with the times and maybe try and fix a problem at the same time make some money in the process, we are never going to be rid of them now, they are in just about every waterway this side of the Great Dividing Range and in WA. they should just let people catch and keep if they want to, dead of coarse for food, most will even release them back because they are a no keep fish, I've even spoken to Bio Security about it and it's like talking to a brick wall they are set in their ways with no good outcome.

    Love your content. Thanks a lot! What's the floating plant resembling fox tail?

      Thank you! it basically is Foxtail or Hornwort, depending on where you come from, I have actually put the scientific name for it on the right in the video at one point, it's a pretty common plant around the world.

    Great video Jason. One small issue, the background music overpowered your commentary in some parts which was a pity because it is very informative.

      Thank you! yes I know and am sorry, I didn't realise until I put it up and it was to hard to change, I'll have to be more careful in future, it's a learning experience for me that I will hopefully get better with in time, the song started out so soft I didn't realise it had such a loud point in it.
