Mercury 75, 90, & 115 HP 4-Stroke Propeller Replacement - the rookie's perspective and learning(s)
Video of a rookie (me) changing a prop on a Mercury 75 HP 4-stroke (attached to a 2021 Princecraft Vectra 19 Pontoon), and some of the learnings along the way: prop selection, pitch, hub adapters, RPMs, tools needed, etc.
A Mercury 13.8-11p Spitfire prop was destroyed on a sandbar (rocks), and replaced with a Turning Point Propellers, Hustler Aluminum 4-blade (14-13p).

Winterizing an RV using compressed air followed by plumbing antifreeze (Coachmen Chaparral)
มุมมอง 6643 ปีที่แล้ว
This video was an after-thought and I'd already started the process of winterizing my trailer. As I began, I thought about all the questions I'd witnessed on RV/camping/trailer forums the past month. Given the mass amount of trailers purchased this year, there are no shortage of newbies who have never winterized before. Hopefully this helps. I'm no videographer, and for that I apologize. But ho...
Replacing 2015 Honda EX-L Fog Light Replacement
มุมมอง 29K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a video showing how to replace the 2015 Honda Pilot EX-L trim level fog lights (well, my way of replacing them). Other videos show simple Pilot fog light replacement, but those have a panel that can be pulled off the front bumper. This model requires accessing the fog lights from the rear. Apologies for the iphone videography and dirty car.

Replacing An RV Dump Valve valterra Cable And Handle Assembly
มุมมอง 148K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Replacing an RV Dump Valve (Black Tank Valve) and re-locating the handle at the same time.
Why would Honda do this to us 😢
很难想象Honda有这样烂的设计。
I’m glad I saw this video while trying to replace fog lights, after I got the trim off I can’t see any screws like the other videos. Thanks for your video
Same😂 putting LED
Cut under belly you stitch it together with wire ties. Tape. Done.
Wait, you had the handle closed but attached in the open position correct? So when you went to open it, wouldn't it not have just opened the valve further or really not moved it at all?
Everything is installed in the closed (pushed in) position. Unless I'm misunderstanding the question?
@@beebee7999 ok thanks, without going back and watching, it seemed the handle was in the closed but attached the wire in the open. but i could have mis-seen it
Have to do this cable replacement on 4 valves, hope that fixes the issue. Thank you for the video, they sure don't like to run these cables straight from the factory which would help.
Thank you for sharing this video. I had a Handyman replace this, but he is stuck because the cable does not pull out. Any ideas why this would happen?
If the handle doesn’t pull out they can bind easily with a bit of sand in there. Horribly bind. So much that they are 100% seized. But if it’s just the cable not pulling out of the valve assembly end, it must still be clamped by a set screw or something, I would think. Good luck!
Excellent video on how to do this seemingly daunting task! Thanks very much for this. You did an excellent job with the filming and explanations. I just tore my 2020 Winnebago 2500FL apart to replace or fix this cable. I struggled for over an hour trying to find the head of the Allen screw in which you have inserted the Allen key at time stamp 3:23 in your video. The silver cylinder that I expected to see the head of the Allen screw had no holes whatsoever. There was no hole nor Allen head visible below the slot. I put a cell phone above the slot using the camera in selfie mode and it wasn't visible from above either. After examining it for a long time I discovered that the silver cylinder block is threaded on to the solid rod that goes back to move the valve. Being threaded, I wondered if I could rotate it to reveal the Allen screw. Twisting the cable had no effect so I inserted a flat screwdriver into the plastic slot below the cylinder and was able to twist it enough to reveal the Allen screw. Eureka! I was then able to unscrew the Allen screw and remove the cable. I also noticed there is a small, longish Allen screw in the plastic block that is attached to the valve end of the cable which needs to be removed in order to shorten the cable. After removing the entire cable assembly I pulled the cable out, flattened the handle-end shaft with a hammer and file, cleaned it with carburetor cleaner and re-greased it. I can now slide it in and out by pulling on the narrow shaft with my fingers. It would probably work well, the tight curves left in the cable by Winnebago's installation notwithstanding. My cable is 72" long and coiled in one completed loop before attaching to the valve. The valve is only about 3 feet away from where the handle is mounted. Not to Valterra's specifications, I suspect. I will order a new cable to install and keep the old one for a spare. My original cable got damaged when some n'er-do-wells yanked my black valve open while we were staying at a Cracker Barrel in Abilene, Texas. Thanks a ton for taking the time to make this video!
I have a 2010. It was a lot easier. Just popped off the plastic cover with a plastic trim tool. Used a drill with 1/8 attachment Unscrewed both screws. Pulled out damaged assembly and disconnected plug. Reconnected plug and inserted and locked into new headlamp assemby. Set assembly in place. Tightened both screws. Snapped outer trim back in place. Done.
Awesome for filming that while working with one hand. The newer valves have openings on the side. Now I see why. Good call on relocating the bracket, will be nice to have it further from the slide out too. I don't know why they put these handles under the slide outs so much. Gotta crawl under there to drain the tanks when you're seasonal. Ty for the upload.
THANK YOU. Been searching and sorting through so many incorrect videos to figure out how to do this because these years are completely. You should adjust your video title to include 2012-2015 models because you cant find this video anywhere and this was perfect.
I was able to purchase just the new Glass Lens wondering if I can replace it from the outside or do I need to remove the whole assembly to replace it
did you find the cable for sale without having to pay for the whole valve? cant seem to find just the cable
E tremble y well done. Tons of thanks!
Excellent video! Good step-by-step instructions! Good camera work! Thank you!
Good video, I highly recommend this to everyone.
I’m in the midst of this repair currently. I found cutting the steel cable housing very difficult to cut to the desired length. Couple of tries before I figured it out. I had an extreme bend as well which was the root cause of my failure. Goes to show how the manufacturer’s just slap these together and not care. Now I have to deal with it. For me, I just had to flip the gate 180 degrees and it’s a straight throw now….
I’m trying to do this but there are a lot of spider web under that cardboard😮, darn it! And the mobile repair guy wants $500 to fix it for me….🤬
This made me laugh so hard that coffee's on the computer. Spiders! UGH. lol
There is an easier way to do this. You might need another person but you dont need to take the wheel off or take the fog light out at all.
I definitely didn't have another person, but do share! Thx!
The 12 in loop makes it feel like its springing
Right to it, thanks brother!
Good video. I'll mention that once the prop is removed as shown you should pay attention to the white plastic prop "bore ring" that remains on the lower unit. It snaps into place and should be secure against the lower unit. The fingers (snaps) do have history of breaking and if the bore ring is loose it can cause cavitation of the prop. A number of YT videos show this. A replacement if needed can be got for about $6-8. Cheers!
Great to know. Thx for the info!
What a pain in the butt.
It look like yourlower unit is got a gap in it isnt it supposed to but up against each other 😂😂😂
Nope, all good. 1.5 years later and the lower end is still happy as a pig in poop (or a fish in water).
Great job, I replaced my cable and the handle comes out of the mounting tube. Like you I do not read through the instructions and skipped the step of cutting the cable to the proper length. I’m glad I watched your video first
Thank you for this video. I changed out the fog light bulb on the drivers side a week ago from halogen to LED and this was super helpful. Toughest part for me was putting the bumper back together with the clips. Overall saved time and $$$$ by not having to go to the dealership.
Glad it helped
LEDs go bad just as fast a halogen.
@@Scott-dn1bkit’s been just over a year since I switched all my lights (except turn signals) to led on my 15 pilot and all lights still work perfectly. As for the fog, low, and high beams when they were halogens I was changing them every 7 weeks due to lots of night driving so the led’s have saved me. I know all bulbs are different so il definitely be on the lookout.
Thanks for the video
You bet
What a huge pain
Thanks for documenting. Good information
Glad it was helpful!
How did the new prop work out?
Not too bad. It’s had good use since the change. I feel like I have more hole-shot. BUT I definitely feel like sacrifice is a teensy bit of top end speed (and that annoys me). The difference between this and the OEM Mercury Spitfire in terms of pitch and size and numbers is minimal. But the Spitfire was a better prop at 5500 RPM. That said, for the cost savings, I’d go this way again every time.
Your like the only one that shows how to remove the fog lights on the upper level trims. EX-L and Touring. I guess having the upper trim has it “privileges”. 😅
Ya, I struggled with this and found nothing online. No one showed the "magic" of getting this done, so I figured I better. There was no way I was the only one smashing my head on a wall over this. LOL.
That was great. Just what I needed, same exact thing happened to me. Thanks.
And hopefully happens to neither of us again. ;) Happy boating!
Where do I get adapter
Sorry! I'm not sure what you're referring to but I'd start with a local marine shop first. #SupportLocal
I think he’s talking about the ring to being the diameter of the new prop to the old one so exhaust doesn’t leak.
I wish we could sue the engineers at Honda 😆
Well Honda like most manufacturers want you to bring it in instead of doing the work yourself.
The plastic hub is designed to crack to prevent damage to the outboard. I just learned that and wanted to pass it on. 👍
Good info!
Very well done instructional video, friend. There are several other videos on YT that skipped steps, or performed steps Off Camera, which leaves a novice having to search further for details (such as inserting the hub sleeve, greasing the splines before replacing the prop, etc...) You did not skip steps; you were thorough, did everything in front of the camera, and it's very much appreciated. The floating prop wrench was particularly good advice!! I'm having to do this job myself and a grateful for having found you. Happy boating and thanks again.
So glad to hear this was helpful! Happy boating! I’ve got too many more months of frozen lakes in front of me and am jealous of those of you still on the water. :)
You have good knowledge for a rookie. I appreciate your attention to details. I am not a rookie boat owner, but have never carried a spare prop. Thanks to you, I will now. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing it with us. Happy boating my friend.
Thanks for the kind words! I’m definitely learning on the fly, and happy to hear this was of some benefit. If it saves one person from a day of trouble, it’s worth it. :)
GREAT video. You helped me more than you know.
Awesome ! I need to re-route my Black tank cable too. Who can understand the design process?
Thanks! I did the same thing and pushed the stuck valve to hard and bent it and was not successful in trying to straighten it out! your video broke it down clearly, mystery solved!
Glad it worked for you! Who would have guessed poop-dumping-handles were such a pain for so many?!
Thanks. Perhaps the most ridiculous design I've seen in a long time.
Im 52, and a single chubby lady lol. Im going to tackle this next week because the mobile people want $405 to travel to me and $135 an hr for the repair. I too bent the handle and have a new 2022 chapparel 3 months old. Cant get a warranty appointment to save my life.
If you have a extended warranty try going through them
Thanks for the video…. I hit a deer today in my 2013 pilot exl. It pushes the entire fog light assembly back. I saw a plastic clip sitting on the ground, and am wondering if the fog light housing mounts to a bracket or directly to bumper. The housing for light is crushed, and it broke out of whatever it screws in to. Was wondering if bracket can be replaced along with fog light housing, or if the entire bumper needs replaced. Not sure what light gets attached to. Any idea?
Great job and video. Ty
Do you have a link to that prop? And is it faster than the one before?
Hi Eddie. The prop is from Turning Point (a Hustler prop). Address here: turningpointpropellers.com/ ...Unfortunately the one I put on in this video was not faster. Going to a slightly larger prop (fraction of an inch), but in a 13 pitch, should have decreased RPMs by a few hundred from stock prop and I hoped for more top end speed accordingly. However, my wide open throttle (WOT) RPMs dropped to 4800 which is just too low for this Merc. I guess the 75 HP just doesn't have the ooomph to push it. I swapped over to the Hustler-Turning Point prop that's a 14" x 11P, and I am back up to 5200-5300 RPM at WOT. I gained about 4 knots going back 'down' to the 11 pitch in the same diameter. I was surprised that it was a full 4 knots difference. I kept the 13 pitch as my new spare in the boat.
@@beebee7999 if the merc is rated at 6000 I would go down another 2” of pitch. The way I prop is max rpm empty that way when I put a load in the boat I’m not lugging the engine.
@@javery50 worth another "test" when I destroy this one on something... LOL.
@@beebee7999 going to a bigger diameter prop will reduce top end speed due to increased drag.
Needs the little bend on the tip you inserted in the cylinder at the valve. The screw goes in it when you tighten it down on the cable.
Interesting. When I pulled the cable out, it did not have a bend. I simply reinserted the cable and clamped it with the screw. It’s held for 3+ years now. Is your thought process to create a small “pocket” for the screw to sit in? Mine didn’t seem to need it and snuggled up tightly.
@@beebee7999 yes. I saw it on another video for the Valterra style of gate valve that is enclosed. Perhaps they changed their style and connections so it's no longer needed.
Sir you would be absolutely no use as a government employee!! Not only did you replace what was broken but you fixed the problem!! 😉👍
Bahaha...
Good Evening... Great video.. how did you determine where the valve was under the underbelly? Was it it lucky guess or did you have a diagram of your unit?? Thank you
I just looked at the plumbing coming down to determine tank location, and knew that there's no way an RV mfg would spend more money than needed on extra plumbing. LOL. So I knew the tank was above, and that the valve would be there. I then went to the first accessible "seam" and disassembled the underbelly paneling.
Nice job, great thinking outside the box.
Thanks Ryan!
