MUSSORGSKY Pictures at an Exhibition Promenade Trumpet Excerpt “THANK YOU, NEXT! THURSDAYS” Back in June, I started to prepare to return to regular work weeks with the San Diego Symphony. Having never taken over a year off from performing with an orchestra before, I was slightly unsure as to how to proceed. The hundreds of etudes I’d recorded had certainly kept me in shape, but I knew these wer...

@@ChristopherSmithTrumpet The pleasure is mine, my friend. I wish you a fantastic Christmas 2024 and an excellent year 2025!

Yessssss! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Awesome, I'm gonna starting playing again after stopping as a teenager and I want to design & 3D print my own practice mute. My idea is to get a frequency response as similar as without a mute, and I'm sure I'll have fun tuning the acoustics characteristics. Your in depth comparison was very useful, thank you!
Excellent! And thanks for taking a listen and commenting!
Beautiful! How far away is your mic from your bell? Are you pointing your trumpet at the microphone?
Or, are you pointing it off to the left, right, above or below the mic.
Thanks for taking a listen and commenting. If I remember correctly, I was about 6inches from the microphone and basically playing directly into it. Maybe just a tad off to the side.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
Nice job 👍
Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment. I appreciate it!
I appreciate this video very much. Sounds awesome. Congrats!

Yesssssss. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!
I love how you can communicate rhythmically on the long notes. I can hear the orchestra underneath. I need to get better at that! Sounds great!
All about the internal rhythm! Thanks for taking a listen and commenting!
Very good 👍👍👍👍

Is that a silent brass? I used that for a while. The "Shhmute," however, permits a little more airflow. Thanks for the video!
This is a Yamaha Silent Brass. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!
I absolutely love the fast interpretation of this piece!! Some maestros take it wayyyy to sloooowwwwwwww for my taste.
Agreeeeeed!! Thanks for taking a listen and commenting!
Wonderful! I get inspiration from hearing other instruments play these etudes. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment. I appreciate it!

Hi Chris, could you do a review of the studiobricks? It would be really cool to hear sound in the booth vs sound in the room.
The fronts of the notes are my MODEL for sound!

Super!🎉

Thanks for this other precious and very useful video., my friend.
Thanks, Éric! I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Nice work. Especially with the cornet. How do you make that choice, a whim, or wanting a darker lyrical rounder tone…?
Thank for taking a listen and commenting - I appreciate it! As far as the cornet goes - the etudes were written for “cornet” - AND I was needing to play different instruments during the pandemic, as opposed to only playing a C trumpet all the time to stay in shape.
Do you happen to have a recording of Small #17 by chance? Thank you 🙏
Sorry - it doesn’t appear that I recorded that one. Thanks for taking a listen and commenting!
Sounds great Chris!
Thanks, Erik! I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment!

I love how Type A this guy is and the recording of his various practice videos (the boring parts) is super nice. It's nice to hear how some of these exercises are actually supposed to be played
Thanks for taking the time to watch this video and comment - I appreciate it!
So that's how we're supposed to do it...THANKS!!!

@@ChristopherSmithTrumpet thank you ! did Brahms really write these ? i am surprised i do not think of Brahms as a composer much concerned with the trumpet..
🔥🔥
Thanks for taking a listen and commenting!
This is coming up on an audition. When it comes to etudes and solos like these, do you recommend staying in time as more of a focus than playing with more rubato? I'm wondering because your rendition seems to be less rhythmically free than other versions I hear, you sound great, btw! I hope this question makes sense.
My preference is to stick to what’s on the page. I don’t know where all this extreme rubato came from - but it’s really annoying to listen to. LOL Thanks for taking a listen!
@@ChristopherSmithTrumpet haha, thank you!
The comments are really funny. Only bikers know that 4-wheelers drive on peripheral vision during traffic even if they’re staring right at it… the mind goes somewhere else, and the perception of depth to a car driver observing a single-taillighted vehicle is extremely skewed which is dangerous in human autopilot mode, which is why it’s genuinely safer to make yourself the primary traffic observer at all times by putting the risk of flawed decision making in FRONT of your precious life instead of behind it.
Sounds great!
Thanks for taking a listen and commenting - I appreciate it!
