Military Bottom Line - Jason Burds
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 ต.ค. 2019
Hey TH-cam!
My name is Jason Burds. I spent 4 years as an active duty Marine, got out to attend college while staying in the IMA for 4 years. After graduating, I got hired to get a commission and fly in the Air National Guard where I was for 2 years.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to continue towards that dream of military aviation. However, after 10 years of involvement in the military, I have learned a lot about military programs, VA benefits and the struggles of transitioning out of the military. I have left the military by choice and also not by choice and there are unique difficulties to both.
I believe the military is a great opportunity to set yourself up for success from a young age. On this channel I share my lessons to my younger self (or people in my younger self's shoes) in hopes that my mistakes can be avoided by others.
Use your time in the military and the benefits you earn wisely and strategically.

If you want to get to the actual discussion on business and legislation, go to 20:15
Can I continue my 20 year retirement goal in reserves or guard ? or does my active duty years just disappear? When I join either or?
It doesn't disappear. Unless you get 20 years of active duty time, you'll get a reserve retirement. This means you won't get paid a pension until you're 60. The amount of pension you'll get will depend on how many points you accumulate over your career (days worked basically).
My question is where do you go after 6 years of service to apply? milconnect website? base education office?
Talk to your education officer.
I’m out of the military but I was approached by a PSR that I could join the marine corps again on a non obligation contract and if I don’t like the reserves I could leave. Do you know anything about this?
I only get paid for 4 years of service so I'm only doing 4 years
Slight correction Jason. Basic and AIT will count towards your GI Bill... ONLY after total active service totals 24 months when you add IET days. Literally says it right on your benefits statement. *NOTE: By law we can't include dates of entry level and skill training because the total aggregate service is less than 24 months (38 CFR 21.9505; 38 CFR 21.9520; 38 CFR 21.9590; 38 CFR 21.9640; 38 CFR 21.9680; 38 CFR 21.9720; 38 USC 3311; 38 USC 3313): 38 USC 3311: "(4) An individual who- (A) commencing on or after September 11, 2001, serves an aggregate of at least 24 months, but less than 30 months, on active duty in the Armed Forces (including service on active duty in entry level and skill train ing); and (B) after completion of service described in subparagraph (A)- (i) continues on active duty for an aggre gate of less than 30 months; or (ii) before completion of service on ac tive duty of an aggregate of 30 months, is discharged or released from active duty as described in subsection (c)."
Can you speak about what websites you used to find scholarships?
My school had a place on their website with scholarships. I only applied to those.
Can I switch to NG from active duty if I have 4years left on my contract?
You'll have to look into Palace Chasing options. This is the only way I know of getting out of your AD contact early to go to NG.
I have been hassling to get approved for this scholarship. I'm in the process to become a Registered dietitian but that requires an undergrad (used my Gi bill), Masters (paid out of pocket), and a year long clinical internship with the VA all to be allowed to take my credentialing exam. It's still hard to get.
Who put all of it together??
Elves
Can I go from the reserves after active duty to the guard?
For sure. I did it.
I wish you talked about online versus in person classes using the GI Bill.
There's a separate video for that. Go to my GI Bill playlist
Hey brother thank you for the informative video! I switched over from using the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill to currently using the VR&E program to finish my undergrad in business marketing. I'm looking to continue my education and go for my graduate degree. My counselor mentioned putting in a request for a retro active induction to get some of the months back from my G.I. Bill. Do you know anything about this process and is it difficult for it to get approved?
That has to be a lie. I spent 10 years In the Army. Most FIRST Sergeants are absolute pricks. Same goes for Sgt majors. They forget where they came from at that point.

So my wife can only in total complete 36 months' worth of college, or can she go all the way to 4 years for a bachelor's degree? The whole college thing is really confusing to me because i dont wanna go to college, but my wife wants to im at 10 years and plan on more then likely completing the full 20 years even though if i did want to ive been diagnosed with cronic ptsd so i could medically get out with 100% disability at any time and you said with medical discharge it could wave the 4 years obligation. The job my wife wants and ti be the best she can be at the job she would need a bacholors in 1 degree and an associates in another but to fully be a pro in that career field she would also after getting the bacholors degree need ti start another degree using that degree to go for a masters in the subject in general. Its alot but the job could pay up to 150k or more per year depending on which company she works for.
Can the Hazlewood act be used for graduate degrees? I’m considering joining the military and using these benefits for school in business and finance.
So he is one of the guys responsible for a lot of veterans getting locked up and called domestic terrorists because they owned a lot of firearms and trained in the woods with their buddies........
Do you have a video on maximizing educational benefits for foreign schools?
Thank you so much for this info, just finished my first semester and I had no idea.
01/03/2025 - Friday, 1st of all thanks for sharing the experience on TH-cam. Its a God send to share it also with former service members. Currently as of this time im sitting in VA Medical just enrolling as i was unable to complete the process online on their site. 💡 Your mileage may differ depending on when you are reading this, but going in person especially to the bigger facilities will resolve any issues. Also i got my picture taken. 10 days / 2 weeks from now. God bless and God Speed all 🙏 ✨
Thanks for this, Jason. Prior to watching, I'd already been enrolled in VA healthcare, but never got the ID card. There's a large VA hospital less than an hour away, and all I had to do was go there to have my picture taken. Right after that, they said my ID card (just like you showed at 0:53) would arrive by mail in two weeks, and it did. Looking forward to base access, because the post I trained at 30+ years ago was closed off a few years ago due to heightened security, previously an open post since its founding in the early '30s.
I am a 75-year-old Vietnam combat veteran, and I have never possessed an identification card. Recently, I submitted an application for one, but currently, my application status remains pending. Additionally, I have been unable to find a method to check the status of my application, despite expecting to receive regular updates.

I ware a necklace and serous about Marijuana smokers I like to say are you trying to kill me ? You don't got a real medical issue like allergies and possible allergic. So ban the Marijuana or gives us disabilities so we don't need to be around them .
RISKY putting all that ultra personal information into cyberspace, this is fuel for identity theft!
How do I transfer the benefits back to myself so I can complete my skillbridge program?? They say payment is my gi bill. Please help
Basically, the difference between army, reserve/guard , and active duty
It’s true, you only fail when you don’t try.
Can you give the details on the items in your package? Like the brand of desk, monitors, etc? I'm approved for the program but they told me to buy my own equipment and I can apply for reimbursement. The package you got looks perfect for me I just need the names if it's not too much trouble to ask for.
does this apply for someone joining up and there job back after basic and ait?
I should have joined. I have no idea what im doing now.
How old are you? I'm sure you still can.
Scam
Nah
Thank you brother for this information I genuinely appreciate the perspective. I’m considering going to a local technical college for a degree but I also work full time. So the pros and cons of online/ in person classes really shed light on the whole process. Thank you again!
Happy to help bro! Grateful for you watching! Best of luck
Got mine with about a weeks wait after I had my photo taken at my VA facility. I only use it at the VA, my Retired Navy ID gets me everything else I need.
Retired ID is definitely better
What link???????????
The first link in the description... Below the video.
Would really need this now.😊
Help how do I get my dd214
Most states put veteran right on the license Tennessee does.
True!
Why doesn't the County CVSO do this for you? I could have used your information When i got out in 1979.
You can also go to a VA clinic or hospital.
True. But that's not close for a lot of people.
So what does this ID card do that my retired military ID does not do?
Nothing. Your retired ID is superior.
Cool I never herd of a veterans ID Card and i've been out of the service for over 30 years .I know that those who served 20 years or more had a Black ID card dependents had I think orange Reserves and national guard pink/red some had a blue but not sure for what group and us active duty had a green card .I have a VA card it's white but like I said never heard of a Veteran ID I will look into it thanks .
The VA card is superior anyways.
Great vid, I was in the Marine Corps Reserve I never received a DD214 when my contract expired, how should I go about obtaining one? Thanks
Google national personal records center. It will get you in the right direction.
are you saying that you have to be an E-5 or that you're pay rate would be equivalent to that of en E-5 3:08
Your pay is E5 BAH with dependents regardless of what rank you exit the military.
@@jasonburds thank you very much
I just learned that vets can get free admission to Cecil M. Webb Shooting Range here in Florida. Just show you drivers license with a veteran designation.
That's dope!
the D2 are no longer valid and mine became that this year, hence using I it got the new one/type.
So many whiners, I'm out. USMC 72-76. Two sons are also Marines.

There is no discount at the PX onbase. They say they charge the same as they do outside. You can get cheaper prices outside than you can at the PX!!!
PX will match outside prices and there is no tax on PX goods so here in Hawaii you always save 5% minimum on taxes alone.
It depends on what you buy too. I bought an entire recliner sofa set (3 pieces) via the PX. It was the EXACT one online from Ashley furniture (same model but ONLY 2 piece set) for more money. I saved HUNDREDS, not to mention I got a free single recliner through the PX (turned out to be a 3 piece set). Tax free and free payment plan too! What a deal!
You have to have taxable income to contribute to a ira so most college students cannot put the pell grant there
True. There's an assumption that you're making at least SOME money. Not sure how you make $0 of taxable income.
