CALL: Climate Action for Lifelong Learners
CALL-GREENWASHING WEBINAR w. CHRIS RUSSILL & IRIS FAIRLEY-BEAM
Making environmental claims without being able to back them up or “greenwashing” is more prevalent than we think. In this highly informative Webinar, CALL welcomes a panel of two experts who discuss greenwashing: what it is; how it has changed; the challenge of AI; why it is a significant problem; some of the consequences; how/why other countries are moving on this; all in the context of why this is a problem for Canada. Our panelists also discuss Bill C59 (to amend the Canada Competition Act) and private member’s Bill C-372 (an Act to ban fossil fuel advertising).
Our Panelists are:
- Chris Russill, an Associate Professor in Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication and Academic Director at Re.Climate a centre for climate communication and public engagement;
- Iris Fairley-Beam, an independent researcher based in Vancouver who works to reform the law to prevent greenwashing.

Any politician that thinks donations "matter" instead of solutions and policies "matter" and lead to donations is deluded. Lets give the billions that we now give to foreign fossil fuel companies as grants to Canadians to donate to the politicians campaign who's policies that we support. Take the money out of politics and let the politicians with the actual popular solutions get the money and get elected. In order to qualify for the government political donation money, you should be required to prove you are a Canadian, Registered to vote, and actually vote. My personal belief is that voting for adult Canadians should be mandatory and results of voting should be proportional representation. Listen to David. He has one quality lacking in most of our politicians, Wisdom.
Awesome amazing video. I love it. Where can I find the "who do you trust to talk about climate change" chart?
Great town hall btw
Why isnt work place a focus area? Seems that most of us privileged folks all effected by clumate change work.
When will regenerative farmers and agro foresters be able to get paid to sequestor carbon in perenial plants and thier soil?
What game are you playing? The estimated 1.0 C of modest and gradual warming since the Little Ice Age has improved human prosperity and flourishing be every metric. Moreover, the warming trend started long before fossil fuels. The AGW hypothesis was dead on arrival, because already established CO2 science carried out using the Scientific Method demonstrates three principles AGW alarmists have never disproven: 1) CO2 warming effect declines logarithmically as the concentration increases, 2) CO2 has a saturation point or absorption limit preventing 'runaway' warming, and 3) CO2 has a sink rate where the biomass absorbs additional CO2 (plant food) leading to the CO2 Fertilization Effect and a greening fertile planet. If AGW alarmist want their counter-intuitive idea to be taken seriously, they need to start over from the beginning and show experimental evidence that invalidates the already established CO2 physics. Only then can they insert their esoteric AGW model-based hypothesis as a plausible and credible alternative to reality. After 50+ years of failed predictions, abusive propaganda (like this vide), data manipulation, ethics scandals, censorship, bullying, cancelling, hating, violence, vandalism, social division, and trillions of dollars of public money wasted and transferred to activists and billionaires - clearly AGW is not a well-intended concern backed by goodwill and solid science. Enough is enough, I withdraw all support for this anti-science, anti-social, misanthropic movement. In the market place of ideas, next to all variants of Marxism there has never been such a destructive force.
Poor audio will make many visitors move on. Why no headset mic, lapel mic or desktop mic? It sounds and looks like the whole thing was recorded with a laptop's camera and microphone.
Great meeting and thank you for posting up the full meeting--I had to step away unfortunately just before David Suzuki came on :D. I am sure you have a lot of great ideas for Oct 1--what about a "human powered entertainment" theme? Make moving to a fossil free future FUN! Focus on things we used to do before there were electronic amusements... and we were all more connected.
Across the country reminds me of the protesting against clear cuttting at Clayoquot Sound years ago and a huge old growth tree stump was shipped aross the country with events in each city it arrived at (musicians, speeches, etc,) drew large crowds and media attention. I am in Mississauga. How do I sign up?
