All I see is that inappropriate content for minors be moved to an adult section. I don’t see anything being removed. Adults can access anything. The right thing for children to have access to that content is to have a parent present and discussing sexuality with their own kids. I don’t see a problem with it. Librarians should stop grooming children.

I was curious when I saw the (now I know idgets) protesting on the pier the other day what it was all about and thankfully the city has stepped in with some common sense here as far as getting sex out of the children’s section. It’s not a ban if it’s still in the library.

It’s my understanding that sexually explicit books as well as the influence of alternate lifestyles are the concern. It doesn’t seem like a ban on books, but a concern for the young and impressionable minds of children. Thus the reason to relocate these types of books. What’s wrong about that?

When I’m introduced to a new idea or come across something I don’t yet understand or hear conflicting opinions on a subject, it’s nice to go to a library to learn a little more from people who have spent a lot of time and care around these ideas. Young adults nowadays - just talking with classmates at school, hearing the news, using the internet - they’re going to hear bits and fragments of new ideas all over the place. The library most likely won’t be introducing these ideas to young adults, but it could be a place to help them make sense of new and unfamiliar things.

Southern California is going through some tough changes. Huntington Beach, Coasta Mesa, and Laguna Beach is the most ridiculously conservative area in the Orange County. Because they are so afraid of it being like Los Angeles County, which is ridiculously gone the other way. In Long Beach, LA County, they build a multi billion dollar library with a namesake of Billie Jean King, just shuts down this new main library downtown LBC because they cannot control the homeless issue. The library cannot stop homeless people from coming in the facilities to use it. Even though they are all over the lobby sleeping in reading chairs soiling them and the carpets with a horrible stench. Homeless in SoCal are difficult, they want to live as homeless so they can abuse hard drugs and alcohol with impunity. To get into a transition program for housing, they have to clean up and get sober. Most of them don’t want to get housing with security and cops dictating their substance abuse. Why can’t California just be in the middle of the political spectrum.

It’s not a book ban my friend. It’s a book relocation from the children’s section to the adult section. You forgot books like grandads pride, it’s perfectly normal and Gender queer. Another note, stop calling our nation a democracy. A democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. The US is a constitutional republic which is defined as a system in which a representative government is bound by a written, legal document that defines its powers and limits. As a general rule, constitutional republics separate the powers of the government between three equal branches that exercise checks and balances over each other.

Everyone wants quality literature and educational books available to our teens. The problem is that the very Progressive ALA recommended some books, that were put into our library that are totally inappropriate for kids or Young teens. My personal opinion is I would prefer them not to be in the library at all but moving them to the adult section is a good compromise. I just want our library to be a quality safe place for everyone to get books .

Huntington Beach Public Library is a financially healthy, well-managed library--in fact, one of the most efficiently run in the state. If LS&S, a for-profit private corporation, run by a private equity fund, takes over the staffing, collection, and programing, it will be devastating for the city of HB. The track record for LS&S privatized libraries is not good. Recently, Mission Viejo and Fullerton, CA rejected their offer, and Santa Clarita returned to public status after losing money while contracting with LS&S. They also lost a large portion of their book collection because LS&S prefers libraries with a smaller amount of books and materials for checkout.

I am the first public commentator in the video. Thank you for highlighting what is happening in Huntington Beach, CA. The HBCC majority feels that they have a mandate to do whatever they want. They were elected by 13.6-12.3 percent in 2022. That is hardly a mandate. We clearly have a voter problem as in not enough people are exercising their civic responsibility. That is how we end up with a dare I say radicalized, fascist leaning, Christian nationalist majority. They do not listen to residents and vote per their party line (despite the council seats being non-partisan). Mayor Gracey van der Mark is pushing anti sex education and book banning which she has been doing since at least 2015. She had planned to hold a literature burning even at HB State beach several years ago (I have a screenshot of her response). She is not a good faith advocate for books and certainly not the Huntington Beach library system.

Library Hunter - thanks for raising this serious issue in HB. Some folks have asked questions on the viedo which show that they are unaware of the HUNDREDS of people who have gone to many council meetings and asked similiar and more questions. There are either no answers or answers by one or two council members that are brief, defensive and speak to MAGA values with little recognition or concerns for the over 500 residents that spoke against it. There was no study, no harm claimed, no previous problems, however the current mayor who has pursued this issue in many avenues long before she was on the HB council is the one who brought this forward. This has been her issue, similiar to the Moms for Liberty movement for many years. They brought huge photo's of pictures they claimed were in books in our library, and many of the books were not even in our libray. Similiar to the same photo's brought forward at all Mom's for Liberty library takeover's across the country especially in the southern USA states. She stated at meetings that the children's section was full of pornography. Completely untrue. Books on biological processes such as passing gas, or pooping and/or having menstrual periods are not books of a sexual natue. Books displaying a culture or religious or personal perspective different than the traditional judeo-chirstian perspective are not porn just because the book differ's from one's personal views. It is book banning when new books that do not meet the political appointees criteria are not allowed to be in the library. Simple: That book is banned from this library. That is what is happening. Tax payers, charitatable sources and other gifted money make up the funds to support our libraries. This is not a church library - it is a publc library, and should be stocked with books that reflect the wide range of multi -cultural, religious and personal perspectives whose money goes into support our library, and children's book belong in the children's section, not in a "special" section. Thank you for the viedo and the imporatant information shared by Ms. Daus.

Stop saying “banning”. It’s so inaccurate! No one is banning any books, they are just being moved to the adult section. They’re still their for your viewing pleasure. They’re just being moved so underage children don’t see what their parents don’t want them to. Just like if a parent is ok with it, they can check out the book for their child. I’m not for banning ANY literature but I am for protecting a child’s innocence. I have read gender queer & it’s quite disturbing! Books on pooping & menstruation should not be moved to the adult section, I agree that’s ridiculous. But this stuff all needs to be worked out.

@@antipattern0 , then please give us the titles and authors of those books. Many parents have heard these stories from a few community members so they have come to the library, spent considerable time going through the stacks, and they can't find them. Neither can conservative news outlets that have visited. Give us the list and we will investigate! We keep asking Mayor Van Der Mark to give us the list, but she won't. Why?

I am not sure where I stand on this, I would need more information. For one thing last your we were greeted by a table of children's materials, and then next to it a table promoting Homosexuality. I think that kind of behavior opens the Library up to scrutiny. That said, I fail to see how privatizing it would be in anyone's best interests,
