    Vets now recommend injections be done on legs and not necks anymore. Since some injections cause cancerous tumors. As one vet told me, “You can amputate a leg but you can’t amputate the head.” I choose to do front legs so they’d still be able to use hind legs to reach. For dogs and cats vets use the back leg marking what goes in each leg to track tumor growths. You did a great video, as always. I’ve enjoyed going through all of these.

    • @twinpeartutorials8840
      @twinpeartutorials8840 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the information! I would agree not to give injections in the neck. IM injections are typically given straight into the muscle of the rear legs on goats (though I have seen people do neck), but it's easy to hit a tendon and have your goat limping around on three legs for awhile (I have unfortunately experienced this once in a kid, who thankfully fully recovered). Having just been at the vet, I still observe him giving goats Sub-q shots in the loose skin above the front legs in the shoulder area. But the science is always changing so it's good to stay abreast of current recommendations! Glad you're enjoying the tutorials. 🙂

    Ah the ole' curse of the junior champion. I have had two homebred BJDIS in the last 2 years; one of whom beat out 2 nationally competitive standard breeders for the Best in Show lineup (including a 2x National Junior champion). Judge said she "excelled in every area of the scorecard." Didn't freshen well. *sigh* The other I bred freshened with a hugeeee foreudder pocket. Good times good times. :p Thanks for the video. I was shaving juniors last night at 11pm thinking "ugh why am I doing this?" But honestly, my biggest reason for showing them is for the experience. I have several juniors I'm taking to Nationals and I want them to get their crazies out in club shows before they hit the big stage.

Best of luck at Nationals!

      @@twinpeartutorials8840 I thought I'd try again before responding. I use raw goat milk and goat milk yogurt bought at Whole Foods. This time I made it in a two pound jar with any 1.5 tablespoons of yogurt. I have to admit, I don't have a thermometer. Usually, when I make cow milk yogurt I use raw milk. I boil it then I let it cool down. I use my little finger as a thermometer. I bend it, dip it in the milk and count four seconds. If I can tolerate the heat I mix it with the culture. Usually, it works. This time, I decided to keep the goat milk at a higher temperature and let it sit in a warm place for almost 48 hours. The consistency was more like pudding this time. This is slightly better but it's still not the consistency of course milk yogurt.

      Nice job! Getting your housing EARLY is the way to go. I'm not sure what the rules are in Louisville, but I believe most Nationals do not allow you to sleep in the barn. At Redmond you could pay to camp in the grass outside the barns (the RV park was separate). Best of luck in your preparations!

    Could you share what kind of panels those are that you use? We are looking to do a similar set up but can’t find any panels like that near us.

      They are the Prima Gates from Premiere One (same company that makes the heat lamps). I’m a big fan of their products, excellent quality and well tested by people who actually use them.

    Nice tips, I was looking to start with Nigerian Dwarves. I'm also in Australia, and most, if not all, herds here go back to two or three lines of imports. So, my plan was to get a good buck from one of the first herds here, then find good does a little closer to home (since it's a very good chance they will have some common genes it should meet your tips). Edit: wow, spell check is not my friend today.

    • @twinpeartutorials8840
      @twinpeartutorials8840 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You definitely have a smaller gene pool in Australia! That could be beneficial for linebreeding, but hopefully not too limiting. I believe Sugar Moon NS Alejandro had semen successfully exported to Australia which might be something to look for as you build your herd! From my brief discussions with other Australian breeders, there were struggles with mammary systems and milk production, Alejandro (or maybe a son born there) would help with both! Wishing you the best of luck with your herd. 😊

    Hey, as a new goat owner I love the video! Just wondering what mineral you feed? I’m trying to find one that’s not just the blocks. Thanks

      Great question! The best loose mixed minerals currently on the market are SweetLix Meat Maker (or SweetLix Magnum Milker) and Purina Goat Mineral. They're extensively researched and the highest PPM copper and selenium on the market. My goats find the SweetLix Meat Maker more palatable than the Purina minerals.

    Is it possible to milk some of the dam milk out when she is a FF with a singleton? To avoid being lopsided and to increase her production. Also, does the amount of milk that the dam produces depend on the number of babies that came out of her body or the demand that is acting upon her milk supply?

    • @twinpeartutorials8840
      @twinpeartutorials8840 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great questions! If I had a doe with a single getting a lopsided udder, yes, I would milk out the side the kid is not nursing from to even her up. The kid will often prefer the side with the larger orifice. To answer your second question, the number of kids she had will definitely affect her milk production! A doe with quads will outproduce a doe with a single kid. I never expect a great lactation from a doe with a single kid. But conversely, don't assume a doe with a large litter can fully feed all of her kids without assistance. Also keep in mind that a first freshening doe typically has a modest lactation, which will improve with further lactations.

    Do you need to do DNA testing to prove whos the dam and sire?

    • @twinpeartutorials8840
      @twinpeartutorials8840 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a great question! As of this comment in 2023, parents do NOT need to be DNA verified. However, bucklings born in 2024 and beyond MUST have DNA on file with ADGA before their offspring can be registered.

    Can we put our buck out with our does while our year old Pyrenees in training is in the same field. She has been around the buck pen everyday but not in contact with our buck. Just found your videos - great information compared to all others we have seen.

    • @twinpeartutorials8840
      @twinpeartutorials8840 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As long as you haven't observed any aggressive behavior from your dog towards goats, you shouldn't have any problem including your buck in the mix (we have two LGDs with our bucks). Of course, make sure you don't mind your buck breeding any of the does you put him in with! It's rut season 😉 or put a buck apron on him to prevent breeding. When you incorporate him, just make sure you're home and can observe the behavior for a bit.

    I am so glad your video popped up. I just bought a pregnant young goat and the previous owner told me I didn't need to do anything special for her. Luckily, she's not gorging on the alfalfa but eating some straw, which kind of surprised me. I'll have to get some grass hay and separate her from the sheep so I can watch more what she eats. THANK YOU!

    • @twinpeartutorials8840
      @twinpeartutorials8840 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're very welcome! If she's eating straw, she's probably seeking fiber. Straw can also act kind of like a saltine does for us if our tummies aren't feeling well (my does don't have regular access to straw, but will nibble on it when they see some). I bet she'll love some grass hay and then start to add in some calcium (alfalfa hay or alfalfa pellets) in her last couple weeks of gestation and consider introducing grain (in small ratios, increasing a little each day) about 10 days from her due date. Also make sure she has access to a quality loose mineral every day. Wishing you a successful kidding!
