Tractor Logging with a Crane - Field Test

I built a small crane and mounted it on my forestry winch and 30 hp tractor. This was the first trip out in the woods with it. Getting a feel for it as I went. I picked up wood in 3 spots. Bigger wood as I went. The video is the first spot and the last spot. I knew the hinge post needed to be plumb in order to neutralize gravity when rotating the boom. I use the top and tilt hydraulics to plumb the hinge. I didn't expect the cylinders to drift so much and needed to make continual adjustments. There is half a cord plus in that load.

We went to the Great American Steam Up held at Powerland Heritage Park in Oregon. Lots of antique steam powered equipment - running. A couple clips from the almost hour long parade. A fun day !

Have to move a big old pasture spruce blow down across a trail. Once I cut in enough I could see that it was not hung up on anything. It was propped up and spiked into the ground by all the underneath branches. I cut enough of them so that when I pulled straight back with the winch the tree collapsed to the ground. From there it was a grapple job to move the tree and clear the road path..

We have a lot of down fir from last winters high winds and heavy snow. I am going to salvage what stud wood logs I can from it. You only need a 5" diameter to make a 2X4. Since I haven't had a tractor in the woods for a while I started with the smaller stuff to get the rust and cob webs out.

The deep winter frost here pushes rocks up into the road surface. Every spring there is a new crop. Any that will stop my grader blade or snow plow I pull out. This one only had a knub showing but felt solid. You never know what lies unseen underneath.

Using a swing dutchman to drop a leaner at an angle against it's natural fall. Also a good demonstration of why hanging around the stump when a tree, even a small tree, is falling could be a bad thing.

My wife and I were having our late afternoon coffee in the living room when she said, "what's that in the road". She grabbed the binoculars - "It's a bob cat!!" I grabbed the camera and got this video through the window and about 60 or 70 yards away.

Experimental Crane on my Forestry Winch

I did an experiment to see if I could mount a simple crane on my small forestry winch and be able to control the cable. It is not a strong crane. Just something to get a feel to see if building a proper crane would be worth while. This would be for smallish wood that in the past I loaded by hand but now need help.

The tree didn't go down. There was almost nothing holding it. It is hard to walk away but the top was dead and I didn't want to fool around at the base. Patience paid off.
