NYC Autoshow 2024
I had to go and see what the 2025 Ford Explorer looks like in person. It looks really good! I can see myself driving one if I can afford it. I also had to check out some of the Lexus trucks like the GX 550.

Hey blacktalon what’s up buddy, so I have the 2017 Ford Explorer Sport 3.5 l ecoboost, I already have the 20in already but I’m interested in some 18in any recommendations on more of a rugged wheel for the suv/off roady look? My shop near me said I can go 18x9 but some of the ones I like don’t match the bore size you had mentioned
@ApocalypsoAngler247 Sup! 265/60/18 is a popular 18" size. You really have to do your homework on finding wheels that fit the Explorer... You will have to find a wheel you like and see if they make them in our specs. I hated the search because I couldn't find wheels that would work. I was able to find FuelOffroad wheels and was able to locate some that fit our specs. A custom set of wheels is always an option if you had the company willing to build the wheels to your desired spec and if you wanted to pay the price. Side note: an upcoming wheel company has reached out to me for a wheel collaboration once I get the new next vehicle. So once I have my next "truck," a wheel deal will be coming to the channel/my viewers
@ oooh ok awesome I really want Dora to look beefy
still waiting for the videos of your new ride!!!!!
@sethmccall1228 Don't worry, it's still in the works. I have one priority in front of me getting a new car, and then I will post up what I get. Hold tight for a bit longer.
I have a 18 sport have 255/50R20 I would like to stay on stock rims but get a wider tire maybe meater tires trying to get a better ride quality I live in Chicago with a lot of pot holes but also getting new suspension all the way around H&R lower springs idk if that makes a difference. Thank you for your time love the explorer
@kevinprendkowski3789 consider going down to an 18 setup for a taller sidewall. The lower springs and better struts/Shocks like Bilstein B6 will make the ride firm. You kinda have to pick a side...comfortable or firm.
I need to replace my turbos on ford explorer sport 2017 whatyall recomend
@LuisGonzalez-gz1fn what do you use the Sport for? Do you have any mods?
@ no stock
@LuisGonzalez-gz1fn With no "supporting mods," you might as well just get OEM turbos. Especially if you don't plan on adding anything other mods.
@@blacktalonsport1262 their no other brand than oem that I can put on that r better
Rear roof extension is designed to keep air moving further past car before it starts forming a suction vortex. If the vortex forms away for the car then it has less effect. Idea would to make entire rear in to a long wing shape ten feet or longer. A long tail on a car is not practical. So that roof wing is tricking the air to continue in a laminar flow a bit further past the vehicle to help reduce that suction vortex that forms behind SUV type cars. See 2017 Elantra has drag coefficient of .27 that is super low for a car that uses air for engine cooling, ( gas instead of electric). After market add on will be great. Good points. Can have hood custom lovers added. Maybe have something to add on for long term Highway mpg increase - that removable for city driving. You must be an engineer
@johnjohnson9980 Thanks for your input. I am not an engineer. I look at many things from a design perspective, and I pay attention.
Fun fact: both the 2011 to 2019 explorer steeda adjustable rear sway bar and rear trailing arms do fit the 2013 to 2019 Taurus SHO as a friend of mine ran both on his 2015 sho. Though the adjustable rear toe links WILL NOT fit the taurus as its a completely different design.
Thanks for sharing

Hey, great video. You did a great job explaining what's involved in the lift. Beautiful Explorer, by the way! I've been researching lifting a Ford Flex AWD. It shares the same chassis as the Explorer. So your video is very helpful. One question. After they installed the lift, did they do an alignment? Did they have any trouble getting the alignment in-spec? Thanks!
@richrachner1260 Thank you very much. Yes, an alignment was done. Almost no adjustments needed to be made. Just keep up with tire rotations. Alternate between front to back and criss crossing the tires for even ware. The fronts ware much faster.
How’s it holding up?
Bullet was totaled in 2022, unfortunately
Method MR707 beadgrip 18inch wheels, and 265/60/R18 tires Tire diameter is 30.5 I believe. Does this fit? Would it rub?
With the half inch over 30, that could be a possible rub issue.
How does it shift it normal p around town part throttle driving? Is it still smooth or does it shifter harder when you are just cruising around and not getting on it? Got to make sure the wife is ok with it.
@TheProspectVideo Smooth for the most part. Keep a few things in mind, though 1. 0-20% throttle really smooth shifts 20-50% firm shifts, and anything above 50% the shifts get firmer. 2. I drove in Sport mode mostly because I prefer the car to downshift on deceleration. 3. Hopefully, your wife is inclined to "performance upgrades" because the car will not behave like stock. With the GearHead tune, it will be notably faster and shift harder (firm upshifts and more frequent downshift)
Ok thanks so much for the quick and detailed response!
@TheProspectVideo Anytime
My install is having problems. With it set it the outermost, (softest) hole. I begain to hear a knocking coming from the rear. Pulled off the tires and could see the sway bar links are now hitting the wheels? It seems as if the sway bar has "sprung" out. This happend after about 400 kilometers of driving without a problem. I now have to set it in the middle hole to avoid it hitting the wheels. Anyone else have this issue? FYI, stock wheels, no spacers, 2 inch Traxda lift.
@ALLEAREALESTATE Did you also install the billet spacers that were provided? I can't understand why it would rub anything in any of the settings.
@@blacktalonsport1262 Yes, Installed the spacers that came with it. I noticed that the lift seems to make the rear tires move closer to the front. Maybe this is why it is rubbing? But, if I recall, you had the same Traxda 2 inch lift on Bullet?
@ALLEAREALESTATE Yes, same kit. Has your Explorer ever been hit in the rear or has bent anything? I just don't see why anything would rub/knock unless your Sway Bar links are bad.
@@blacktalonsport1262 No damage to car or links. As I said, it was fine for about 2 months, then started hitting and gradually got worse. Watching your video again, I see you have aftermarket wheels and spacers. So, I`m sure you have more clearance. I simply cannot understand why it was ok initially, now it decides to hit.
@ALLEAREALESTATE sounds like the extra stiffness wore something down...I'd bet on the links.
That thing sounds mean 😂
@@xjayfromva7730 Thanks. It was.
Is this safe to the engine ??
Yes, it's completely safe.

Did you ever replace it ??? The ST are going for fairly cheaper prices now that the newer 25 body styles being updated.
Not yet. I should be getting something shortly. I have a bigger priority to seal first then I can get another car.
Hello nice video! Question i have a 2014 Ford utility Interceptor AWD Ecoboost its oem tires and thendoor jam say its 245/55/18 18x8.0, 114.3 . I dont know much more about tires and what i can use im currently needing a full set and wannanjust buy some nice ones off market place or something just wanna know what i can use thank you
@nicholas3907 Thanks. That size on the door jam is the standard size for the police. As long as you don't put a tire on that is taller than 31", you will be fine. 295's is probably the widest you can go without the tire poking out past the fender.
I'm running a 22x10 et40 with a 285/40 on a 2016 limited. No issues at all
@curtisashworth5965 Nice! As previously mentioned, anything below 31" overall diameter will work. Does it ride rough over bumps?
How did the level 10 trans and converter hold up until the crash? How much HP did you push it too? Ty. Blessings
It held up well. I got about 53k miles out of it. My power was in the 400-465hp range at the time. I was told it could handle up to 700hp.

finally put on the wheels. 20x9.5 -256 50 off road tires... 35 offset. fit great.. white on bronze
were the defoulers enough to kill the CEL or is it tuned out?
It completely got rid of the cel for me. GearHead doesn't tune out codes/cats, unfortunately.
What would you do to increase the tow capacity of the 2017 Explorer Sport? I need to tow 7000 lbs max.
Explorers have a 5k max tow capacity... I wouldn't even attempt that.
I have a 2017 Interceptor 3.5 Twin Turbo and it does have the x-brace in the back. I took it out yo put a 3rd row in cuz I came across a parts vehicle for cheap. That lasted a week it makes a massive difference in handling.
Yeah, I love how one small change to the suspension yields noticeable results for Explorers.
Why did you find the need to lift it (rear)? 265/50R20s Should not hit or rub. I have 31's (285/40R22) w/just a leveling kit and have no rear rubbing issues at all. Barely any on front when doing a U, but yeah, no mods here. I have a 2017 btw.
Simply because I lifted the front. Yes, that's correct. That size is what I went down to...rubbing problem was solved. Anything over 32" will rub.
great video, very informative!! I have a 2012 limited, can I put on 20x10 +39offset with 255/50r20 tires? Thanks man
Yes, it's below 32", so it should work.
Love the video was wondering I got a 2005 hyundai tucsan i was thinking about doing a nonfouler but was wondering if this method works on almost all cars or just some ?
Thanks. It depends. I've had fellow Explorer owners tell me they still get a cel after installing them. One person mentioned he had straight defoulers not ones that had bends (45 and 90) like mine. He wondered if that was why his didn't work. Some cars they work perfectly and others still trip a cel.
I bought and installed it, the light is on but the error message is flashing continuously. How to fix this error?
It's called hyperflash. Get Forscan to correct the error.

Does the 3.5 ecoboost have forged internals from factory
Some, the crank is forged steel, and the rods have a forged powdered metal process. Why do you ask?
Can you help me suggest tunes and exhaust for my 3.5 eco explorer . I am new to this . Thank you

Been a couple years since the last post. Have you had any updates from Traxda on the improved sway bar link bracket, or a specific recommended adjustable sway bar link?
Unfortunately, I haven't had any updates or further contact with Traxda. The last company that I was looking at to get better Sway Bar links from is Whiteline. The way to eliminate the Traxda Sway Bar link bracket is to find a Sway Bar link that can reach and last long. The Steinjager front links I had started to fail (the adjustment sleeve threads started wearing) just before I totaled Bullet.
Has anybody removed the oil filters on the turbo oil supply lines? On my audi those filters cause premature turbo failure. I'm thinking it's the same for the Ford but, haven't heard much.
Explorers don't have inline turbo oil filters
@blacktalonsport1262 I just ordered new factory oil lines and the lines had a small filter/screen inside them, on the turbo side.
@@StephenGBall-rz7kx That's news to me.
Gotcha, yeah I'm not a fan of turbo filters, I think they have a tendency to starve the turbo. Thank for replying and also thanks for the good content in your videos. I havent seen alot of full turbo option breakdowns much like what you put together.
For some of those factory housing sizes upgrades, are the basic supporting mods required? i.e bigger injectors, fuel control special tunes etc? I'm mostly looking for a fun stage 1 style daily that's easy to maintain and reliable. I thought about gutting the cats, but I don't want to deal with engine codes etc.
Different note: has anybody removed the oil filters on the turbo oil supply lines? On my audi those filters cause premature turbo failure, I'm thinking it's the same for the Ford but, I haven't heard much.
Inline turbo oil filters are new turbo tech that's not found on Explorers

If compared stock to steeda where do stock hole match ? I lifted my 22ST 1.5" with HR springs.
The lowest setting is still 110% stiffer than stock. The stiffest setting is around 175% overstock. Those H&R springs for the 6th gen are desirable. Especially if you don't want to install a "lift kit" How do you like the ride of the springs?
@@blacktalonsport1262 springs are pretty good, it's so much taller because it's ST. When I saw it , I was in shock how high it set. I'm not sure how high it was before maybe 33" from ground to fender , now it's 35" to fender. So maybe 1.5" -2" .

Can you tell me if you ever blew a strut mount while using the 275/55/20 tires? This seems like it would give it much more cushion.
I blew a mount every 30-40k miles. The bigger tire didn't help.
I have the 2 inch lift. Thing of keeping it on rear. But, lower the front a bit with the leveling kit instead. Do not how much difference this will make in ride harshness. Or if it will help reduce stress on strut mounts. @@blacktalonsport1262
@@ALLEAREALESTATE if you don't live in a city (like NYC) that has terrible potholes you might not have to do anything. Explorers come with a rake so if you removed the 2" and only did a leveling kit it's possible you might not have the same issue as me...I have seen stock Height Explorers have this same issue though. Explorers have weak front strut mounts. All the miles I used to put on Bullet have accelerated the life of my strut mounts.
I live in the Philippines. Roads here are much worse than NYC. Had to lift the car just to keep it from dragging on the highways here. Less than 20,000 miles and already blowing strut mounts.
